From the Article:
Sam Wilson, Game and Parks carnivore manager, told commissioners at their meeting Friday in Omaha that the state's estimated permanent population of 22 cats is large enough for a "limited harvest."

22?

22?

Twenty farking Two ?!?!?

22 cougars in the entire state. 1,855,525 humans. But it's the cougars that are out of control and need to be slaughtered? BULLshiat!

Anyone who murders a cougar in Nebraska is a monster who deserves the death penalty for it.

Ah! Much better. :)

22 is the number of cats living in the one region, not the entire state. Depending on the size of the area, it could be a problem.
Before you work up too much outrage, you might want to finish the article.

I did finish the article sweeheart. In fact, i quoted it.

But the article online today is very different from the article that was online last night.

From the current article, right at the top: Published Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 1:00 am / Updated at 12:45 pm

The new one is about 3 times longer and provides a lot more detail. The original claimed that there were 22 cougars in the whole state, not in one small porition, and the original article made no mention of biological studies or environmental impacts from wildfires. So apparently the real situation is very different from how it was originally presented. (Some editor needs to get reamed for letting the first article be published at all.)

Oh well. The new information tones down my reaction, but does not change my fundamental stance. Humanity still has no right to "manage" the populations of other species while refusing to manage its own. I reject anthropocentrism, in fact. Humanity is not inherently superior to other species and we have no more right to subjugate them than they have a right to subjugate us. The arrogance and narcissism of anthrpocentrism is what has led us to the brink of environmental catatrophe today, and this proposed cougar hunting is just another small example.

Cougars are different from wolves, bears and most other predators in that can and will actively hunt humans. By way of point there have been only 2 cases of wolves killing humans in all of North America ever. Cougars average just under one human kill per year.

This doesn't take into account all of the pets and livestock that they kill. In fact a mass disappearance of pets is usually one of the first signs that a cougar has moved into an area. It's more of a problem when cougars start moving back into suburban areas (I have personally had a sighting of one that was DNR confirmed in the Twin Cities). Practical advice like this is why people get excited about cougars and police officers shoot cougars near schools on sight.

If you live in potential lion territory

Don't allow children to play alone outdoors or walk to or from the bus stop
Don't leave pets outdoors
Don't feed pets or other prey animals (such as raccoons and deer) outdoors, as both the food and the animals may attract lions
Don't go outdoors for long periods or at the same time every day

Mountain lions don't actively hunt humans. They actively hunt prey in their territories. Attacks on humans usually come from a person being in the wrong place at the wrong time and a hungry cat finding them. It's not like they intentionally prowl around neighborhoods looking for a human specifically.

Your forefathers also spent enormous energy in pretending that the issue of slavery was a, not a problem, b, never going to be a problem, and c, anyone who said it was a problem was the problem. And clearcutting all the trees in an area was a really good way to provide farmland and would never backfire on them. And single-crop agriculture was the way to go, just kick more natives off land when the soil got exhausted.

Nebraska was NEVER a slave state.

no, it was a slave territory. nebraska city, especially. not like us good iowans. no, never like us you backwards cornshuckers. now go bow down to lincoln and worship your tom osborne god, freak

Like how to build a house with a door that locks? How to use electricity? How to get back in the car when you see a lion? How to set up farmer's insurance for livestock?

How to scare away a mountain lion?

I love how at the end of every device description it states it hasn't been proven to work on lions
