(Newsday)   It looks like Fox's strategy of "psst hey you wanna see two chicks fight? Watch American Idol and you'll see a real live diva catfight" Didn't actually boost Idol's ratings even a little bit   (newsday.com) divider line 62

If a rigged "reality" show has a rigged catfight and no one watches it, did it really make a sound?

Drunk Astronaut: If a rigged "reality" show has a rigged catfight and no one watches it, did it really make a sound?

"The two-hour telecast delivered 16.2 million viewers and a 5.6 rating among adults 18-49." That's a whole lot of no one. It's not the unstoppable force it once was, but it's still a top 10 (probably top 5) guarantee. For comparison the most watched episode of 30 Rock was just over half that.

//Don't watch it, but to say no one does is pants on head retarded.

ddam: Mugato: Gosling: Awful auditions just waste time they could be spending trying to get a contender over with the crowd

But don't all the mouth breathers always say, "My favorite part is the beginning when the really bad contestants make fools of themselves! Where's my foam helmet?". I always heard that around the office.

My wife is the reason I watch these type of shows and the only auditions she'll watch are for So You Think You Can Dance and The Voice. The other ones she's tried watching them but she'd rather study some IT stuff or sleep than waste her time on the auditions.

That's because on SYTYCD and The Voice, most of the contestants are already semi-professional anyways. So you're not gonna get the level of fail an open cattle-call all-comers audition like AI or AGT produces.

CapeFearCadaver: What farking puzzles me is why was the local news talking about goddamn American Idol this morning while there's ice on the roads? Shut the fark, why are you 'reporting' on a TV show? If I cared I'd have watched it and therefore don't need a play by play from the motherfarking NEWS. Assholes.

You're a transplant same as me right? Is it farking ridiculous how they hype any weather event down here or what? And that Fishel guy dont know if his asshole is punched or bored, that dipshiat wont commit to anything! I stood in knee deep snow while my bus driver drove her cheesewagon without tires chains down an icy dirt road to pick me up But schools here were delayed or cancelled before the first flake fell! They love to drive in the mud down here but they nut up at snow?

Can't stand Nicki Minaj, she looks like an anime character drawn by a Parkinson's patient.

INeedAName: Benevolent Misanthrope: That's because no one gives half a shiat about Idol any more.  Or any of the "talent contest" shows.  It's done.

I disagree. Both The Voice and The Sing Off are excellent shows with a decent following. However they are entirely about the talent, not the drama.

Of course the shows you like are the "real" ones.....ALL "reality" shows are fake and they are the lowest common denominator of entertainment...but it's real to you, damn it@

"Well, there is a strain of that going around... but that's why the trainwreck auditions are on the outs these days. I think the shows are coming to realize that their credibility, after a while, depends on them actually producing talent. The most valuable prize they can offer is legitimate long-term stardom, but none of them can outright promise it because they don't know if any of their contestants will achieve it, and ultimately, that isn't up to them to decide. Awful auditions just waste time they could be spending trying to get a contender over with the crowd. American Idol has suffered in recent years because they haven't produced anyone lately. All they've been able to do in recent years is churn out one-hit wonders, with the one hit being the song provided to the winner. That's not enough. "

Wrong. Idol has several artists selling over a million digital downloads, including Phillip Phillips' who is only 400k away from Kelly Clarkson's Stronger as the biggest Idol-participant selling song. Underwood, et all have gone on to pretty decent success, and the percentages are the same as any other major record label - 7 don't make money, 2 break even, 1 makes the profit.

By your thinking, The Bachelor shouldn't be popular - it is, and only one out of the 15-whatever years has stayed together.
