They are below the equator. When we have summer, they have winter. When we have fall, they have spring. It has to do with the way that the earth wobbles.

The thermometer at work. This was early in the day about 11:30am and not even at its peak. It got to about 48c where we were but a bit further west there were reports of 49c

Add high altitude and you're describing summer in West Virginia.

No, it's because of the singular polarity of the earth's rays is 180 degrees from ours, magnified by the fact their shiatty air consists of nearly 80% nitrogen. The reason why is because of the Sahara Dessert is too much sand and not enough trees and vegetation, so the natural flatulence of a nearly all-beef diet by the locals creates it's own little biodome of funk and heat.

Like a big-ass Dutch Oven.

For reference: the normal high today in Sydney is 77 F. So 114 F is a BFD.

texdent: That's Texas in August.

No, it's not.

There are only three record highs in Texas over 115 EVER, and they happened in 1980 and 1994 (116, 117, and 120). There are no other highs of 115 or over. Even during its "record heat-wave" in 2011 the hottest temperature anywhere in the entire state was 112 (Austin, with a previous high of 107). The normal average temperature for Texas during August is in high 80s to low 90s.

What is this perverse thing with Americans and talking up their hot weather? Especially when there is actual data available?

Or is not about talking up America, but talking DOWN the experiences of others? Making them lesser than American experiences? That says a bunch of bad staff about your national psyche. Maybe find something of substance to feel proud about, if there is anything.

Hey, some of us Michiganders are f--king trying, ok?  Like swimming upstream against Lansing and the utility companies spending a f--king fortune convincing people that green energy will cost them money.  While spending money they got from the consumers for those ads.  Goddamn, I'd admire their balls if it wasn't so f--king effective.  Oh, and don't forget "JOBS!"  Because we truly do produce so much f--king coal in Michigan.

/I really didn't know that about Ontario.  Props, eh.  Pretty awesome.

Australia is south of the equator, so thermometers work in reverse: instead of measuring how warm it is, they measure how cold it isn't.

Sydney is 33.8683° S, which just a bit S of where Phoenix would be if Earth were upside-down. It also has a similar elevation to SW Arizona.

Just sayin'
