He brings up a few good points, but there's a little more filler than I would like. I'd give it a 7.5/10.

I'd give it 7 of 9.

Yes, icon.

He's not an icon. He's a "B" movie/TV actor.

I believe he first said it when he was prank-called by the Howard Stern show. (Which was hilarious.)

Sobrrr: I absolutely love history and I can tell you, the internment camps were NEVER mentioned in school. Weird. I didn't learn about them until George. It's certainly another shameful factoid of American history, but not as much as excluding it from history studies, it's a powerful lesson in paranoia.

Really? Where and when did you go to school?

I was in 5th or 6th grade when I had to do a project/report on Manzanar for history. I learned all about that, the Trail of Tears, and much of the rest of the nasty things the U.S. has done. Except why, exactly, the Texans got into a war against Mexico. Somehow, wanting slavery just never came up. For the two years of Texas history I had, it was never mentioned. So, as a reference point, this was in a Texas public school around 1996-1998.

It was mentioned in my history classes. If you really want to talk about atrocities America committed and then buried try the American-Philippine War

No, this is not correct. He's done a lot for the LGBT community. He doesn't have so many followers for wrong reasons.

This. He used his small legion of fans (pre-internet) to help draw attention to a lot of LGBT issues. As part of that the man himself became the focus of a lot of attention, and what people discovered is that he is a genuinely nice and interesting guy with a decent amount of wit. Most importantly, unlike a crapton of other far less famous celebrities he is able to laugh at himself when it is deserved.

Basically, he's the kind of guy who you always like to see at a party or get-together, which in itself doesn't make him a celebrity. On top of that, he's starred in at least one hugely famous show from ages ago, which gives him some minor celebrity. Combine the two though and it turns into real, actual celebrity.

Why are the majority of people looking up to him? For today's version of FW:FW:FW:FW:FW: this is so funny! or his work in the LGBT community? Judging from his book title, he'd rather be remembered for the former.

"Read about George Takei's meteoric rise and dominance of the Internet in Oh Myyy (There Goes the Internet), published of course in electronic format. In this groundbreaking, hilarious and informative book, Takei recounts his experiences on platforms such as Twitter, YouTube and Facebook, where fans and pundits alike have crowned him King. He muses about everything from the nature of viral sharing, to the taming of Internet trolls, to why Yoda, bacon and cats are such popular memes. Takei isn't afraid to tell it likes he sees it, and to engage the reader just as he does his legions of fans."

Yep, pretty much what I expected. Not a book about his other admirable efforts.

Have you seen the future and all that anyone remembers of George Takei was "LOL he talked about roflcopters!"? Do you believe that a person can write only one book in his life and that's it, and he squandered it on this? Seriously, why is this driving you up a wall so badly?

whistleridge: Bondith: not5am: Spanky McStupid: I would like to see the play he developed - American-Japanese internment is not brought up a lot.

(And I would wear my Takei apparel to the play.)

which is a damn shame as it's repeating itself with guantanamo. but i guess it's overshadowed by the holocaust and japan's treatment of pows and forced comfort women.

what's really surprising is this is a historical example of federal government interment camps of us citizens, but it's not even referenced by foxnews and teabaggers in their fear mongering.

1) Teabaggers suck at history.
2) It didn't happen to white people.

That bears repeating. 3 or 4 times, even.

Also, George Takei is awesome. How many other minor supporting actors from mid-60s TV shows are still absolutely culturally relevant today? How many from the 70s? 80s? And of those that are, how many have only done so by becoming parodies of themselves (Shatner, the Hoff, etc)?

Good for him. Also, the stuff he puts on my Facebook feed beats the usual crap political rants and baby pictures that most people put up by a loooooooooooooooooooooong shot.

Too bad people don't realize that German American and some Italian Americans were also interred during WWII  (and WWI as well).   Now, it was not done NEAR to the scale that the Japanese interrment was done, but it wasn't JUST the Japanese who were interred (as many of them would like you to believe.)

It wasn't lost... just not included in most Syndication packages.

Same goes for the series finale, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, And honestly, the entire fourth season, the season of hourlong episodes, was kind of a rarity until cable.

N ow, everything is available either on DVD or in syndication, if any network is still showing Twilight Zone.

Also he's the Emperor of Japan

Don't doubt it. After all, the King of Thailand was born in Massachusetts and could run for president here if he chose to.

No he couldn't The King of Thailand was never an American citizen he was the child of diplomats.Children ofdiplomats to the United States are not subject to U.S. jurisdiction and do not acquire U.S. citizenship under the 14th Amendment or the laws derived from it. Nicole Kidman was born in the US  but could not run for president and she has never claimed US birthright citizenship.

I want to rewatch Space Cases. Granted it was an incredibly cheesy sci-fi Nickelodeon kid's show, even back then when I was in middle school, it was just... different for its time and somehow an amalgam of all the geeky things I loved: George Takei, Bill Mumy, Babylon 5, ect.

And Jewel Staite. Regarding Firefly, having not seen her since Space Cases, I was like "Holy cow, she grew up."

"What kind of dope would throw a perfectly good earth bear into space?"

borg: Kevin72: Fano: Kevin72: Matticus: He's an icon for everything he did pre 2009 (or whenever he discovered the internet). Everything he's done since is a novelty. Not saying he's horrible, just done nothing to warrant how great everyone says he is now. Fark reposts old memes all the time, but it does more than just that and the world doesn't touch itself to how witty farkers are.

You are not grasping the multidimensional George Takei. Posting memes on Facebook makes him wildly popular with teenyboppers ie kids who might be all ga-ga about Justin Bieber. George Takei also does plenty to appeal to 20-somethings, to young adults, to old adults. Like the Beatles. When they first appeared, they appealed to teens, now all age groups has fans.

If the King of Thailand really wanted to run for president, he could claim his birthright citizenship. Unlikely though as he has done a good enough job being king for 66 2/3 freaking years, and who wants to go through that whole birth certificate thing again.

I see you're a Democrat because you're too stupid to understand that  Children of diplomats born here are not US Citizens  and may not claim a birthright. The King of Thailand was never a US Citizen nor has he ever claimed to be.

Glad someone else got that. :-)

On a somewhat sadder note, did you know that Peter David, co-creator and head writer of that series and so much else, suffered a stroke about three weeks ago (December 29)? He's in rehab and seems to be doing okay. If his works have brought you anywhere near the enjoyment they've brought me, you may want to drop by his website or Twitter feed and post some well-wishes.

As for B5, one of the best allusions to it was on the Star Trek homage episode of Futurama, when Fry says, "Look at Walter Kœnig. After Star Trek, he became an actor!"

Ordinarily I would have considered you a namecalling Republican and continued believing the 14th Amendment was inviolable, but since I have you favorited for sticking up for Sam Wo's restaurant, I will consider the exception that you are claiming and research it for myself later.

Matticus: Klippoklondike: Matticus: is it about a once popular person's desperate attempt to stay relevant by reposting the latest internet meme?
DNTFA

Desperate?  He's more popular than he's ever been.

and for no reason other than reposting stuff or repeating jokes and one-liners. take away the stream of reddit posts and what is he? nothing.

This is a textbook example of "haters gonna hate".

Betty White and Takei were both the biggest sluts* in show business before they got married. Badaboom! Badabing!

; ) I say that with love.

To understand all is to love all.

*Well, except for Doris Day, perhaps.
