It looks like it was designed by the same guy who did the graphic design for Rmoney's presidential campaign.

I know, let's get three different reds, three different white/grays, three different blues... but wait we'll make those gradients, see. Then we arrange them totally arbitrarily in a flagish pattern. We'll maximize our target value for terrorists AND look like our head of corporate design is a first year graphics design student. GENIUS

This is a huge sign that there will be no merger with US Airways.

Carriers update thier livery after a merger, not before.

Yeah, but the font Delta uses returning your search results (MIA -> PDX... Please wait) is the same font they print on your boarding pass... I always look at that and feel like it's the extra mile American never went.

It's not looking good for US Air. They need the merger more than American does, and now that American has its house in order as far as costs go, they even posted a profit last quarter. I'm not ready to say "book it, done", but I predict that AA will come out of BK an independent entity, and they will be the ones acquiring US Scare later on down the road.

I won't even get into what a mess trying to merge East/West and a new South (AA) it would be if US was the buyer. They're still working that stuff out 7 years after the America West/US merger.

I don't think it is a good idea for them to be painting their whole aircraft.  Their current paint scheme (or lack there-of) actually reduces the weight of the aircraft which saves them money in fuel expense.

They've got a bunch of Airbii on order, shiny carbon fiber doesn't look as good. I'll miss the bare metal as well, but that's the future of aircraft I'm told.

I like the logo itself, but the livery scheme on the vert. stabilizer is way too plain.  It needs some depth and shading, like that seen on a BA plane.

Oh, and by my count, they don't even have 13 distinct stripes on that.

I miss what air travel used to be like for everyone who could afford to fly. It was once a classy experience. It is really messed up that a handful of assholes have ruined one of modern civilizations cooler innovations.

Graphic designer here. Yup, I don't like it. Looks like a logo for cheap shampoo. There's nothing iconic about it. It just looks...dinky. Not to mention that it doesn't flow well when applied to the livery. You'd think a tail-shaped logo would be on the tail, but nope. And putting the text inside the window line(or whatever its called) makes it look like a discount airline. Text on airlines always looks better above the window line, as shown in the retro liveries others have posted.

Really, the best stuff for airline livery comes from the 30s to the mid 60s, because that was the last time anyone thought flying in an airline was awesome. And of course, the work of Saul Bass, who, even though his work is obviously of its time, is still the king of effective minimalism.

Looking at it in higher def...*facepalm* Ok, trying to find the concept here. There's obviously some kind of eagle head shape in the grey gradient, but...is the red and blue parts supposed to be its wings? Or the tail-section of a plane? Or both? Because it's incredibly awkward at portraying each of those. Even funnier, if you look at the grey gradient part, it looks like the red gradient part is paper that is peeling back. The fark does peeling paper have to do with airlines?

This is just a mess of gradients. If I were the design director, I'd toss this design out.

And, US Airways is one of the worst things about living in Philadelphia. American's no Southwest, but it's better than that.

I've been told (by people w/30+ years in the airline industry) that all aircraft have to be painted, stem to stern, in order to avoid rust and reduce drag. American supposedly uses a clear paint (varnish? shelack?) that is actually heavier and more expensive than normal paint. Most planes are white with colour flourishes on the tail because white paint is cheapest.

AA did not paint their planes, per se.  A thin coat of what I would call a "sealer" was applied to help protect the finish, but otherwise, the aluminum skin was just buffed/shined.  From what I heard on a Boeing factory tour, not applying any paint saved AA a few hundred pounds minimum per plane - even more on the dual-aisle ones.
