So, he's the biggest dope of all time.

Ok.

My girlfriend may be inflatable, but at least she's not invisible

So he really didn't answer any major questions, concerning his inconsistencies, except that he barely realized she wasn't real two days ago...so up until the Deadspin story, he still thought she was real?

C'mon man.

Well, he'll say he's done his interview, so no more talk of this as far as he's concerned, and I'm sure his dad is ready to "blacklist" everyone when they want to ask the poignant questions about the inconsistencies of his story.

2013-01-19 01:54:23 AM
I believe him. There's other stories coming about this hoaxer, this isn't his first time. This kid is just a naive Mormon.

2013-01-19 02:30:13 AM
Well that's the thing. He's either someone so into self-promotion that he'd create this just to further his chances with the Heisman, or he's stupider than a fully electrified turbocharged triple nuclear stupid machine.

Either way, any GM who drafts him better have a non-listed phone number and security guards.

2013-01-19 02:36:13 AM
I think he probably was hoaxed. He had such low selfesteem (ie mormon sexual repression) that he felt intimidated by real girls, and thus latched onto a girl he never had to actually meet. But he doesn't want to admit this, so he makes up the stuff about meeting her to make it less embarrassing.

That sexual repression is limited only to speaking about it in public, same as the drinking - you can get drunk and fark all you want, just don't actually talk about it. Or get picked up for DWI, if you're a "family values" congressman.

I think it started as a story, got out of control, made a wonderful narrative in a season of college football being associated with raping young boys in the shower, but he didn't have the brains to get some good PR advice when he needed to figure out a way to wind it down.

All he has to do is make some tackles and all will be forgotten.

If this is true, he is simultaneously the worst boyfriend ever and dumber than a box of bricks.

The guy in Cali (forget his name) admitted T'eo wasn't in on it yesterday and that he (the Cali guy) has done this to other college guys as well. This article is old news.

So, in the end, Teo is just one of the most naive (slow?) people alive, and nothing more.

Best case, he continued to perpetuate the lie after he (according to him and the school) knew that the story was a hoax.

I think, sadly, that lot of scenarios get pushed into the ideas of him being either too Mormon or too gay because, we as a society put such a negative connotation into these two states (religiousness or homosexuality) that it all becomes a humorous story that we can continue to push to the public without fear of the actual news media becoming a willing accomplice to the spread of this story.

Not that I think the media are entirely blameless (with the news outlets that first pushed the story of his "dead girlfriend" trying to deflect blame by claiming to have altered the details of their story when their routine fact-checking failed to establish a credible timeline). News outlets, such as Sports Illustrated or ESPN stand to profit from the fallout of this scandal as much as the story itself (if not more so) so they have no reason to independently verify the details of the story. (Attribute this to either clinical cynicism or chronic laziness.)

Even the folks at NBCSports are pointing out this was a puff piece, a "2 1/2" apologia in which Te'o was apparently never asked the hard questions, and got free reign to promote himself to boot.

Popcorn Johnny: He's in on it.

Yeah, Deadspin did a good job of pulling together the holes in the interview.

I said it in the other thread, but man, when Te'o and his people try to fill some of the big holes in the story (pun intended), they create a couple more in the process.

Also, ESPN removed a part of the story not too long ago, taking out mention of meeting this girl at the hotel before the BCS game.  Ok, I get sometimes you make mistakes in your writing, but that's a huge bit of detail to not get correct.

Also, Te'o's account completely contradicts Swarbrick's from Wed.

And this part is the kicker for me in the Deadspin update:

Manti Te'o's apparent defense is that he had no reason to think his twice-undead dead long-distance girlfriend, whom he never met or saw outside of photographs, whose funeral he never thought to attend, might have been a phony. Regardless of whether he's telling the truth, he'll soon see just how big embarrassment can get.

That's some good shiat right there.  So, now that he "told everyone his side of the story" he and his family will expect everyone to move on, and not talk about this anymore.  His friend Tuiasosopo (who he now claims he met Nov 24 for the first time) who didn't have anything to lose in this, only everything to gain, is the fall guy, and Te'o comes off as a victim.

Can I say it again?  Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

I don't care enough about US sports to investigate this story thoroughly but I get the impression that this guy is either batshiat insane or a pathological liar, and that either way he's farked his chances of making millions by going pro.

This is a big part of the story I have trouble with. It seems that everyone who may back Manti Te'o's side of the story (as improbable at best it may seem) seems to be in some way connected to him and his family. No one in the major media outlets seems to question that some of these people (Tuiasosopo, the alleged instigator), plus the family could stand to gain financially from perpetuating the lie that Te'o was some sort of unwilling victim in all of this and ignore the fact that even according to the timeline given by Te'o, his family, and Notre Dame, that he continued to give credibility to and further the lie of his "relationship" with this fake girlfriend.

It's just on of those scenarios that I can fail to see any good in.

This guy is either really stupid, really gay, or both. Either way, don't care that much outside of the freak show aspect. And that is already getting a bit old.

2013-01-19 08:50:58 AM
I don't see what the big deal about this whole thing is. The guy was drawing inspiration from the death of an imaginary person.

Isn't that what Tebow does all the time? (as well as many others)

Wait...people on the internet aren't really who they say they are??!?!

This changes everything. ESPN should devote 100% its coverage to this new information. The start of the hockey season, Earl Weaver's death, and that whatever crap with that "Conference Finals" in the NFL (whatever that is) get bumped down to the ticker.

I must know what Kobe thinks about this!!!

And lots of girls dig the shy thing and like being able to pull a guy out of their shell. I'm sure there's at least one that would be good with not having sex with him if he really is into that.

I'm positive this is why so many people think the gay angle is likely. It's the way he comes off the most sympathetic by a wide stretch (except for in the eyes of the homophobic of course). I honestly don't understand looking at him as if he's 100% the victim and seeing him as sympathetic...he's a farking moron and was completely deluded to think of her as his girlfriend despite never seeing her in person or even on Skype/Facetime.

So according to him three people where involved in this hoax over several years? The girl (the voice) would stay on the phone all nite long pretending to be sick in a hospital bed? Where is the pay off for these people? No way.

Also, he admitted that he and his parents sent flowers to her house after she died, to an address in a city that does not exist. The floral company didn't call back and say anything, they just took the money and pretended to deliver them? Maybe they were in on it too.

Yep - these are my two questions as well: (1) Were the hoaxsters that dedicated? (2) Why?
