There are only a few in Denver and the one I went to folded and became a Starbucks. Lamar's is better anyway.

Pretty much this. All the stores they opened in the NE flourished from the novelty for a small time, then got whomped when people discovered they wanted an actual donut and not the equivalent of eating a (granted a very nice and tasty) sugary cloud. Then there was DD's coffee, which fuels most if not all New Englanders.

KK is great, don't get me wrong. It was sufficiently different that the donuts never caught on.

KK has no chance here in Chicagoland. Every one we had here that I know of closed. Too sweet and not much variety.

The Columbia KK is literally right around the corner from the house, so on Saturday and Sunday mornings, we're there - but DDs has better donuts (not quite as teeth-itchingly sweet) and a better selection, so once a month or so I make the fifteen-mile round trip to the only DD in town.

You're right. They were here in the Boston area then gone so quickly it was like a flash of lightning. I never got to see what people rave about.

That was my thought exactly. They were popular when they first opened, but I think the novelty wore off. Our local mom n pop shop makes better donuts, and we rarely get donuts anyway. Unhealthy little monsters.

Kentucky Fried Chicken. Very successful in the mid-east and Japan.

Yep. Same thing happened here in Connecticut. Krispy Kreme tried expanding into the Northeast during the Atkins Diet craze...I don't think it lasted a year. There is a happy ending though, since the building now houses a DiBella's sub shop.

Your average pant size-as long as it's not on the extreme ends of the spectrum--has very little to do with whether or not you are obese.

Now the amount of KK donuts you consume? That has a direct correlation. I would posit that anyone who visits KK an average of more than once a month sees a statistically significant increase in the likelihood of being classified as obese. Someone test this for me pls.

The local KK closed within about a year of opening. The building now houses a dental office.

It's been my experience that they're still pretty damned good for at least 8 hours after they come out of the oven. Dunkin does have the advantage in longevity though.

You're correct - if they are only good hot out of the fat, you have a problem.

I could well be mis-remembering this didn't KK become popular because Bill Clinton or somebody on his staff loved them? It was faddish, kind of like Jelly Belly jelly beans when Reagan was in office. If I am not again mistaken, hasn't their popularity been more or less waning ever since?

Since they're a business and having more stores would offer more jobs, I wish them well. But I probably won't rush out to buy their stock. I know they've recovered from their 09 lows, as have most companies, but they're nowhere near their 10 and 20 year highs.

When they get cold, put a KK donut into a microwave for 10 seconds. no more. Softens them right up and makes them warm like right off the line.

Slightly OT: Who here has seen the episode of 'Duck Dynasty' where they have a contest over who can eat the most warm donuts and rail thin Si puts away 29?

Man I've never understood the fascination with donuts. When Krispy kreme was new to the scene, or at least for us, my buddy drove my happy ass all the way to Portland from the coast on account of me never had one.

Was it good? Yes. Was it better than other things. No. Bunch of sugar and starch, I'm not a child. I'll stick to Umami and Salt for my palatable tactlessness.

As for dunken donuts, those had always widely been regarded as shatholes from when I was growing up. Guess people will put up with anything to be able to claim X is better than Y.

Krispy Kreme is god awful. It's like sugar on sugar, no finesse.

Although, I don't really care for them. Evey one I've tried was damp and overly sweet. Of course I like old-fashioned and cinnamon-sugar, so I am perhaps not the target market.

And I don't want a liquid donut.
