FTFA: Prince likened the concerts to public workouts once held by another legend: "Muhammad Ali trained in public gyms that were open to the press; he was a prime inspiration."

Does anyone do that anymore, or are the insurance liabilities from stalkers, paparazzi and scam artists looking for a payday/notoriety too pricey?

I guess people must do it, but not for the reason Ali did it?

How does one tell the difference between a celebrity who wants the attention, and someone who prefers to be left alone but is tolerating non-celebrities bothering them throughout their dinner/trip/workout/whatever?

Yes, because when I think of rock, I think of Prince.

Great article. It would be great to hang with just about any musician in this fashion. Ironically, when success arrives, it narrows fan expectations and they then demand new music to recreate the same experience of the old. Tall order.

THIS.

While many of Princes biggest air play songs are mostly pop, he's a very accomplished guitarist and know how shred.

He used to do this once in a while. He'd show up under a different name or unannounced at bars in Cincinnati. Probably not the only place....

He is the best.

Saw Carlos Santana at HOB in New Orleans play for about 400 people. Saw the Stones play in New York with around 500 people. They told me I had a good time at both shows.

Big acts in small venues are fun. I have seen performances by The Who in a 200 seat space, Chris Rock in a room with less than 100, Jerry Seinfeld in my office and PHISH in a small walk in closet as one of five spectators.

I've never been a big Prince fan, even in the 80s. Many years ago, a friend of mine was obsessed with Prince. I agreed to come along to Paisley Park and watch one of his shows.

I have to say, whatever you think of that man's music, he is unbelievably talented.

In one set, the bassist wasn't keeping up. After yelling in his ear a couple times, he motioned for the guy to leave the stage. He proceeded to take the bass and play the rest of the song without missing a beat, while singing.

Prince, while an icon and great performer will now always bring up thoughts of suing YouTube videos for daring to have his song playing in the background while filming your kid. Still, he is talented and is probably the last black rock star.

Also if these tickets were so exclusive how did one guy get to go to two shows? Seems they would have had one show per person for the week.....

Closest to this for me was Sonic Youth doing the same thing. (I think they do this a lot.) Black Rebel Motorcycle Club opened for Stone Temple Pilots (ick) a few years back; hung around and played a small-club gig the next night.

/Prince rules.

2013-01-19 11:24:14 AM
Article's headline is a bit misleading... kind of hard to be a "surprise show" if there are 6 of them, and they instituted anti-scalping measures when tickets went on sale.

I was there Thursday, and I don't think I've ever smiled so much at a rock show. The whole thing was fantastic. The only thing I'm a little sad about is that Prince didn't break out the guitar like I guess he did on Friday. Got the show started with: "Soundcheck is over. You're in my house now." The highlight for me was a rendition of Satisfied delivered in a creaky, breathy voice that just oozed desire. Pretty sure that after that he could have had any lady in the room. These shows were billed as live rehearsals to shake off the cobwebs and tighten up the band, because apparently the man is a perfectionist of a different order.

Really hope there are some Paisley Park gigs this spring.

It was never intentional, but I always enjoyed integrated groups. The Allman Brothers, Sly & The Family Stone, The Doobie Brothers, POD, and more recently, Tedeschi-Trucks. I'm sure there are others. Not only does it present a good image, but it makes great music.

Granted, the man looks to still be in good shape, though I don't think he's been working the assless pants like he was back in the day.

And, if we're going to compare abilities....

I've seen him twice - once during the Purple Rain tour - it was non-stop energy - Sheila E was the opening act and when he came out to start with Lets Go Crazy, all these artificial flowers came falling out of the ceiling of the Spectrum (I still have one in my scrapbook). The other time was at the Electric Factory in Philly - THAT was a very cool and intimate show. His live shows are amazing, there are only a few other performers that I've seen that rock their hearts out like he does, you totally get your money's worth. Good on him that he's still doing his thing.

Only Prince could wear a g-string, with leg warmers and high heels and still snag more pussy than an animal control team.
