Jaws_Victim: KangTheMad: RandomRandom: fusillade762: Apparently they can cause serious injury if fired at close range.

FATAL if fired at the head at point blank range.

Had he guy fired, the assassination would probably have succeeded.

He did, you could hear the click of the trigger being pulled if you up the volume, plus if you watch closely, you can see the pistol barrel jerk to the assassin's right as he yanks on the trigger. It was a misfire however.

//not a camera shutter, it was a single click
///what really got me was the old man and his umbrella

Horrifying, isn't this something that only happens in Hitchcock movies? Why on earth would you go on television and kill someone in plain view of everyone in your country? I guess he didn't intend on getting away.

Fame, notoriety, martyrdom, ethnic hate. Most likely the last two.

Not being a farmers market the old man had to use his umbrella.

Waiting for the Bud Dwyer suicide video. Probably scrubbed from the net now. Saw it live with no editing. Amazing and interesting from a medical standpoint.

Heard the click, misfire = one very lucky politician. Looks like the guy knew it too and went to try for a manual rechamber before going for something in his jacket. Good thing he got mugged by security before he got whatever it was.

He had two knives

The vigilante mob was only slightly less disturbing than the assassination attempt.

syrynxx: One other article on the event said it was a "gas pistol" - like perhaps it shot tear gas pellets, not actual bullets?

CO2 powered, more likely. You know it as an air gun or pellet gun.

/available at most wal-marts and sporting goods stores in the US for less than $50

I don't know many Bulgarians but every Bulgarian in that video looks exactly what I think a Bulgarian looks like. Bulgarian.

Then that's a lucky politician twice over. It doesn't take much knife work to make someone unfixable.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist at all. But, the whole thing doesn't look or sound right at all. Disarmed by his target after stalking right up on him? Within arm's reach? Where was his security? Why did they let him get that close to the man?

How did a man intending to kill another on live tv manage to let an elderly politician with no remarkable physical prowess disarm him?

And then have the target and all his friends beat him up on live tv?

This feels very out of the norm.

2013-01-19 10:23:52 PM
The old man and his umbrella was priceless. You have to figure it took him that long to amble up from the back of the hall to get his swat in at the would-be assassin's head.

What is genuinely scary about this is that the assassin has a press pass.

2013-01-19 10:24:43 PM

Infernalist: Whatever this was, it's not as simple as an assassination attempt. Assassins don't run up on stage with a short range pistol, and they certainly don't get disarmed by an old politician.

Never heard of Rosalino "Chalino" Sánchez, Dimebag Darrell, or Theodore Roosevelt?

Gun laws in Bulgaria are actually quite strict.

/it may have been a gas gun
//small possibility this was a political stunt

yeh,, if you turn up the volume you can hear a faint click of a misfire right when the guy first leaps on stage and gets the gun close to his target.

There was no hesitation whatsoever on the part of the assailant. It was essentially flawless execution, except for equipment failure.

The only thing that saved that politician was the misfire.

KimNorth: Why does this feel set up? What kind of stunt was this and why?? WHY????

Because an assassination attempt makes controversy and surviving makes you look cool.

Also, when a man has a gun, he can be a lot farther away. Coming up that close and pausing to let "victim" get his shiat together is the wrong way to assassinate someone with a pistol. He could have put a few rounds into the old man from 10' away instead of standing there waiting.

Except when, as has been explained many times already, the gun in question is a blank gun (an Ekol Volga, made in Turkey) and thus must be fired from very close range in order to be effective as a weapon instead of as just a noisemaker. You hear the click- either the gun misfired, or the idiot forgot to chamber a round first. If that had been successful, that politician would be dead or seriously injured.

Almost as though the whole point was to make the politician look like an innocent man being targeted for assassination, and get a good photo op in the process.

Gun laws make people stupid? My gosh No gun! How can I kill him as I only have these two very sharp knives in my pocket? What did we do before guns? It must have been great no war or murder.....

Or he's a cat's paw, possibly in the employ of the man he was there to "assassinate" or his party.

You don't always have to give henchmen the full scoop, and you can equip them with bogus gear to make sure they can't botch your operations.

He could even have been just sending a message. Kind of like the horse head in the Godfather. "Our guys can reach you. Next time, the gun's loaded. You're not safe." kind of thing,

There's so many chances for it to be something that ISN'T a lone man attempting the assassination of a politician. It could be that, too, but who uses a blank gun when they've got two knives on them?

The would be assassin was Turkish, I've pretty much no reason to doubt it wasn't a legit attempt.

Hey, if you attempt to assassinate someone then you deserve to get your butt kicked. My only question is why he was still conscious when they walked him off in hand-cuffs; pretty feeble vigilante mob. But when your vigilante leader appears to be an 80 year old with an umbrella, this is what you get.

Why is it when it isn't the US, Brits or zee Germans, everyone else's elite protection/ security looks like something out of a Keystone Cops meet the Stooges?

If by vigilante you mean people who were trying to keep from getting shot themselves.

Sounds like assassination attempts in Bulgaria are like being thrown out of a bar in other countries.

Did you not see security keeping them from killing him?

You really have to do that or you can't torture, I mean interrogate his employers' names out of him later.

Yeah, IF it was a setup, the assassin wasn't in on it. He, at least, thought it was real. Because no way a fake assassin would let himself get beat up by a bunch of old men. I've also heard that Bulgarian security still has leftovers from the Soviet days in the back room, so unless THEY'RE in on the scheme, that guy is in for a bad night. He may be wishing he was back in Incirlik being abused by Turkish guards.

Small pistol, small sight radius. He wouldn't have had time to line-up a shot before being tackled.

exactly.

And in fact when it doesn't go off the assailant steps back to try to unjam the weapon, and then he's mobbed as is target stumbles away
