But $20K that doesn't require any time in the office.

She can pay all her bills without working a minute, so ANY work she does is straight up pocket money. With 125 pounds a week from her part time, she can save up 2000 pounds a year for vacations even after buying some mid-range brand clothes.

Sigh...

CSB time, one of my Hungarian cousins moved to the UK where after a few years of working here and there she ended up getting involved with a washed-out British wannabe musician many years older, and they ran a little studio that went under right when the economy tanked.  Around then she got pregnant too, and the kid is now going on 2 years old with no real work seen in that family since.

I asked last time I saw her a few months ago, she said he does DJing on the weekends but that's too tiring for him to find a job during the rest of the week, so they just live off of benefits.  The fact that you can just do this in the UK evidently amazes me.

The only thing I'd change about their system is a monitoring to ensure that the recipients are either training for new work or going to school or actively seeking work.

There will ALWAYS be those few that take advantage of the system. These few are not reason enough to ruin the whole system for the many who do not abuse it.

Other than that, non-story here.

I wonder what questions the reporter really asked, and how she really responded. This could easily be a case where they wanted to talk to people who have been helped by the welfare system - people who would otherwise be hungry or homeless. I sincerely doubt she was so cavalier and flaunting of her life on the dole - she was more likely grateful.

However, by the time the Sun was done with the editing (and embellishing) she comes off like the UK version of a US "welfare queen". The Sun used her to support their agenda of destroying the UK safety net.

I had cousins before welfare reform who lived on government assistance. Believe me, there is nothing luxurious about living on $600 a month in the 1970s. They barely scraped by, even though three brothers shared expenses. Of course, they didn't have a clue about how to manage money. All they did was eat junk food and stay up all night watching TV and slept all day. None of the three lived to be over 55 years old. Not a life I would wish on anyone. Poor nutrition and sedentary lifestyle plus depending on substandard health care usually sends these folks to an early grave.

I didn't realize it was so cheap to live in the UK. People who make 50k a year must be kings!

2013-01-20 10:12:56 AM
Story is fake or embellished. Yes, you can live in the UK on benefits and not lift a finger and the Sun and Daily Mail will always have stories of one person who gets a luxury house or flat, but the vast majority of people will live in a council flat or mid terrace two bedrooms short of what they should be and they will eat Tesco value chips and the sausages that are only 51% actual meat. Just barely scraping by.
So she is obviously doing a job where she doesnt have to report the income to the government. And a "holiday" can be a mid week, three day trip on a Ryan air flight that costs £30 and hotel or bed and breakfast that costs the same. Eat the same chips and sausage and you have yourself a super cheap holiday. Dont fall for the British derp.

She was in one commercial ten years ago. That hardly makes her an actress. The rest of the profile you linked confirms items in the story--Lithuanian, speaks six languages, etc. The only thing that would make you think this is faked is that in her profile she says she "enjoys working with people."

Exactly, she isn't paying for the nice clothes and vacations with her benefits, she is paying for them by running up credit card debt that she will repay "eventually".

/But I don't know why so many from the US are pissed, that was The American Way from 1997-2007.
//And $20-25,000, in benefits, not even just cash-in-hand, seems like a small price to pay to keep the kid from having to live on the street and watch her mom turn tricks in the back seat, eventually learning that there is no reasosn to try and help society, but instead it exists soley to be preyed upon...or something.

==================

Most Euro countries are like this. You can keep body and soul together while on the dole....unlike the US. Fact remains that most people want more than just necessities. The vast majority of able bodied people who end up on the dole make an honest effort to get back in the game. Some never do....some are of broken mind/body....some are just grifters. The fact is there will always be small time grifters. It's a small price for society to pay....unlike the big time banker and Wall St grifters we have here in the US.

Not saying she's necessarily ugly, but anyone that can't even figure out how makeup works probably wouldn't know "designer" clothes from the tee-shirt bin at Goodwill. She certainly seems to have dressed herself from a Halloween store and her daughter from the Salvation Army.

//No offense to the good folk at the Salvation Army store, which is a fine place that provides a valuable service. I'm just saying the photographic evidence does not really back up the claims the article makes, especially since "foreign" vacationing in Europe takes about as much money and effort as it would take me to 'vacation' in northern Mexico, that is to say an occasional bus ticket and a bit of beer money.

There's a difference between keeping your kid alive for a paycheck when they have no quality of life at all, and being unable to take care of a parent who is quite capable of breathing on their own and has some brain function left. (assuming the story is 100% true as written)

In the UK, her example is little more than tabloid fodder for a handful of readers to become outraged.

In the US, examples like hers cause congress to seriously consider completely eliminating every social net, including the Social Security and Medicare insurance policies that take ~8-15% of each paycheck as a premium, and is the sole means of income and healthcare for many retired and disabled Americans.

In the American political system, one idiot committing fraud really can ruin it for everyone else.

So the total amount she lives on, including her "side" wages is beneath the poverty level in the UK for a single person, not including a child.. yet the Sun puts up some heavily edited story that makes it sound like this person is living in the lap of luxury on the tax payers dime.

This person is *poor*. The fact that she may be making the best of it without scrounging for scrap in garbage cans isn't exactly an indictment on providing child care benefits to single mothers. The article is so ridiculously slanted that it's a perfectly textbook example of tabloid journalism.. but did you really expect anything different from The Sun?

BronyMedic:

There's a difference between keeping your kid alive for a paycheck when they have no quality of life at all, and being unable to take care of a parent who is quite capable of breathing on their own and has some brain function left. I'm neither being sarcastic, nor trying to make a dark joke. There are people that do this.

One's "quality of life" depends in large part on the resources available to provide services needed. A child with terminal degenerative illness has no less right to life than an older patient, it's just that parents/guardians have to make decisions for the kid, without the benefit of previous history in which the patient could have voiced preferences on how vegetative they would have to get before being allowed to starve to death.
Would you err on the side of euthanasia if it were your kid?
And do you really think that there aren't patients with "mush" brains and feeding tubes in nursing homes?
Ugh.
Your claim to know of people who keep their severely disabled kids alive just for money is highly suspect. Jeez. I read the news, and thereby know of people who kill and eat strangers for fun. Doesn't make it a common enough phenomenon to base an opinion of humanity on, or to seriously look for examples of this behavior in my neighbors. Sometimes cynical people see what they want to see, fill in the gaps with stuff from their imagination. Depending on your view of the would, that could be some pretty sick stuff.

It's more like a full time min wage job. That is why our social mobility is so low. Obviously there are other factors such as rising cost of everything, especially tuitions. Couple that with the fact that if you are in this position in the first place your parents probably had trouble navigating the financial system and therefore were less able to point you in positive directions.

Sure as long as they are doing on their own dime and not somebody else's. It is similar to that old saying about your freedom to swing your fist stops at another's face.

It is perfectly reasonable for a country to impose immigration controls with regards to things like welfare benefits. Almost every country with a large social welfare system imposes strict immigration controls Uncontrolled migration to that country by large numbers of people looking to take from the system rather than contribute would destroy it .

It is similar to Fark idiots who say how much they wold like to live in a coutry because of its "free" health care or whatever. Guess what, they don't want you. They want people who can contribute not ones who are looking for "free stuff".. Unless it is the Democrat party in the US looking for future undocumented voters.

lol! can't believe you lot fell for it - it's gvt spin. She's an actress.. she was PAID to say what she said to give people a bad name.
It's called 'looking a bit deeper' than 'oh she's claiming a decent life' - yeah, well, it's not as kosher as you believe. Not when you realise that the Tories have been fiddling the numbers and there's more fraud there than out on the streets.
The upcoming bedroom tax is going to leave a lot of people destitute and solves no housing crisis - there are not the one bed properties needed and nobody can afford to build one bedroom properties...
The 'Universal Credit' being brought in later this year is so utterly confusing and devastating that it's going to financially cripple those who need it most. DLA is becoming PIP and it's going to leave over half a million people who currently get the highest rate of the care component struggling - not least of all needing a carer or a car to get out - all that's going to change - the chances are if you need the mobility component and had a car previously, forget it.
As for the 'medical assessments' - need I say it, but ATOS is a french IT company who have consistently got it wrong with inflexible testing for those with fluctuating conditions.
Appeal against the descision and the DWP/Atos will only say you are fit to work - hence the reason why 32 people a week (now higher) have either commited suicide or have died within weeks of being told they're fit.
Oh - did I mention UNUM?
Unum are in on it too - scandal much? yeah.

The cuts aren't working. The austerity measures aren't working. Taxing the poor isn't working.
Now the weather could be blamed for the upcoming 'triple dip' recession - why? because Gidiot can't count to potato.
Facts are facts people. It's out there.
I predict damage at the local elections in May.

hasty ambush: New York: Welfare $$ Used at Strip Clubs, Liquor Stores

$69 million in California welfare money spent in Vegas and Disneyland

Not sure about the California situation, but in the NY one a follow up story that wasn't just sensational bullshiat quantified the amount - it was about 1% of the entire benefits paid out for that period of time and it was actually money withdrawn from ATM's, not just spent at those locations - which is actually almost unquantifable because you can (obviously, right?) go to any ATM and withdraw money on your benefits card and then spend it any place as cash.

Honestly, if people are only spending 1% of the benefits money they're given on stuff that people might find "morally reprehensible", then I think we should call that a win. That's a better ratio I bet than faith based GOP lobbyists that cheat on their wives with men.

On the flip side, there are plenty of people on welfare who would LIKE to work. I was once one of them. I can appreciate the welfare system, but I get irked when I hear of people milking it like this. That's not what it's meant for. In Maine, welfare is known as "TANF." The "t" is for "temporary."

If I had my druthers, I'd re-direct social moneys towards education and programs that assist people to get off of welfare. I, however, suspect that this would cost MORE than just giving people a grand or so every month. :/

If I had my druthers, I'd re-direct social moneys towards education and programs that assist people to get off of welfare. I, however, suspect that this would cost MORE than just giving people a grand or so every month. :/

If I had my druthers I would re-direct moneys toward the invention of magic pills that will boost the IQ of the underclass.

Feed on the hate. Let it consume you.

It's exactly what Murdoch intended with his little lie. You're being played.

Oh, uh me too. Been on welfare since 2 years before I was born. I live in a huge mansion with an elevator for my many cars. Tax payer money has been good to me. Not sure why more people don't do this.

cig-mkr: 14,500 pounds equates to about $23,001.35 in US dollars.
Nope, not enough to live on....Better then Walmart pay, but still not enough.

That's 23K with no rent, free child care, free utilities, and coupons for part of her groceries. Part time work of you can call 16 hours/week work. It would make you laugh if the US weren't heading for the same situation. Yeah, Republicans buy votes wholesale, at least some people get to work for what doesn't get raked off the top. Democrats buy their votes retail and cut out the middle man. Just handing out free stuff in return for votes from people the politicians are terrified of. Once they have bought a solid 51% there is no going back even if they run out of other people's money. No politician can manage the economy for anyone's benefit but his own.

$15,000... isn't that what a part time Starbucks barista makes?

LOLWUT??! Why is there a picture of a harried family of six that I'm supposed to apparently feel sorry for how hard life is on them... making $650k per year.

You are supposed to feel sorry for them because the amount more they will pay this year is as much as the woman in this article gets so she can live the high life with her crotchfruit.  And that could be you some day.

KwameKilstrawberry: hasty ambush: New York: Welfare $$ Used at Strip Clubs, Liquor Stores

$69 million in California welfare money spent in Vegas and Disneyland

So farking what? At least it goes back into the American economy. Also, you do realize that in many urban areas, the only grocery stores in town are liquor stores?

Under that theory, with all that money" going back into the economy", areas with a high percentage of the population on welfare should be economic boom towns-you know like Detroit. If the liberal theory about Food Stamps contributing so much to the economy were true those neighborhoods with a lot people on food stamps would be thriving economic centers.

Your liquor store defense does not hold water when it turns out California welfare recipients are making trips to Vegas but somehow cannot make it to a real grocery store.

there is surprisingly little work which rewards you just for blabbing your mouth... at least, which would reward you above and beyond what you could get for blabbing in just one language... it is an advantage though... for people who are inclined to capitalize on advantages, which she clearly is not...

I don't understand this. Saint Krugman and 90% of fark tell me that Britain is an example of the failure of austerity.

I looked at the number cited in California's study - they say 10.8 billion went into these welfare payments, and 69 million got misused. Or to make it less vague.

1080 million in, 69 million misused. Or about a 6% misuse rate. Yeah, it's a problem, but I wouldn't exactly say "DOOM OF THE SYSTEM".
