She's so upset about this she's willing to inflict pain on a random guy from the internet.

What a brave woman, nay, heroine!

The act of almost unthinkable violence in a public place will no doubt cause horror and revulsion among be largely ignored by passers-by.

From the pic, she's shattering the myth that vegans are underfed. She must mainline avocados and macadamias.

If she was a religious fundie pulling a stunt like this, the Reality-Based Community would have its collective panties in a bunch.

Big deal. People get branded every day. They just don't do it in public. Apparently it doesn't even hurt much. At first.

I'm not in favour of animal cruelty, and I think most of us eat waaay too much meat than we need to. However, this woman is nuts.

Human beings are obligate omnivores. Our teeth, stomach, intestines, etc. have evolved to process all sorts of foods. We need a balance of meat, veggies, fruits, etc. to live a normal healthy life.

With 7 billion people to feed, some "factory" farming is a cruel necessity to keep our people alive and healthy.

Vegans ARE religious fundies, make no mistake. Just slightly different religion.

This. People get branded voluntarily all the time. She should brand someone by surprise. That'd work better.

/Then she'll get the psychological help she deserves

Personally I hope the silly twit gets major infections, needs skin grafts and tries to sue the government for not stopping him. Then everyone can mock the loony leading him to either a, grow up or b, hang himself and remove a further burden from the state. Personally, although Brits get socialised medicine, I think there should be exceptions for adults self-inflicting wounds. Like getting handed a bottle of H2O2 and told "Man up, Nancy" when he complains about the pain.

If she did it to me, she'd need the services of a good dentist and proctologist first. The former to fix her jaw, the latter to extract the brand from where I'd stick it.

An omnivore Truther. How droll.

The woman is not nuts, but what she plans to do is counterproductive. Protesting acts crueler than others reinforces the idea that some animal use can be sanctioned because it isn't quite as terrible.

To be fair to the idea itself, genetic engineering of plants and the manufacture of vitamins and other complex molecules industrially to the point of negating the need for ranching entirely is _probably_ possible scientifically and industrially at this point (give or take a decade of focused research) without killing off too many humans.

It would, of course, kill all the cows and chickens and a lot of field animals, since we'd no longer have a motivation to artificially maintain food animal populations and would need to kill off a bunch of animals for the expanded farm-land need that could have co-existed with the stock when it was ranch-land. Plus, the idiots that oppose eating meet tend to also oppose GM foods, on account of they're idiots.

Oh, and IIRC adults cannot consent to grievous bodily harm in the UK, so better be really careful how deep that branding goes and make sure it doesn't get infected.

Since that means "can't live without meat and plants" (I assume - I only know the phrase obligate carnivore) I'm going to go with no, and cite the woman in the example as evidence. Okay, that's maybe not a good idea because then you can argue that it causes brain damage. Alright, my fiancee, then. Hmm... she's marrying me, so there's the same problem. Well, maybe you're onto something here.

Most vegans eat that way because they find it a nice way to live and couldn't give a flying fark what shiat you choose to shove down your throat. But if you need to belittle them to make yourself feel better, by all means, make yourself feel better by blanket stereotypes.

A healthy vegan diet generally includes supplements made from "magic pixie dust that is in no way derived from any animal sources whatsoever even if the bottle says otherwise so please give it back before you decide to google the name and prove that it comes from meat".

Or it consists of reading every damn label in the grocery store so you can avoid the random stuff that has whey powder in it. Seriously, why do they put that in everything? Or gelatin. Frosted cereals aren't vegan, and I love my off brand frosted mini wheats.

[citation needed]

And one easy enough to deliver on. Well not the assertion that "a healthy vegan diet generally includes supplements" because good luck on backing up that one. Go find a vegan supplement and show that it is really sourced from animals. Makes total sense, right? The animals get their nutrition from plants and bacteria in the first place, so humans couldn't possibly do the same. Yup, totally follows.

Raise awareness != Change.

I'm not in favor of factory farming, but these shock protesters only hurt their cause, since everyone now associates "don't torture animals" with "let's assault random people who might be supporting the fur industry".

No, he's right. Just the other week, someone told me that they were planning to start allowing Jews to join my country club. If that isn't wrong, I don't know what is. I expect everyone will support me in stopping this, and I'll whine like a little histrionic baby if their opinions differ from mine.

I don't recall the name, but I pointed out to a (former) friend that the supplement that she was taking at lunch had fish oil and egg white.

Suffice to say, reading that label is one of the reasons I no longer consider her a friend.

Omnivores can generally remain healthy with a balanced diet alone. Vegans, on the other hand, have to take factory-produced supplements, or overload on one specific type of food that contains whatever vitamin they're lacking.

To me, that doesn't exactly scream "healthy".
