How many Florida hunters are missing? Snakes have 99.9999% more of Florida to snack through.

They can lay up to 50 eggs. If half of those caught were females (lets round down to 10) then they've potentially stopped about 500 snakes from being introduced into the area.

Hunting is fun. Hunting a giant snake is badass.

Besides, the python is destroying the ecosystem and any reduction is good.

Finding out precisely which habitats they prefer could go a long way to helping eradicate them where they don't belong, in the Everglades.

This is a first step.

You mean it's harder to hunt an animal that prefers to hide, is stealthy, camouflaged, doesn't run from hunters, leaves few tracks, and doesn't congregate in herds?

Wow, I'd have thought you could hunt pythons like they were deer or pigs.

2013-01-18 03:03:27 PM
They had one of those snakes on Letterman last night, with their regular animal guy guest Jack Hanna. It took 3 guys to hold the thing, and Jack said it had over 200 teeth, and if it bit you, it would take 30 minute to unclench its jaw. It can also unhinge its jaw wide enough to swallow an entire human being.

I'll stay away from Florida now, if I ever needed another excuse.

2013-01-18 03:06:23 PM
I need to get my dad back into the training hunting dog business so he can start working on some python dogs to market. This has some potential since the pythons will eliminate a lot of the dogs so demand should be really high for the next decade or so.

Well, deer prefer to hide, are stealthy, camouflaged, and often don't run from hunters. And often, if the deer you are seeking is a buck, it is solitary most of the time.

If you're referring to Onan, Jews interpret that story slightly differently than Christians do. Onan's sin was in not impregnating his sister-in-law to continue his dead brother's line - he preferred beating off to sex with Tamar.

I have heard opinions (minority opinions) that masturbation, so long as you're not married, is A-OK. (I think there may be a few other circumstances as well.)

I know that they are cold blooded animals, but would it make sense for someone to bring one of those fancy Infrared cameras and just look around at night?

It would be obvious to see what would be a coiled up snake hiding on land and what would be an alligator.

Better to just use a house mouse, already abundant in the Everglades and easy to buy for super cheap from pet stores everywhere. Lightweight GPS tags are still a little pricey, and I'm not sure how long they would last inside a python's digestive tract, but it'd also enable you to track a python's movements once the critter has been swallowed and learn a bit more about them.

It's not for fun. Pythons don't belong in the Everglades. They're there because some hipster douchebags thought it would be cool to have them as pets, got tired of them and dumped them in the glades. Now they've multiplied and are destroying the ecosystem, eating everything from deer to birds to whatever else is out there. They all have to be destroyed, period.

Often, the kinds of clothes that are suited for outdoor activities like hunting are camouflaged. Do you expect them to go out and buy a whole new outfit just for snake hunting?

Also, no one is likely to mistake an upright human for a Burmese Python.

Depends. You wear orange while hunting turkeys, or any game which has excellent color vision, and you're likely going home empty.

Also, orange isn't commonly worn during archery seasons, because generally if you are within bow range, you can see whether it's a camouflaged hunter or a deer.

Similarly, during muzzleloader season, I often eschew wearing orange, for much the same reasons, but it does depend on who I'm hunting with (if they are newbies, I wear orange).

If I'm hunting coyotes, it's outside the "normal" deer season, and I'm calling them into me, and I don't wear orange.
