whyaduck: We have the dentist come out once a year for our 14 horses (only 7 are actually ours, the rest borders).

There are two types of equine dentist: old-school types who use hand tools (rasps, files, etc) and actual skill to do the job and modern types (frequently vets) who sedate and use power tools. Give me old school any day. Besides being a lot cheaper, the horses actually love it.

I grew up in a small suburban town in NJ where, in the mid-1970s, residential lots were typically anything from 1/4 to 2/3 of an acre, often wooded. (They've gotten bigger since, as the demographics of the town have grown wealthier and also in keeping with the McMansion fad.) Well, as it turned out, in the mid 1970s, a whole bunch of girls just a little bit older than I was must have read Misty of Chincoteague and gone through the Horse Phase at the same time because it became a fad to keep a horse on such small suburban lots. My parents joked a lot at the time about people turning the garage into a horse stall. (Which, as far as we know, never happened.)

We had one neighbor who had a horse. Their lot was similarly sized to ours, at about a third of an acre, most of it wooded. You could tell that horse was unhappy for lack of proper running room. Anyway, it got loose one weekend while all the humans who lived in the house were away and it was roaming the neighborhood. My dad phoned it in to the town cops out of concern that the animal would get hurt, would get hit by a car, etc. The cops treated him like someone who was seeing pink elephants. O.o

I guess they'd received a few such calls, or had problems with horses being neglected or abused, because after a while the town passed an ordinance specifying a minimum lot size for keeping large animals.
