F*ck Jonah Goldberg right in the neck

Not gonna happen.

While the liberals try to gather everyone under the tent, GOP is not interested.

They don't just want more voters. They insist those voters convert to their way of thinking. Kind of in a religious way, like Islam. Which asplains a lot.

They're still trying to ride the fence and it's pure comedy.

They want to try to attract new voters that they have historically spurned and used as scapegoats, but they can't be 'seen' as trying to do so by their core voters.

So, it's this schizophrenic 'reaching out with one hand' and 'balling the other up into a fist' with the other.

It's like watching a failing frat house desperately try to recruit new members.

"I tell you bro, we have legendary parties every weekend, Madden in the common room every day after class, and our intramural flag football team is really shaping up!"
"Yeah?"
"Oh, absolutely. And don't worry, dude, there are always one or two fat sorority girls hanging around that you can totally hook up with."

Wow, you should totally read the linked article, if you can stomach some Goldberg. The opening sentence alone is worth the nausea:

It's hard for a lot of people, particularly on the right, to recognize that the conservative movement's problems are mostly problems of success.

That is top tier delusional thinking! Wow! I want to commend Goldberg for being completely out of touch with EVERYTHING!

I dunno, maybe he's right. They have successfully conveyed their contempt for the average American and every working person in the country. They successfully implemented their agenda for most of GW Bush's administration with only token resistance. Their long-term plan to extract all of the wealth from the working and middle classes has been phenomenally successful. I could believe that, having been so successful, people have seen clearly the shiat they're selling and want no more of it.

But I doubt that's what Jonah "Everything Bad Ever Is Because Of Liberals And For $29.99 Plus Tax I'll Tell You Why" Goldberg meant.

Yes, sadly, both of these. If their plan was to be full-time money grubbing dicks, then yes, they've succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. Alas, Jonah did not mean that in his article. What he meant was, "We've succeeded at being dicks, but still nobody likes us and I can't understand why."

First sentence FTFA: Jonah Goldberg, conservative intellectual, revealed in his syndicated column yesterday that the conservative movement is apparently full of "hucksters eager to make money from stirring rage, paranoia, and an ill-defined sense of betrayal with little concern for the real political success that can come only with persuading the unconverted."

I got about this far before I started tearing up from laughter.

That sounds like an Onion headline, which means a Republican candidate will say something to that effect soon enough.

I thought that asshole was bad enough, but then when I read his Wikipedia entry today I learned that he's buddy-buddy with George W. Bush, and had considered running for Governor of Texas.

Being a lying, sociopathic bully, he fits right into the GOP.

Jonah Goldberg is also a touchy little douche. He blocked me on twitter because I had the audacity to question his ridiculous book about how the Nazis were really liberals.

2013-01-18 09:05:32 PM
Now is the time for the sane Republicans to reform their party and join the Democrats when important legislation comes up. They don't have to agree to much, but they need to break ranks. This will cause an inevitable backlash from the far-right and primary challenges will ensue. We'll see how the electorate chooses: moderate Republican, Democrat or far-right crazy person. Breaking and then fixing the GOP should be among Obama's high priorities over the next four years.

2013-01-18 09:05:57 PM
Poor Jonah, still thinks it's how they say things not the actual things they say that's the problem.

Give him half a pity point for correctly pointing out that most RW media is in the "gin up the fake outrage" game and not in the "try to inform and possibly change people's minds with facts" one.

Yakk: Watching the "brains" of the GOP movement try and figure out what is going on is hilarious and sad at the same time.

Right? They want to criticize their own, but the whole "no apologies" thing + Reagan's 11th Commandment makes it damn near impossible.

Also their very visible Tea Party base who attracts lots of attention for saying extreme things has their own conservative brand of political correctness and they'll crucify any RINO who offends their incredibly limited worldview.

You did it to yourself, conservatives. And that's why it really hurts.

He should admit the biggest mistake the Republicans ever made was letting the Neo-conservatives take control of the party.

Poor Jonah, still thinks it's how they say things not the actual things they say that's the problem.

This is the new post-election meme. "It's not that the majority of Americans don't really, really want our crazy right-wing nutjob ideas. We just didn't explain those ideas well enough."

It's like the douchebag who thinks -- "if I keep asking that hottie out, eventually she'll crack. She just doesn't understand what an awesome guy I am."

Um, no. Sorry, guys. America just isn't that into you. It's not that you're not explaining things right. We get it -- we just don't want to go out with you.

A conversation:

Note: My speech is underlined.

"Well, property taxes...I don't want to get into that, it makes me mad. I hate paying them, it means I don't really own my own [slightly upper middle class condominium]. Now I have to talk to that fellow who hasn't paid me for his purchase from my eBay page yet."

[Fox Fluffy News almost constantly playing in the background]

I lived with a family in (EU country redacted) for a year and the father deliberately went on unemployment/welfare so he wouldn't have to pay the 60% taxes."

But we have people who don't want to pay the taxes HERE. Why is not wanting to pay taxes good in one place and bad in another??

"Because the Europeans don't have a work ethic! In some countries you aren't permitted by law to work more than 30 hours a week!"

They are not SLAVES!!

But WE are free to choose!!

[at this point the conversation was abruptly but politely terminated]

My next statement "CHOOSE WHAT!?" Work two, maybe three part time jobs in some cases, and still never break even!? would have escalated the exchange into DEFCON4 and that was very definitely NOT the purpose for my presence at the person's residence.

[this person has an advanced college education, spent at least a year living in Europe, travels at least twice a year, ancestry is traceable some 700 years back, family in Northern California runs an excellent winery, and has forgotten literally ALL American history pertaining to anti immigrant sentiment in the early 1900s concerning immigration FROM EUROPE including Italy]

Ten seconds later:

Um, OK.

So...we pay them too much but we need to give them guns? With what money?

Reminds me of the other day when I overheard a bunch of "job creators" biatching about President Obama banning guns by executive order, one of them said "We have the 'have nots' telling the 'haves' what to do." They have absolutely nothing but contempt for anyone other than themselves. When talking to at those they disagree with to convey those "superior conservative views", first they try to scare you to joining them and if that don't work they get all angry trying to bully you into joiningthem.

Uh, I live in Bakersfield California and...uh....ya know, these people I've known for 20 years or so are not evil people. They've just been completely mentally paralyzed and eaten by Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and Michael the All-Screaming All-Savage Rampaging Weiner.

How awesome is that? It's the old, "It's a cookbook!" schtick, just like The Road To Serfdom. When they can come out and just be that blatant about it, you've got to hand it to them: they've got their audience's brain by the balls.
