I would ask to see the speed study that set the limit. If that many people are going over, it probably needs to be reevaluated.

I highway I drive quite often has a 55 mph speed limit and has mailboxes on it. They are about 3 miles apart from each other, but they are still residential mailboxes

Vermont is a great example where this applies..  Many tourists, out of staters will be on a 50mph Vermont road that for a mile or maybe two goes down to 25-30 mph because it goes through a small town. Most dummies and out of state tourists blast through at 40 mph thinking "It's just some dumb small town in the sticks of Vermont no one will notice"..  Cops in those small towns usually have a zero tolerance policy for blasting through.

Looking at it on Google Maps, it seems like a fairly tight residential street. People SHOULD be going a block north to Fairview if they want to go between 395 and the 580 freeway. Colorado is 3 lanes with parking alongside and houses right on the road, while Fairview is five lanes with no street parking and no houses. Sure, the driving lanes are fairly wide... but you're dodging people getting into their cars. Most of the houses look to have less than a car-length between the their walls and the road. I'd guess people are using it as a shortcut between Lincoln Hey and the Carson City Fwy.

I've never once got a speeding ticket I deserved, because every time I was driving in a situation I felt warranted by road conditions and traffic. The cop disagreed with me. Who was right? *ME*, because I'm the one actually driving in the conditions, the one whose life is actually on the line from them and who has to constantly evaluate my surroundings from that perspective. Yes, I acknowledge that most people on the road are not paying attention and driving faster than they can handle. I'm not one of them.

I agree with most of that. Is what I don't agree with is officers hanging out looking for traffic infractions. Like people California stopping through a 4 way stop. Or taking advantage of confusing or inadequate signage. It's not about $afety, it's about revenue.

I would also like to point out that every cop I have ever known has been especially intolerant of things like late fees, parking tickets, restrictive return policies and other people doing their jobs when it is inconvenient for the officer.

If you're driving substantially faster or slower than traffic around you, you are a hazard on the road and you deserved that ticket. I once got a ticket in Texas for driving too slow. I was doing 65 in a 55. 65 was all the moving van I was driving would do. But everyone around me was going 75 or better.

Oh and here in Oklahoma, ticket quotas are illegal. If you accuse my cop brother of trying to fill a quota, he'll tell you that they don't have a quota and that he is allowed to write as many citations as he wants.

Damn, why could I never get pulled over by someone like you. It seems 90% of cops are dicks before the driver gets a word in edge wise. For instance:

I'm 18, get back to my work after a dinner with co-workers and my boss. It's dark, it's late (about 9 or 10 pm). I'm the last one to leave and instantly after getting out of the parking lot I have a cop on me. I notice this and make sure I don't do a damn thing to get him to pull me over. Full stop at stop signs, signaling, checking my blind spots, the works. Low and behold they pull me over anyway. Give me the normal "license and registration" speech, asking if I have anything in my car. Also asking why was leaving that parking lot, I tell them why and even show them my business card. All the while I'm 100% calm and polite, no talking back, no smart mouthing, nothing. They notice I have hand-rolled cigars in my glovebox (given to me by my mothers boyfriend at the time). Ofcoarse they're suspicious, and they ask, I explain to them they're just cigars from my mothers boyfriend.

They go back to their car for a few minutes, running my license and reg. Come back and ask if they can search my car. Me, being the dumbass kid who didn't want to cause any trouble, quickly said they could.

Fast forward a minute or two, while I'm standing outside my car waiting for the cops to start search it, and I ask "May I ask why you pulled me over?", I instantly get a response of "Don't be a smart ass." (To be fair, I did have my arms crossed and a inquisitive look which they may have taken as somewhat smart-assish? Still completely uncalled for). I tell them I'm not trying to be a smart ass when they get a call on their radio. A liquor store had just been robbed just a few blocks from my work. They tell me "You're lucky we have to go", and get back into their car and drive off. Since I never got an answer to my question, I've assumed to this day it was because "reports of suspicious activity in area", "young person", "leaving the back parking lot of an electronics store hours after it had closed."


TLDR:
Cops pull me over, I ask for reason they think I'm trying to be a smart ass. While they're harrassing me, the person they were looking for (I assume) robs a liquor store nearby. Karma.

If you are unfortunate and get a ticket, fight it. You might get off (usually, if it comes to a court trial and the cop doesn't show up, it's a dismissal.) In most cases, you get a chance to argue your case without even having to go to court! Just send in your fine money with a written "Not Guilty" plea. The court will then send you a form to submit your side of the story on. The cop has to submit his case as well, and a judge makes a decision. If they find you guilty at that point, you still have an ace in the hole, if you wish to use it -- your day in court, facing the shill who wrote the ticket in front of a judge! I went to court for my last one and got off (cop was sick.) However, even in the case of people who sat across from their accusers and were found guilty, the judge extended them reduced fines and/or traffic school for offenses that were normally too "serious" to allow for it (e.g. speeding over 90 on the I-5 Grapevine). So, taking some time off for court can save you big bucks when you factor in insurance hikes and other costs beyond just the amount of the fine.

Even if the citation is upheld, you've caused the officer to do a few hours of desk work that he wouldn't have to do if you just plead guilty and pay the fine. Make the bastards work for your hard earned cash!! I'll bet that, if every ticket was fought and that joker faced 1,400 court trials (or even 1,400 responses to written declarations) he wouldn't be so eager to cite!

/My best advise? Don't speed, i don't care if you don't "like" the speed limit or agree with it. You got a beef with the posted limit? Take it up with the mayor or state officials, the police have 0 to do with posted limits. Those are imposed by the state and city, and the engineers who look at the road. It's the posted limit. I as an officer don't have any say at all about them. i give you 10 miles over the limit, even in a residential area, and then you're getting pulled over. I'll be nice, and polite, and respectful, but if you start ranting and giving me a hard time for something YOU did, you can't expect me to walk back to my car with my tail between my legs just because YOU'RE upset that you got caught breaking the law. Just because you don't agree with it, that has nothing to do with me doing my job, part of which is enforcing the speed limits for public safety. You want the law changed? Fine, talk to the DMV or your alderman. Giving the officer a bunch of shiat because you can't follow the rules is bullshiat. If you can't stay within 10 miles an hour of the speed limit, you have no business driving. Esp in a residential area. Quit being a dick, slow down, but if you do get busted, just take your ticket or fight it in court. That is your right. But don't hate on the officer because he caught you.

Both times I've gotten tickets were in clear dry conditions with no cars within 50 yards of me (except the cop in his hiding place). I was traveling at a safe speed for the road and the conditions... unfortunately the posted speed is about 30 mph less than the max safe speed (I was only going 15 over).

If it wasn't about the revenue, they'd just give points, not fines. Too many points, you lose some driving rights (just like a DUI). If you keep accumulating points, you lose your license entirely.

The majority of their time is spent giving out tickets for minute traffic violations, very rarely do they actually capture a bad guy. And if they do, it is almost always after the crime is done so they didn't prevent anything.

Hold on a second... how is a police officer supposed to arrest someone if no crime occurred? How do you propose they "catch bad guys" when no law has been broken at that time?
