I'm guessing a combination of hard drive failure/wipe/etc. plus Apple's policy of not letting you redownload stuff (although they usually allow it if you explain to them the situation, at least the first time). Not sure if they've changed that recently, I haven't dealt with iTunes for awhile.

I realise that if you lose a CD you have no choice but to rebuy, however, digital purchases, especially those attached to an individual account, are different in nature to CDs.

But to have to beg and explain why you want to redownload? Good god, just let people download their purchases already.

Everything I've ever bought from apple shows up in iTunes with a cloud link to redownload. I've downloaded stuff straight to my phone many times that I didn't have loaded. I think some people might want to log into iTunes and take a look.

Amazon has been doing this for some time with their Kindle app. Apple seems not to care, Amazon sells books on iDevices. Everyone seems to get by just fine

Not a big deal for big acts. For indies though? Apple's cut is a bit obscene.

Didn't Apple try and force other browser-based services to toe Apple's line on price, or get shut out? That is, if the website offered a discount, the same discount *had* to be offered via iTunes, or Apple would remove the app.

Not sure if that got settled or not, but I can see this playing out in a similar manner - at least until Amazon points out that they also have a building full of lawyers.

Rest assured it's not just Apple writing bad software for Windows -- iTunes suck pretty hard on Mac too. It goes all single-threaded on a pretty regular basis, plays terribly with slow (i.e. network) disks, can't handle large libraries, doesn't report write errors, incorporates 1000 different features that should be separate apps, demands a full-time exclusive lock on the library file, etc.

I'm pretty sure Apple is aware of the suck, they just either don't care, or don't know how to fix it. Things are slightly complicated because on Windows they don't want to make you install and update 7 different apps to use all their products and services, but that's not much of an excuse.

What the hell are you people doing that iTunes works so badly for you? Asking it to perform quadratic equations?

Since the entire process is done through a browser, an iOS update won't change anything.

Of course, Safari get a new feature where it couldn't save files to the music library w/o a 20 step process to change the default option. You know, for simplicity and user safety and stuff.

There are other browsers available for iOS.

I've been using it since the very first version, and I've never had a single problem with it.

I've downloaded my entire collection onto my computer multiple times. It's under 'store', then 'purchased', then 'download all or download all not on this computer'.

That WAS the policy at some point, but multiple high value and name lawsuits made them step back and go 'uh, you know what, here', and that was years ago.

poot_rootbeer: Mac Farkers, I've been using iTunes 11 for a couple weeks now and decided I hate it. I didn't mind the performance in earlier versions, but every single problem profplump mentions now manifest to a ridiculous extent. Making a single change to a track often results in the entire app beachballing for seconds at a time.

Has anybody attempted downgrading to 10.7 in a way that doesn't require restoring the iTunes Library files from Time Machine and therefore losing all the changes I've made since upgrading?

What sort of changes are you talking about? I've used it to chop up songs to create ringtones and had no hiccups.

After updating to the most current iTunes release, I started seeing music that I purchased back in 2006, that I've totally forgot about, show up with a cloud link.

Apple keeps a log of everything you purchase on your Apple ID. Pretty decent.
