Remove the spaces that Fark put in it. The account was created on 16 Jan and then retweeted old tweets to appear to have a history. Thus the controller of this account may not be the controller of the old fake account.

Most of your other points are valid, I would agree. I would probably join you in making fun of ND for much of their backward thinking if we were having a beer together. (Although, the Catholics are one of the mainstream Christian religions that has finally come on-board with evolution, by Papal decree - so, again, like with this rule for the LGBT group, they're not all bad. Most of the other mainstream Christian religions still can't understand the difference between evolution and abiogenesis, or what the 2nd-Law means, or that you don't use Carbon-14 dating to date rocks (heard this one in person, from someone with an advanced science degree from a California university, no less - But, let's keep those stereotypes going about us conservative Texans!)). That is why I just singled out this one point. Their policy, itself, was not unfair.

While I don't have a copy, and I got this from a third party, I believe it to be from the ND student code of conduct handbook: regarding sex - "genuine and complete expression of love" that requires "a commitment to a total living and sharing together of two persons in marriage." Those found in violation of this policy could be subject to suspension or permanent dismissal.

You don't even have to be involved in an on-campus group for this rule to apply to you, just a student, in general.

So, yes. They are not holding the LGBT group to any higher standard than the general population. This fact is lost in just about every article that pops up about the ND LGBT group you mentioned. When people are so emotionally attached to a cause, they often overlook logic. Everyone knows that ND is "anti-gay", so any policy they have for gays must be "unfair"! But, not the case.

BYU has similar "morality" codes for its general population, as well.

Now, I am sure that the rule would be enforced unfairly, but that is a different discussion, entirely. Sodomy laws come to mind.

Take care.

I'm not sure I believe the "he's gay" angle.

It's possible, but, as others have pointed out, it would be much easier to have his pick of hotties who would date him while maintaining his moral code.

It's way easier to believe he got scammed, realized it at an early point, then kept the lie going because of all the pub, pressure from ND, and all the sympathy he could reap come awards time.

I think your scenario is the most likely, however it's not a popular theory because it doesn't make him look like a total idiot or a total scumbag. I still think it's an absolute joke that he won any award over Jarvis Jones

Their stares got pleasantly tangled, then Manti Te'o extended his hand to the stranger with a warm smile and soulful eyes. They could have just as easily brushed past each other and into separate sunsets.

Lennay Kekua was a Stanford student and Cardinal football fan when the two exchanged glances, handshakes and phone numbers that fateful weekend three seasons ago.

"They started out as just friends," Brian Te'o said. "Every once in a while, she would travel to Hawaii, and that happened to be the time Manti was home, so he would meet with her there. But within the last year, they became a couple.

"...LGBT students means never having any kind of sexual or even romantic contact with someone they're attracted to..."

Well, I guess if you said that the two LGBTers wanted to get married while one or both of them were still enrolled at ND, then we would have a problem, and in that regard, there would be a problem with equality of the rule as Indiana doesn't allow gay marriage, I don't believe, nor would ND recognize the marriage as legitimate even if Indiana did, and even if it did acknowledge the marriage, it would not acknowledge the sex. So, for a LGBT student wishing to get married and have the gay hole-filling sex like but unlike the other married heterosexual ND students, we do have a serious discrepancy.

But, for the average student, and as a general policy, they DO promote chastity for the entire student population. The fact that it would be enforced differently I take as a given, and a separate and valid injustice. Again, I'm no ND apologist.

But, you do bring up a good point. There could be some heterosexual ND students that are married, and get to have sexish behaviors under the condoning eye of the college. Nasty. And, then you could have a LGBTer that WANTED to get married but weren't allowed and have some sex that is not allowed. So, from this standpoint, for this fringe venn-subset of the ND population, the promotion of chastity would be unfair as the policy would condone the sexual acts of one student while still punishing the other.

Of course, none of these rules apply after graduation. They don't revoke your diploma. So, you have to promote chastity, like all the other students do, while you're at the campus. Your take on "never" and mine don't mesh. They may have to tounge-in cheek promote the concept for four years, but no longer than that.

And, if you say that they shouldn't have to promote something they don't believe in, well...I guess. But, there are other colleges. And, do you believe that the other 30,000 (just a population guess, don't kill me over that one...) heterosexual students actually believe in the chastity program as depicted by an earlier poster? Or, do you think they sign their code with their fingers crossed, as well? If the LGBTers shouldn't have to promote it, neither should the heteros. If the heteros should not have to either, then we are talking about ND right to even HAVE a code of conduct policy. They are a private school, so I think they get to do that. Even if I or some of their students want to go there, but don't like the policy.

But, for the majority of the population, we're picking nits. No sex until marriage. And, even then, only certain kinds. Thems the rules, man, for EVERYONE.

I will flat out admit that in the venn-diagram mentioned above, the college is clearly still on the wrong side of things, but I will still argue that simply crying that the LGBT have to adhere to a sexual chastity code that the heteros also have to adhere to is discriminatory is, well, at least a little bit disingenuous.

We started off talking about chastity...but that quickly morphs in the the right to "marry" and "sodomy"...and NDs leg it's standing on gets wobbly.

I am going to pull my rip cord on that one and parachute out of this discussion for that reason.

Take care.

I don't get why people think this makes him gay. Why wouldn't he just get a beard? More likely this whole thing started small, got out of hand and he didn't know how to get out of it, so he 'killed' her off.  Weird.

2013-01-17 05:00:26 PM
Manti Teo doesn't masturbate. He merely strokes the back of his girlfriend's head.

2013-01-17 05:05:44 PM
I don't think it makes him gay, but it's one logical explanation and it serves a purpose, that purpose being self-preservation.

We don't know just yet, as this story will continue to evolve.

Maybe the bigger story (aside from the rape scandal, which I have now posted about three times) is how that it took the sports media over five months to break it and how ESPN is almost to the point where they are to sports what MTV is to music.

2013-01-17 05:11:13 PM
I like that the immediate assumption is that he's gay. I thought the hype for this kid was a joke, but my God this is getting weird.

I guess Manti Te'o has been chosen for harvest this year.

Ow! That was my feelings!: I don't get why people think this makes him gay. Why wouldn't he just get a beard? More likely this whole thing started small, got out of hand and he didn't know how to get out of it, so he 'killed' her off.  Weird.

His being gay seemed like a reasonable explanation to an unreasonable set of facts (at least, at first). But the more I think about it, the less sense it seems to make. For instance, he could have found a nice, observant Mormon girl who adhered strictly to chastity before marriage, and she needn't even know, thus eliminating the risks from having a beard who might out him as well as questions about the lack of sex. (Of course, he may simply be too nice a guy to deceive a girl like that.)

But frankly, nothing about this story makes much sense, and the more details that come out, the less sense it makes. For example, none of the proposed explanations account for the fact that his imaginary dead girlfriend later developed an imaginary sister. How does that help anything in any of these scenarios?

Maybe Ronaiah Tuiasosopo had a desperate need to be close to college football stars, so he used a female proxy? Maybe he was jealous of Te'o and his football career, and this whole thing was set up to humiliate him? Beats me; but the more details we learn, the more the glib "he's gay" explanation seems to lose its appeal.

I thought the gay thing was just one of the many theories rather than an immediate assumption.

2013-01-17 05:19:26 PM
What this story demonstrates above all is the total gullibility of the media. Whether it be sport, politics, business, economics, or entertainment reporters these days DO NOT investigate or question the source. They simply parrot whatever they are told.

The guy was a jock, the big man on campus. Co-eds were throwing themselves at his feet yet he was content with a girlfriend whom he never met in the flesh. What jock do you know who is satisfied with an online relationship under those circumstances? I'm leaning towards a very closeted Mormon at a homophobic Catholic college. Its a double whammy and he won't come clean today or ever.

So how does he play this:

1-I'm dumber than dead dog shiat.
2-I'm a really bad liar.
3-I'm a delusional loser.
4-I'm desperate gay man.
5-I like cashews.

I have an entirely new theory. Are you ready for it? This is mind blowing. Manti Te'o and the guy who ran the fake girlfriend internet image were gay lovers. To stop people from asking about his lack of a girlfriend at college, they set up the fake person. Then when it started to get noticed, and people started getting interested in her, they had to kill her off. It just got out of hand.

The teammate portrayed the move as part of the All-American's personality, telling ESPN that Te'o liked attention so much that he would sometimes point himself out to friends when he was on television.

I think that if Te'o was involved (and it would be quite an upset if he wasn't), this may put "being an attention whore" has a slight favorite over "hiding his sexuality" in the motive for this hoax.
