I'm a New Englander through and through, and will defend my region against any other place on Earth....that said, Dunkin Donuts sucks. Their coffee isn't so much coffee-flavored water as it is water-flavored coffee, their donuts are never ever ever as good as they look on the racks, and every single Dunkies around (and there are millions) has a palpable aura of despair hanging over the place. The hash browns are pretty damn good, though.

Drunkin' Grownups coffee used to be so much better.  The quality has slipped, but it is still better than Starbucks, who just use burnt toast scrapings rather than beans.
I like their donuts better than Krusty Kreme, I can't understand why anyone would pay money for DD's bagels.

This is so unnecessary. SoCal is already well served by Winchell's. The market that really needs some donuttin' is the Bay Area.

That said, it would be nice not to have to go so far for a fall pilgrimage to get a most excellent pumpkin donut. Mmm,

They just opened a Dunkin a few blocks from my house. Friggin awesome.

Really? We need this chain like we needed Krispy Kreme in Southern California?

The independent donut shops are way better than this stuff.

Coffee is a whole different argument.

Bye.

It could be worse. It could be Starbucks. How can a coffee shop sell such terrible bagels?

I'm a NJ guy, and all we had was Dunkin Donuts.

You can't really compare DD to KK because the recipes are very different.  KK's fresh from the oven are
quite possibly the template that God used when he modelled the biochemistry of the orgasm, they are
THAT good, but after they cool down, while still yummy they get a bit grainy and not as good.

DD, OTOH, are not quite as yummy (though that should not imply that they are not yummy) when fresh,
but they have a better shelf life:  I've had day-old DDs (don't judge me) that were just as good.  Some
cynics might take that as a bad thing, but that's, like, their opinion man.

I have no opinion on DD's coffee, though I do think overall they are way better than almost any other
national chain (except for White Castle), and I absolutely adore the Dunkacino.

I too am from New England, and I would rather give my business to independent donut shops. Dunkin can fark themselves. Even Honey Dew is better.

i long for the DD of yesteryear: a long copunter of single seats with fat bastards merrily munching on donuts while sipping it black and puffing cigarettes.

DD fell into the dooshbaggery of greed and now offers a diner sized menu of ratty breakfast fare not worthy of purchase. those wanting to duck in for the speedy purchase of a donut & coffee are forced to wait while other assholes questionable breakfast meal is microprepared.

the biggest offense of DD is the noticeable absence of the original plain dunking donut with the handle on it. and their once enjoyable cruller/donut is now a 'jelly stick' of despair. screw you, DD.

Not a CSB: in the mid 1970's while visiting the DD on Rt23 around Verona NJ i saw a fat bastard so fat (how fat was he?) He was so fat his buttocks rested upon TWO bolted to the counter chairs, with butt floppage on both stools. Un-farking-belivable.

/ 'jelly stick' of despair! i crack me up

It only matters if the DD they open out here are owned and operated by Indians. If you walk into a DD and it's run by any other nationality just walk out.

Former New Englander, you just got a bad DD
Head south and check out Krispy Kreme gut bombs. The raspberry filled are OK but the others are nothing but a glob of sugar covered bread dough. Every time I get north, I have to stop at a DD

I don't get why the east coast is so big on DD. There are a few local stores that make much better doughnuts and actually add flavor to the dough and fry them correctly.

Having traveled a lot lately, Dunkin Donuts is mediocre, Winchell's has a fight on their hands though, because of marketing.

Or, it's relatively quick, cheap and they are absolutely EVERYWHERE. Not everybody wants to go out of their way to get a better donut. Sometimes they just want what's close by and easy. It's more about convenience, not quality. If you have a better donut shop near you, great, not everybody has that option nor cares.

As a transplant, I don't agree with a lot of New Englander ways and I find a bunch of New Englanders to just be entitled assholes (I'm looking at you, Massachusetts).

I will say, however, that I like Dunks. It's not the greatest but it's better than Starbucks. The only thing that I don't get is the insane amount of Dunkin' Donuts in each town. There are three in my town and about six in the town north of me. I don't even think there are six Dunks in Ohio.

I will say one thing about Dunkin' D's: Try to find ONE workplace in New England without any DD's cup or wrappers in the trash. They are ubiquitous around here! I pass by three alone on my way to work (15 miles one way).

Yes, they may not be the best donuts, but if you show up with a dozen people will be happy.

I've said it before and I'll say it again in donut threads - if you're in LA, go to Spudnuts at Venice/Sawtelle. It's a little mom and pop place run by an immigrant couple. Standard selection of delicious donuts, and at 75 cents to $1.50 for big things like bear claws and fritters, much more reasonable than whatever the gourmet donut shop du jour is charging.

I predict this will be just like Krispy Kreme: the shops will be very popular at first, after which people will return to getting coffee at Starbucks and their donuts from their local Southeast Asian-run donut shop.

I live in SoCal and when I read this headline, I was like, "What? I know I've been to a DD at some point in the past here. And they're telling me that they are just now opening stores here? BS."

But then I see in the article they say "The Canton, Mass.-based company had a few Dunkin' Donuts shops in California years ago"

OK. I am placated. And old.
I'm OK with this. Anywhere but Krispy Kreme. Bleh.

Krispy Kreme donuts suck when not hot, which is pretty much always. Also, health-consious Californians really aren't going to take up eating fully glazed donuts on a regular basis. At least Dunkin's donuts are decent donuts.

Dunkin used to be good around here until they went with the "one donut shop supplies all the smaller shops around it" model. Now, instead of two or three donut shops within five miles, selling donuts you could stuff a pillow with, there are fifteen donut shops selling hockey pucks. The donuts at the one where I work could crack a window. Twenty years ago, my sister worked at a DD; she'd take home some leftovers, put them in the freezer, and they'd be fine for a week.

Dunkin Donuts is an empty shell of what it once was and is now merely a fast-food joint.

Winchells and YumYum better watch their ass. Dunkin Donuts isn't the world's best fried dough product, but their basic products are lightyears ahead of those franchises.

I won't agree with that (except the hashbrowns comment, they are awesome). I can't drink coffee at home, get one from a gas station, or anywhere else. Whatever crack DD puts in their cream, it is outstanding.

I live in Eugene. We have a Voodoo Doughnut in town, but their doughnuts aren't great. They're novel, but the actual doughnut is pretty ho-hum, and at a premium rate that's cash only, no thanks.

The only other places in town aren't much to talk about, either, although they do have gluten-free and vegan doughnut places here (because Eugene).

I'd kill for a Dunkin Donuts here. Especially because I can't seem to find whole-bean DD coffee anywhere.
