A palm tree is not a tree, but a form of grass.

If you draw the evolutionary tree woody plants are mixed in with limp-stemmed species. Rose bushes and cherry trees are in the same family. The tiny flower called bunchberry is a dwarf dogwood.

Okay, but is the evolutionary tree a tree, or is it also just really tall grass?

Sometimes it's grass, but biologists say "polytomy" because that sounds more scientific.

Sometime in the last year here, there was a thread about pink - or more accurately, magenta. It's really just a lack of green light, which many of us know from screwing around with Photoshop or other graphics programs, or being physics geeks. Also, I've had a few headlines pinklighted.

As an artist, I've found that if I want something to be a light red, it's best to use orange. Pink clashes with reds.

Red is weird like that. Doesn't get lighter when you add white, instead you get a whole different color.

Sure it's related to grass, but it's not a grass. That's the family Poaceae. Palm are as related to grasses as orchids. All of these fall into the category of Monocots, which are distinguished from the other major group of flowering plants (Dicots) by the number of seed leaves (cotyledons) when they sprout.

And since there are more species of orchids than grass, it's probably better to say that a palm tree is just a version of a vanilla orchid. Of course, in terms of biomass, I think the grasses win, so there's that.

I'm about 80% sure, this isn't a bunch of bs - someone can check my facts on wikipedia.

Hydrogen bonds are most certainly bonds. Hint: just because covalent bonds exist doesn't mean that ionic bonds don't.

Covalent bonds (think carbon-carbon) are a quantum mechanical thing. If you're an organic chemist that's what you typically think of. But salt (NaCl) is held together primarily by ionic forces- the attraction between Na+ and Cl- ions. Hydrogen bonds are just a special type of ionic bond formed when you have a highly electronegative atom bonded to a hydrogen that's less so- think O-H in water. The O strips significant electron density off the H, and then you can have the ionic interactions between the positively charged H and the negatively charged O on other molecules.

Similarly, the various forms of Van der Waals bonds are quite real, albeit a lot weaker

/H bonds are kind of important- water wouldn't be a liquid at room temperature without them, and protein structures are highly dependent on them

It's not. Or rather, it chooses one version of what someone means when they say "black". If you say "pitch black" you mean very dark - no light - and that's exactly what is being described. If you interpret it as meaning a color, then it's a hard thing to talk about, since a black hole can't be seen, like asking if the invisible man is pale or dark.

The "pink is not a color" one got me. The man narrating claimed that pink and magenta were the same color. That was enough to tell me he didn't know what the hell he was talking about.

www.geekinheels.com

Though to be fair, I do hear guys refer to magenta as "purple" or "pink" fairly often. I'm pretty sure something about that Y-chromosome interferes with the full development of color vision.

but the invisible man allows light behind him to pass through - a black hole is like a perfectly black circle of paper. It reflects no light, therefore appears black. In the black hole's case, it's perimeter is determined by the strength of its gravitational pull... I think

I think they poorly stated a situation which has happened recently where the value of the metal in a penny and a nickel exceeded $.01 and $.05 respectively
