While I enjoy the Steampunk aesthetic, it would have been nice if TFA had shown more working gadgets. It seems like most cons, where 95% are just walking around in brass goggles and a leather vest with a set of tanker boots. The one that really got me was the Megabyte toy dog that someone had just glossed with black paint and changed the ears to telephone bells >:(. Thankfully some of the good ones I had seen on hackaday before and have even sold a couple of pieces at bent festivals to folks that would have come home with me if it weren't for the sp look to them. Nice folks, lotsa money (the ones that I met) and like most other cons- a reason for girls to show off their corseted racks. Maybe have to really up my production of sp based NAND synths on tindie in Q2 lol.

Steampunk is stupid because the very premise of it makes absolutely no sense. You're not going to make a farking microcircuit out of brass, polished wood and patent leather. The very technologies that make the modern world possible are exactly the same ones the ones in steampunk obsolete and rediculous.

Sick to death of that.

Already there. Steampunk had some neat ideas originally but some time about ten years ago gave up on being anything but the theme park version of 19th century fashion with a bunch of gears glued to it.

Also denying it. I am not now nor have I ever been "Goth". Though there are quite a few Goth Steampunks. Actually, a friend of mine does a seminar panel on the subject of steampunk being a "super-culture", accepting and drawing ideas from other subcultures such as Goth, Cyberpunk, etc.

I don't have a lot of brown in my steampunk attire. Unless you count my gold brocade waistcoat. Mostly black, red and grey, with some yellow accents. Steampunk is what you make of it.

I've been Goth all of my adult life (I'm 31) and I have never felt the urge to wear cogs, goggles, or brown and have never seen any fellow Goths jump into that. I am sure there are a few crossovers, but certainly not enough to justify that meme.

I can't see Goth going mainstream and I am one! It will probably be the same it was with "Goth going mainstream", where a few female actresses wore a long black flowing dress on the red carpet to the Oscars/Emmys and wore NOTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE CONSTRUED AS GOTH! For Steampunk to "go mainstream", it will probably be a brown dress and maybe a waist chain held on the dress by a cog shaped pin, for the actresses.

not5am: he was playing it wrong. that game allowed almost any combination as long as you put in the time. it also kept track of reputations, which is probably why he couldn't ride trains anymore.

While it allowed for any combination, a mixture of magic/tech usually resulted in failure (which the documentation went into great detail explaining why, but basically tech worked with nature and magic worked against nature). Spells would fail, guns would jam, etc..

Also, it wasn't his reputation that wouldn't let him on the train as much as his magical aptitude I was assuming. I was a good magic user one build and they wouldn't let me on the train because I was too powerful (too high of a magic aptitude score)

I still have the game, and the documentation for it. Its a good read, lots of background information about the different races, the nature of magic vs tech, etc...

That was a wonderful conspiracy. The gnome aristocrats needed loyal bodyguards, and half-ogres were rare in the wild. So, they bred them (by kidnapping prostitutes and homeless women of course). Of course, by the time you get to the "factory" there is nothing there but a cigarette smoking gnome telling you to stop looking for answers.

/also, a large orgy in celebration for returning the Goddess of Beauty's statue back to the temple.

Because all that involves killing things and blowing shiat up. You know, being as manly as possible so that people never question whether or not you're macho. Steampunk is, supposed to, involve intelligence with a touch of grace and class. That shiat is for pussies. So they need to be made fun of to remind people how manly you are because you refuse to allow such a non-manly thing to exist.

The hipsters haven't fled steampunk yet, so it's tough to tell what will be next. My guess, though, is a more generalized form of anachronism. Dieselpunk will be part of that, though it won't be as all-consuming as steampunk was. Steampunk will remain in a reduced role (and considered a "newbie thing"), and cyberpunk and rennie-Goth will also enjoy something of a comeback, but no one time period will dominate among these four. Other time periods like sandalpunk will be tried, but they won't catch on. Regardless, the fashions will remain generally European in nature, and this will cause some grumbling, but the people who try to buck that trend will cause even more grumbling.

Doctor Who cosplayers will also be welcomed and celebrated as an important part of the trend.

Emo doesn't have much to recommend it, and plenty of arguments against. But in comparison to the Goths who came before (anachronistic or Mansonite, take your pick) or the steampunk crowd that seems to be following after, it does have one thing: it is not nearly as stuff-heavy or materialistic. No one gets out of emo because they don't have the money to keep up.

fark the haters. I'm too old for anime, or gaming fandom, and I'm not that into sci-fi anymore. Steampunk, otoh seems to appeal to a broad spectrum of people. From teens, to old fogies like me. We can dress up, and build little crafty gadget, all in the name of fun. I've actually gotten quite into crafting, combining my fondness for Victorian adventure, and the Lovecraft mythos. Even made a bit of money selling stuff.

Not sure about it going mainstream though. It might be nice to be able to wear my outfit outside of our one steampunk convention here in town. But at the same time, I'm not that keen on the mass-produced plastic nonsense its bound to lead to.

Steampunk always makes me think of the Neo-Victorians in Diamond Age, and the alternate history in The Difference Engine.
Kind of a wierd intersection between the two.

Steampunk will never be mainstream fashion. Americans shop at WalMart and Target because you can buy a $3.99 pack of a dozen socks.

It'll be there for cons, faires, concerts, parties, and the occasional wedding, but don't expect to see folks wearing it to work, or even a night on the town.

tom baker's scarf: i liked the steam punk ascetic a lot more a few years ago and even then more for the redesign of objects more than clothing. now it seems to be a competition to see who can glue the most random crap on to their clothes or person. some of those people looked more like first generation borgs than anything else.

People who do things without imagination or effort will always exist, but it doesn't change the fact that the nature of Steampunk allows for some very cool craftsmanship and interesting designs.

My 15 yr old daughter built really amazing expanding wings last year from her own design. It was a great experience for her and really a wonderful costume in the end.

I'd love to post a pic of it, but I know how Fark goes...

Maybe in sense of "doesn't raise eyebrows on Halloween anymore" and/or "gets their own faires/conventions".

But you're not going to see electronics double and triple their weight (and price) to add actual wood and metalwork.
