National sovereignty is still a thing, terrorists or no. It sucks that good guys have to follow rules while bad guys get to improvise - the burden of being right, as it were.

// alternatively, we could sneak in and kill everyone (except hostages)
// where's SEAL Team 6?

No, I completely agree. It's very reassuring to see this administration's reluctance toward unilateral military action.

Al Jazeera is reporting the TOTAL number of hostages killed: 35 (keep in mind most of the hostages were Algerian); the U.S. media is reporting the number of FOREIGN hostages killed: 6

So these reports may not be inconsistent at all, just disagreeing over whether or not dead locals actually count as people.

FTA: Thirty-four hostages and 15 kidnappers have been killed in southern Algeria, according to the group holding the hostages.
...
The official Algerian APS news agency, citing local sources, said an unspecified number of people were killed in the military rescue attempt.
It said nearly 600 Algerian workers and four foreign hostages - two Britain, two Britons, a Frenchman and a Kenyan - had been freed during the operation.

...
Algerian media, citing officials, reported that 15 foreigners and 30 Algerians had managed to escape.
-

Well? What the hell are the real numbers? 604 freed or 45 escaped?
That's some great reporting.

I'm not talking about the Denis Allex affair in Somalia. Buzz on the French interwebs is that the Malian operation hasn't been as successful either.  But agreed, I should not have used the word 'rescue' despite the fact that it's a clear mission to protect their gas interests in Algeria by intervening in Mali. Algeria is one of the leading suppliers of natural gas to Europe and they cannot afford for anyone to disrupt that.

Given that as the criterion for a "scandal," I'm sure the wharrgarbl for this incident will be in place by the time the evening news comes on.
