He's still fairly popular and he's going to win at least two Tony Awards this year for Allegiance.  He's an awesome guy.

Here's a great interview with Takei on Penn Jillette's

I've read his book, I thought it was OK.

He brings up a few good points, but there's a little more filler than I would like. I'd give it a 7.5/10.

(And I would wear my Takei apparel to the play.)

which is a damn shame as it's repeating itself with guantanamo. but i guess it's overshadowed by the holocaust and japan's treatment of pows and forced comfort women.

what's really surprising is this is a historical example of federal government interment camps of us citizens, but it's not even referenced by foxnews and teabaggers in their fear mongering.

Do you not remember Bachmann and her acolytes (I want to call them spirochetes) hyperventilating about the census by invoking the internment of Japanese-Americans (even though there's specific Federal Law that prevents census data from being used for anything but the census)?

Also, isn't internment what the fear of FEMA camps is hearkening to? They may not call it by name, but you don't have to use a ruler to draw a straight line between the two.

That bears repeating. 3 or 4 times, even.

Also, George Takei is awesome. How many other minor supporting actors from mid-60s TV shows are still absolutely culturally relevant today? How many from the 70s? 80s? And of those that are, how many have only done so by becoming parodies of themselves (Shatner, the Hoff, etc)?

Good for him. Also, the stuff he puts on my Facebook feed beats the usual crap political rants and baby pictures that most people put up by a loooooooooooooooooooooong shot.

What all three have in common is that they figured out a way to rebrand themselves and find a new generation of fans.   Helped in no smart part by the Internets.  And thanks to that - all three are working real gigs again and being successful at it.  Exactly what is the problem with that again?

Hell no. I was just responding to issue 2 cited above because I know someone would jump on it to tell them they didn't know what they were talking about. Using that as an excuse why it was ok.

I think it was absolutely reprehensible and totally changed the face of California if you ever studies some of the socioeconomic fallout. The businesses they owned were bought up for pennies on the dollar many times.

Yes, icon.

Like it or not, he has followers for different facets of his life.

He's an icon for everything he did pre 2009 (or whenever he discovered the internet). Everything he's done since is a novelty. Not saying he's horrible, just done nothing to warrant how great everyone says he is now. Fark reposts old memes all the time, but it does more than just that and the world doesn't touch itself to how witty farkers are.

No, this is not correct. He's done a lot for the LGBT community. He doesn't have so many followers for wrong reasons.

Few people can unite conservatives and liberals under the umbrella of George Takei's charisma.

I absolutely love history and I can tell you, the internment camps were NEVER mentioned in school. Weird. I didn't learn about them until George. It's certainly another shameful factoid of American history, but not as much as excluding it from history studies, it's a powerful lesson in paranoia.
