"The semi-permanent paint markings used to identify sheep are called a paint or colour brand." says the Wikipedia article on branding, so I guess "brand" is the correct term in this situation. But you're right in that it's not the "hot branding" that we normally think of when we hear about branding.

Yet another stupid-ass manufactured "viral ad", with the permission and compensation of the farmers involved, accompanied by an article that basically lies its ass off presumably because the article's writer or publisher were also compensated for their efforts.

This is why I hate "viral advertising."
