Am I the only person who thinks this whole story is still really fishy at best, and if true that Deadspin had no right in what was almost certainly outing a gay man to his family?

He went on television telling the world about his oh-so-poignant dead girlfriend.  At that point his story was something anyone could freely fact-check, and unfortunately for him, Deadspin did.

It's not "outing," they didn't come forward with pictures of him making out with a man or something. They investigated and reported on a story. People can come to their own conclusions regarding his sexual preferences if they so choose.

I have no sympathy, he's the one responsible for making this a public story. You put lies in the public eye and you get burned, it's your own fault.

I'm over Te'o, I'm now at the point where watching the big league sports journalist squirm and try to defend their shiatty research from their Te'o puff pieces last year is more enjoyable.

The whole lie came tumbling down when a Farker did a google search on this broad's name. Great work ESPN/Sports Illustrated/etc. No time to fact check, just keep the circle jerk going.

To add to the imaginary fun, section 115 will be blocked and reserved only for fans to sit with their imaginary friends, girlfriends/boyfriends or spouses. There will also be a make pretend kiss cam, air guitar contest and an imaginary food fight outside the Airheads Kids Zone.

Now thats funny.

They had every right to do whatever it was they did.  If this guy was totally an unwitting pawn or something, then that's a shame.

I couldn't care less whether the poor kid is gay, straight, or into fish dicks. I can't stop following this story, though, because it's so goddamn bizarre. I feel bad, like I'm reading National Enquirer, but... it's so goddamn weird that I can't stop.

This is just about all they talked about on ESPN radio today and it was the first I'd heard of it. They were screaming bloody murder. I just kept waiting and waiting to hear why it was a news story. I figured he must have scammed thousands and thousands of dollars or something. Nope. Some dude made up a girlfriend.... and then nothing.

If Manti Te'o and Lance Armstrong could get together at a bar someplace, just by themselves with no one around, I think they would grin broadly and high-five each other. Repeatedly.

"Who fooled 'em the best?"

"You did!"

"No, man, YOU did!"

The man was an above-average football player on an above-average team who used the fake death of his fake girlfriend DELIBERATELY TIMED TO COINCIDE WITH THE ACTUAL DEATH OF HIS GRANDMOTHER for endless media and campus attention. His team went to the NCG and he almost won the Heisman because of it.

It's disgusting. He exploited people's sympathy to further his image by lying to them

If he was really hoaxed by an evil bastard, he is one of the most naive people that has ever lived. I know I wouldn't spend a year falling in love with a girl I met online without at least trying to Skype or Facetime with her, let alone meeting her in person. And I certainly wouldn't consider her my girlfriend if we had never met in person.

So he's no longer an above average football player who played on an above average team?? If he nearly won an award for having loved ones die in a short period of time... well, I never checked but I probably almost won some award too. As far as all this controversy goes, I'd be hard pressed to come up with 3 things I cared less about.

Deadspin seemed to be operating on the theory that he probably made up the story as part of his Heisman campaign. There's nothing in their story that suggests that it might have been him and the other guy creating the girlfriend as a way to stay in the closet. I doubt Deadspin thought that running the story would be outing him as anything other than a guy who made up a girlfriend to create a Heisman campaign sob story.

And besides, the idea that he's gay is still just wild theorizing on the Internet with zero evidence.

Probably. From other reports, he wasn't exactly a monk on campus and had his share of girls during his time at Notre Dame.

He prevaricates quite a bit for someone so religious. "Closeted" is probably a better adjective.

Serious question:

Did he make one cent off his "girlfriend"?

Were there any Federal, State, or Municipal resources expended due to this "girlfriend"?

No? Then this horse is ready for the glue factory.

Does "being sympathetic" have something to do with winning the Heisman? I thought it was a performance based award.
Didn't the team go so far because they actually won games? It's not like the other teams let him win, because they felt bad for him, right?

2013-01-18 08:09:15 AM
To me, it's not really about him. What makes it a story is the enthusiastic complicity of so many major media outlets. Places people go to for information that they rely on. It's sickening that they participated in this, and disgusting how stupid they assume the public is in their cover up/face saving attempts after the fact.

I thought his dad was in on the hoax, because he wanted to cover up his son's gayness? I doubt they "outed" Manti to anyone inside his family and/or close friends.

ND fans set up a website to accept donations for the LLS on behalf of the girlfriend.

"The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society was unaware of this effort to raise funds on our behalf," spokeswoman Andrea Greif wrote in a statement. "LLS does not accept any funds raised through fraudulent means. We will investigate and return any funds donated to us through this effort."

He also said he found out about the hoax on Dec 6th, but on Dec 8th during the heisman ceremony, he gave a nice speech about doing everything in honor of his dead girlfriend. He didn't get hoaxed.

"Player narrative" plays a big role in the voting, especially when schools spend millions pushing their candidates.
Even more interesting is the fact that ESPN knew she was non-existent in late December, yet they continued the narrative through the championship game.

Man, if I had this many dudes on the internet rooting for me to be gay, I might be flattered.

The whole gay football player meme is pretty interesting. I was a virgin till almost age 20, so of course I lied about having a couple of girlfriends. Doesn't mean I was getting ass-pounded, just meant I had social skills barely above someone who had been raised by wolves.
