The guy spends a lifetime perfecting a technique which can be defeated by... standing two feet farther away.

Only a complete moran would stand that close. And, to see if the technique really works, let's put live ammo in the gun and see if he can grab the other guy's trigger hand without shooting himself in the face.

This just in -- a lot of carjackers and armed robbers are complete morans.

I know Marx -- I've seen him do the drill with snap cap rounds in the gun and ask the bad guy to try to shoot him. Doesn't happen.

I don't think doing that through a window of a car would net the same results.

"Okay, I'm not ready yet.  Hold the gun at shoulder height.  Let me position myself.  Okay, now I'm ready for you to threaten me."

So, the answer to this is more guns right?

You'd think that drinking all that beer would slow his reaction time.

And I prefer the much more tried-and-tested martial arts technique of disarming a gun-wielding attacked by throwing a spinning hook that sends the gun sailing from the assailant's hand. Another good option, if you are actually looking to take control of the weapon, is to do a jumping front snap kick that hits the bottom of the attacker's hand. This will cause the gun to go spinning up in the air over the attacker's head. You can then throw another snap kick to his stomach and follow that up (while he's doubled over with pain) with another kick to his head, which will knock him out of the way and possibly off his feet. Then you can leap forward (a roll will work here if you need to cover more ground) and catch then gun as it begins to fall. Remain in your defensive crouch with the weapon trained on your attacker until you are confident that the area is clear.

Thread over......I will get the lights.....

Gun disarms like this are fairly specific. Many knife disarms are defeated with a grip change--which is why when I trained with a blade, we started with the knife gripped with the blade held down to protect the wrist. The more common knife disarms run the risk of getting a nasty cut when you go for the lock, but that can be worked around with a strike across the top of the hand, which is similar to another set of techniques to break up a punch and strain or break the wrist. Gun disarms are terribly specific, because it is a terribly specific set of circumstances that has you close enough to even think about attempting them. The few that our security teams trained with usually wind up with broken fingers or a reverse that winds up discharging the weapon into the bastiche. We trained to end threats to our patrons though, not to preserve the lives of those who went after us and our patrons. Never had to do a gun disarm like this, and I pray I never do. They're not easy. They are very specific. We did have to disarm an off duty cop once, but that was keeping his hand and arm away from a holstered weapon, and we did it as a team, and he apologized after when he realized that he'd forgotten he was carrying it, and all we had to do was socket his arm to keep him from getting near the sucker.

They are very specific. Because the conditions that lead up to their possibility are fairly specific. If the conditions aren't right, you don't attempt it. Period. In fairness, most police are trained to not even try to draw a weapon if a suspect is within 21 feet, because in the time it takes to draw, someone will be on top of you. You keep a distance with a firearm for a reason. Not everyone gets that training though, and if someone is within arm distance, you have a chance. You train for those chances. There is no magical bullet shedding technique, and if folks are at a distance, your best bet is avoidance. But if they're in arm distance, and they're stupid, you have a chance.

Yes and no.

On one hand his disarm technique requires proximity. On the other hand the hours spent in the dojo to perfect something like that burn more calories than Hitler burnt Jews, so you can eat whatever and still be in shape. So while you get fat, he gets laid. The only gun he needs to worry about is his love gun.

2013-01-19 10:05:58 AM
This is a useless skill because you can launch a hydrogen weapon on a missile from another continent and he can't disarm that.

That seems like a limited use disarm which is likely to cause the weapon fire at a dangerous height and angle if you mess up or the hammer is already cocked. But I'm just talking.

I have known folks like that. A good friend of mine has been studying this stuff since early childhood (now in his mid 30s) and is quite the accomplished martial artist. The funny thing about him is that he's a total doofus when you meet him, but he has ridiculously-fast reflexes and is actually ripped.

It's weird.

No, just the whole hot mess of wharrgarbl out there. Confident people don't feel the need to talk about their weapon in public, all the time.

oh, gotcha. I don't get it either. Guns are fun, I guess - don't own any - but people do get a bit too excited about them (and about taking them away from others)

He's a little young to be a 7th degree in karate.  Must be that belt factory sport, Tae Kwon Do.

Or he created his own martial art and awarded himself a 7th degree...

After some googling it looks like he is a 7th degree blackbelt in Keichu-do, which was created by Karl W. Marx.

Would have been a lot cooler if the guy didn't have to set himself before trying to get the gun, the perp wasn't just holding the gun out there like he wanted to be disarmed, and that he wasn't farking smiling like an idiot to begin with.
