(a) I... I think I less-than-three you. In a man-cave appropriate way, of course.

(b) We're gonna have to disagree on the open layout, though, and I think in a few years we're going to be seeing a lot of Homeowner-DIY-show "so, we're installing new walls here..." episodes, after all the "let's tear out walls!" versions. A wet bar / taps is nice, but I want the mess of meal production / dirty dishes somewhere else, waiting to be dealt with through the haze of a hangover the next morning.

Of course, I could see the benefit if one has children, perhaps. To each their own.

... or thrown off a cliff. ; ) Easy 10kt+ off the wind in 15-20 with only a main up, while comfortably enjoying a glass of wine / beer in your hand. If you stow the glassware and put the big, colorful sail up, I've seen twice that in a good breeze. I can also do 50+kts upwind... on a trailer.

I could see the appeal of the comfy, warm, semi-automated pocket cruiser, but I enjoy the ultralight, responsive, planing-in-the-right-conditions approach to the world. Yeah, there's no formal head and you have, at best, a camp stove, but you can get where you're going quickly -- then stay in a hotel! Yeah, being light and tippy makes it a tougher introduction for guests, and certainly more of a challenge in iffy weather, but there's nothing quite like watching a crab-crusher-experienced sailor stumble backwards as your ultralight jumps up in acceleration with a puff! This diversity of options, of course, is why many people can't own just one boat... fortunately, right now, I have the lid screwed on tight, but we'll see if that changes.

Stay safe out there! (Guess that's the big downside... land-based caves rarely sink.)

stupiddream: Mine is a 20x25 two car garage.  I am able to fit a bar size pool table, a pinball machine, an arcade video game, an elec. drum kit, a bar, a small table with two benches, several guitars and amps, PA speakers, several mic stands, an entertainment center my dad built with my sterio in it, two large shelves (one filled with 3500 LPs) and a desk with my computer and assorted other stuff like the diorama model I'm working on now on it.

I can see an open kitchen being good for daily family grinds, so while X makes dinner everyone else sits around and chats (my family did something along those lines), rather than trapping X in the kitchen for hours away from the family entirely.

yeah, i was off my rocker a little. i am not opposed to an open kitchen. but, i've noticed that they aren't as wonderful for entertaining as people think and people on those home buying shows act like they are the most important things on earth.

I'm glad you mentioned this. I hate that they call it a "man cave". I'm a woman, and you could say that my entire house is a man cave. I have a dedicated theater room (100" screen with theater seating), speakers in the ceilings of every room, and a full bar. The pool table is next, but I have to clear out some more space for it. My friends (most of whom are also female) LOVE to come to my house for movie nights and parties. I throw a huge Super Bowl party every year, but since my preferred sports to watch are college basketball and MLB, I also throw Final Four and World Series parties.

This idea that women aren't interested in sports or wouldn't enjoy having a big TV, bar, and pool table in their house is ridiculous. What year is it, anyway?

What I refer to as my man cave is simply a loft with my stuff in it, but unless there's a way to lock and soundproof it so I can't be summoned by the wife every 5 seconds, it's utterly useless.

But at least I have a room for all my guitars, Klingon and wrestling figures and Van Halen albums.

It's playing the averages.

I have a 'man cave', but I don't really call it that. My definition doesn't involve the penis-compensating crap shown in most of these pictures, nor does it involve sports decor, but it is the one room I have selected in the house to show off my own decor, awards, etc., allowing the rest of the house to be skull/geek-free and dedicated to kids, family, and 'normality'. Likewise, my GF...a bunny collector...has her bunny collection restricted to her 'cave'.

'man cave' always makes me think of Little Rascals-esque hand-written signs which proclaim 'No gurls aloud!'

I have my home office / study, though it is purely office at the moment since I don't have money for anything but the wedding. I will eventually have 7ft bookshelves, a proper server for scotch, a comfortable non-office desk chair or two, and a classy rug. We also discussed french doors, which I wouldn't mind. It isn't exceptionally large (10x13 IIRC) but it is mine.

Upstairs I have what we jokingly call the "man room" - though she does generally stay out of there. About 14x2 with a projector and 106" screen, modest Onkyo HTIB and all my gaming-related things. I splurged here on the furniture though if I could do it again I'd probably do something different.. it's a large sectional with all power reclining seats, including a chaise that goes flat. The reclining chairs have massagers and both sections have flip up reading lights. The former 47" ambilight sits against a wall and that's about it. No time/$ to paint and acquire "stuff".. in due time, in due time.

Not to mention the resolution is not very good. Guy has 30 grand in firearms and skimps out with a couple cheap TV's instead of real monitors.

Mine was salvaged when we had a water leak in the house. No pad, just the bare carpet. Really does help prevent fatigue when standing for hours on end.

Heh. I might have to look into it, if only to acquire a new skill. I do have a lot of cheap tools that could stand to look a lot cooler....

SFSailor: Not a big fan of a super-sports-theme-y motif, though. Tacky to me, unless you played on or were otherwise employed by the team.... but to each their own.

I've seen this thought (or similar) in many threads around the idea of "man caves", but I don't understand it. Especially when paired with other "more appropriate" examples which have included movie posters or Skyrim, or other video game related things. I'm assuming most people that have a LOTR poster didn't work on the movie.

Also many people have stated that they aren't limited to one room of the house, the whole house is theirs to do with as they please. This is where I say it can be tacky. A Golden Tee machine would look wrong in a dining room, but would not be out of place in a finished basement. A tool poster (actual tools, not the band) would look right in a garage, but not in a family room. It's not (for me) a place to hide from my wife or my family, but a place where some of my hobbies (video games, movies, sports, bar games) are more appropriate. A Reservoir Dogs poster works in a dorm room (or a man cave), but doesn't work in an adult living room (unless your initials are QT).

Technically, it's the "man loft" but I can pretend it's a cave.
