Many Lithuanians are smoking hot. This is not one of them. And it's not fraud. Fraud would be claiming a child she didn't have or a dead relative. Like she say and the author points out it's all legal (and fraud is by definition not legal) what she is doing. This is what happens when you disincentive work and do not put an end date on benefits.

Probably.  £14,500/yr isn't going to buy a lot of designer clothing or vacations.  That's like, what? $20K?

Story is fake or embellished. Yes, you can live in the UK on benefits and not lift a finger and the Sun and Daily Mail will always have stories of one person who gets a luxury house or flat, but the vast majority of people will live in a council flat or mid terrace two bedrooms short of what they should be and they will eat Tesco value chips and the sausages that are only 51% actual meat. Just barely scraping by.
So she is obviously doing a job where she doesnt have to report the income to the government. And a "holiday" can be a mid week, three day trip on a Ryan air flight that costs £30 and hotel or bed and breakfast that costs the same. Eat the same chips and sausage and you have yourself a super cheap holiday. Dont fall for the British derp.

I had cousins before welfare reform who lived on government assistance. Believe me, there is nothing luxurious about living on $600 a month in the 1970s. They barely scraped by, even though three brothers shared expenses. Of course, they didn't have a clue about how to manage money. All they did was eat junk food and stay up all night watching TV and slept all day. None of the three lived to be over 55 years old. Not a life I would wish on anyone. Poor nutrition and sedentary lifestyle plus depending on substandard health care usually sends these folks to an early grave.

Only £1,000/month? That's a drop in the bucket compared to Britain's most notorious welfare queen (emphasis on "queen"),... ;-)

I wonder what questions the reporter really asked, and how she really responded. This could easily be a case where they wanted to talk to people who have been helped by the welfare system - people who would otherwise be hungry or homeless. I sincerely doubt she was so cavalier and flaunting of her life on the dole - she was more likely grateful.

However, by the time the Sun was done with the editing (and embellishing) she comes off like the UK version of a US "welfare queen". The Sun used her to support their agenda of destroying the UK safety net.

The only thing I'd change about their system is a monitoring to ensure that the recipients are either training for new work or going to school or actively seeking work.

There will ALWAYS be those few that take advantage of the system. These few are not reason enough to ruin the whole system for the many who do not abuse it.

Other than that, non-story here.

So the total amount she lives on, including her "side" wages is beneath the poverty level in the UK for a single person, not including a child.. yet the Sun puts up some heavily edited story that makes it sound like this person is living in the lap of luxury on the tax payers dime.

This person is *poor*. The fact that she may be making the best of it without scrounging for scrap in garbage cans isn't exactly an indictment on providing child care benefits to single mothers. The article is so ridiculously slanted that it's a perfectly textbook example of tabloid journalism.. but did you really expect anything different from The Sun?

Andromeda: Sigh...

CSB time, one of my Hungarian cousins moved to the UK where after a few years of working here and there she ended up getting involved with a washed-out British wannabe musician many years older, and they ran a little studio that went under right when the economy tanked.  Around then she got pregnant too, and the kid is now going on 2 years old with no real work seen in that family since.

I asked last time I saw her a few months ago, she said he does DJing on the weekends but that's too tiring for him to find a job during the rest of the week, so they just live off of benefits.  The fact that you can just do this in the UK evidently amazes me.

==================

Most Euro countries are like this. You can keep body and soul together while on the dole....unlike the US. Fact remains that most people want more than just necessities. The vast majority of able bodied people who end up on the dole make an honest effort to get back in the game. Some never do....some are of broken mind/body....some are just grifters. The fact is there will always be small time grifters. It's a small price for society to pay....unlike the big time banker and Wall St grifters we have here in the US.

hasty ambush: New York: Welfare $$ Used at Strip Clubs, Liquor Stores

$69 million in California welfare money spent in Vegas and Disneyland

Not sure about the California situation, but in the NY one a follow up story that wasn't just sensational bullshiat quantified the amount - it was about 1% of the entire benefits paid out for that period of time and it was actually money withdrawn from ATM's, not just spent at those locations - which is actually almost unquantifable because you can (obviously, right?) go to any ATM and withdraw money on your benefits card and then spend it any place as cash.

Honestly, if people are only spending 1% of the benefits money they're given on stuff that people might find "morally reprehensible", then I think we should call that a win. That's a better ratio I bet than faith based GOP lobbyists that cheat on their wives with men.

Exactly, she isn't paying for the nice clothes and vacations with her benefits, she is paying for them by running up credit card debt that she will repay "eventually".

/But I don't know why so many from the US are pissed, that was The American Way from 1997-2007.
//And $20-25,000, in benefits, not even just cash-in-hand, seems like a small price to pay to keep the kid from having to live on the street and watch her mom turn tricks in the back seat, eventually learning that there is no reasosn to try and help society, but instead it exists soley to be preyed upon...or something.

Hardly. I know of people who keep their special needs kids alive just because they get a weekly paycheck from the State. I'm not talking "Little billy has social skill problems" special needs. I'm talking "Little billy is dependant on a trach and g-tube, and his brain turned to mush years ago" kind of special needs.

She can pay all her bills without working a minute, so ANY work she does is straight up pocket money. With 125 pounds a week from her part time, she can save up 2000 pounds a year for vacations even after buying some mid-range brand clothes.
