The victim is safe and with her family, police said.

"I believe she made all the right choices," Yeagley said. "She's the true hero in this."

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the 13 year old kid that hid her, and guarded the bathroom door armed with a knife, was the true hero here.
She falls more under the hapless victim category.

Police say Eric Ramsey, 30, of Mt. Pleasant went on a rampage Wednesday. He kidnapped and raped a college student, set a house on fire, stole a truck and fled before being shot dead by authorities.

At least the story ended well.

Man, when someone in this town goes on a "crazy" bender, they sure do it right.

Just in the last 6 months in Mt.Pleasant:

1) Abuse and then kill a little kid, then chop, burn and bury the body under the porch. Hide truth, create amber alert and week-long manhunt, go on Nancy Grace.
2) sneak in neighbors house (Halloween), knock her out, zip tie her, choke her to death, have sex with body. Dump body in woods, hide her car and then TAKE HER SON TO SCHOOL FOR HER! BONUS: He was a creepy old preacher that had fantasized about necrophilia with her
3) This hot mess

/I need to get my family out of this state

This.

i don't agree. she saved a life (her own) by jumping out of a moving car after being beaten and raped. further, her escape allowed her to notify police of the crime spree which expedited police to find him. had she not had the courage to jump from a moving vehicle, the police would not have been notified till much later, and she would probably be dead, and the guy might still be on the spree to get someone else.

Thank you. A hero is a person who risks her own life to better a situation. Jumping out of a car is one thing, but knowing that car could simply brake and you would be shot 5 seconds later is another. 14 year old was also a hero but don't think the girl was not.

Yes, and she had the wherewithal to keep it together long enough to get help, call 911, and provide information to the police, all this after being suddenly kidnapped at gunpoint, raped, told your going to get killed, escaping, finding your only help is a tweener, and then having your potential murdered practically kicking the door in. I'd say she was pretty freaking awesome.

How about we keep those who committed violent crimes in prison? Quit giving guys like this parole.

Count me as seeing both as heroic.

vodka: Why did the woman get in the car with him? Isn't the general advice to RUN if accosted in this way?

I mean even with a gun you're not going to improve the situation by being alone with the criminal.

it's a tough call. i know people how have been carjacked at gun point. told to drive the criminal somewhere, and then they just got beat up. there are other people who have denied a gun wielding criminal and gotten shot and killed. there aren't really any correct decisions (or at least, any why of knowing which decision is correct before the fact), there's just the lucky decision.

Then you would need to make space by letting out the ones who are in there for non-violent drug possession... and we can't have that. Are you trying to destroy the jobs of the hard working private prison guards?

I would call that a calculated risk. She was pretty sure staying with the car was going to get her killed. Whereas, jumping from the car, while certainly guaranteeing an injury, may increase her chances of survival.
I seriously doubt she was thinking about stopping this guy before he committed any violent acts upon anyone else. She was trying to save her own ass. I'm not saying this was a bad thing, I'd be in the same mindset.
Saving your own skin is not heroic, it's a built-in instinct. Risking your life trying to save someone else's ass is heroic.

You can't just life sentence every violent offender. Where would we keep the small-time weed dealers?

suicide by cop. when shiat hits the fan, and there's no way out, do you try to escape, or do you try to go out in a blaze of psycho glory?

No that was self preservation. Heroics is different.

At least the bastard got what was coming to him in the end.

I think I have to agree. Hopefully the asshat that did all this got shot right in the face.
