According to a Mauritanian news source, the Algerians attacked the hostage site with helicopters. Does this mean the hostages were killed in the crossfire, or were they executed as retaliation for the attack?

The only combat helicopters in the Algerian Air Force are Mi-24s. Looks like HINDsight is not 20-20.

Killface: Why does it say welcome to you are doom? What does that even mean? And why for god sake is doom in quotes?
Valerie: I don't know.
Killface: Is it some sort of ironic doom? Is the wink implied?

We better not take news sources too seriously, they often get it wrong.

We should wait till we hear information from the US State Dept.

They will know what is going on....

Algeria is not sub-Saharan but they share a huge, and very hard to control border with the terrorist morons in North Mali.

Ah, thanks! My map is at school. I thought Mali was central-west? WIth no coastline? I may be wrong...

Very sad.

Pff, it's only because the hostages kept running into walls and doorframes during the rescue. I heard four of them got stuck in a hallway filled with office chairs.

There was no ending to this scenario, short of a hail of near-magic bullets to take out all the militants before they could start killing hostages, that had a good outcome for the poor saps on that convoy.

This is what Special Forces Operational Detachment - Delta and their frogfooted cousins DEVGRU do, bro. Only it's not magic, just thousands of hours of training and precision equipment.

Ranbow Six is looking more and more prescient. Too bad Algeria decided to go "Leeeerooooy Jeeeenkiiins" (at least according to the article).

So pointing out that the deaths were the responsibility of the Algeria military's overzealous pursuit of the hostage takers, does that make it more like Waco? or can we stop the silliness and declare you a troll and move on to passing along condolences to the families of the hostages?

Actually, this is most likely the start of a large world involvement in the region since this all stems from the Libyan civil war. African Merc forces hired by Qadaffi left Libya at the end of the war and upon returning home joined militant groups in Mali and Algeria. Currently, Mali is under a civil war with French involvement, and Algeria is target of militants because of their oil supply. Basically, we'll be in North Africa in a matter of weeks. Which means we can all make lots of Casablanca jokes.
