Treadstone trained Dogan quite well.

One other article on the event said it was a "gas pistol" - like perhaps it shot tear gas pellets, not actual bullets?

And that old geezer just had to get one last indignant kick in. Such courage deserves a medal!

The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a bunch of good guys with heavy shoes.

I thought this was in the USA. I mean, they had him subdued but still continued to beat him...

/sarcasm off

2013-01-19 09:28:15 PM
At least they laid the boots into him. Look, if you can also smuggle two knives into the venue along with your small "gas pistol" you should make proper arrangements and use a real pistol.

/checks Bulgarian gun laws

Looks like Canada's. Perhaps he had no other weapon, it's possible. Yay for gun laws.

If everyone in the auditorium had a firearm they could have subdued the criminal.

Thanks, libs!

What puzzles me is that there is no one in Belguim worth an assassination.

Prisoner One: "Hey, what YOU in here for?"
Prisoner Two, boastfully: "I'm an assassin!"
Prisoner One: "From where?"
P2: "Belgium."
P1: "Where's that?"
P2: "Europe!"
P1. "Oh, well who did you kill?
P2 "&*%$!"
P1: "Never heard of him."

It looked very poorly staged like a PR stunt to me... right up until a bunch of guys laid into the gunman with a bunch of very real, harmful kicks and punches. But maybe they weren't in on the act.

I dunno, there's a definite *click* right at the point where he should have pulled the trigger, and he immediately tries to re-chamber. I'm betting misfire or forgot to chamber a round. Could have been a very different video otherwise.

I knew a Bulgarian guy, his teeth were rotting out of his head and you could smell his breath from 30 feet away. Don't know how but he brought a smoking little wife over here with him. She must have been trying to escape their would be assasins.

Gas guns are fatal at point blank range. Had the gun fired, he probably would have killed his target.

In other gun news, just 5 accidental shootings today at events celebrating "Gun Appreciation Day".

Gun used in the attack.

If you want to kill a public servant, I recommend you buy American.

From wiki:

A gas pistol is a non-lethal weapon used for self-defense and other purposes. It is typically a close-to-exact replica or conversion of a real handgun made to be able to fire tear gas cartridges only. Effective range is up to 4.5 metres depending on caliber.

Apparently they can cause serious injury if fired at close range.

FATAL if fired at the head at point blank range.

Total fail on keeping the guy subdued. Security needs better training.

The man was identified as Oktay Enimemehmedov, a 25-year-old ethnic Turkish resident of the city of Burgas, with a previous criminal record for assault and theft.

Well that explains it.

It appears that the politician at least tried to grab the weapon arm (did he?) and then did a judo roll away!

Am I the only one amazed by this?

He did, you could hear the click of the trigger being pulled if you up the volume, plus if you watch closely, you can see the pistol barrel jerk to the assassin's right as he yanks on the trigger. It was a misfire however.

//not a camera shutter, it was a single click

has everybody covered this looking like a misfire?

Who the hell wants to kill the Prime Minister of Malaria anyways? It's a pretty rad place. I really miss Sofia and my early 20s...

2013-01-19 10:02:27 PM
Clearly even if we ban the guns, the criminals are just going to use gas guns, so SAMs and Nukes for everyone!

2013-01-19 10:02:30 PM
The guy looks amazingly shocked when nothing happens after he comes to a stop in front of his target. In fact, he either deliberately hesitates, or the gun doesn't fire.

Perhaps he forgot to take the safety off.

Or maybe the gun misfired and didn't shoot.

Or maybe whoever got him the gun got him a bad gun.

Whatever this was, it's not as simple as an assassination attempt. Assassins don't run up on stage with a short range pistol, and they certainly don't get disarmed by an old politician.

Horrifying, isn't this something that only happens in Hitchcock movies? Why on earth would you go on television and kill someone in plain view of everyone in your country? I guess he didn't intend on getting away.
