Are there really people out there who feel like Gremlins is this wonderful piece of cinema that shouldn't be tainted by a remake? We're not exactly talking about Casablanca here.

After the ET guns/radios debacle, I think Steve learned his lesson.

The reboot is believed to have been held back by the amount of money Spielberg has been asking for the rights, and his demands to be involved in any Gremlins project.

Less than nothing to see here.

I came here to say this basically. It's a great movie, and a pretty good sequel, and I enjoyed it immensely...but...yeah.

Hahahahaha, not no it isn't. But soon we'll make a terrible remake. And it will be stupid, overly PC, and all around awful.
Be afraid, be very afraid.

From- Hollywood.

Hopefully if Spielberg gives up the rights and/or stays involved, one of his demands is that Gizmo is animatronic.

Given what Rule 34 does to childhood memories I think Hollywood is a bit late to the game.

It's not that difficult. Use puppets, with as little CGI as possible (erase the wires, etc..). Bring back Spielberg to produce and Joe Dante directing. It really isn't that difficult.

"I really liked Frank Oz and puppet Yoda; it was masterful how he turned a puppet into an primary character, whose monologs and mannerisms are as iconic as any human. I just wish he had looked a lot faker--shinier, if you will--and that we'd gotten a chance to see him flip around with his "little laser sword"."

Using puppets would increase the cost by almost 6% and make it nearly impossible for the asian Gremlin to use Kung-fu. And you can forget about "bullet-time" fighting.

I just read your comment, after which I punched a blind child and called to cancel my monthly gift to the ASPCA. I hope you're happy.

How does Hollywood completely remaking a movie from your childhood change anything? Does it mean you can't remember being 8 and thinking Gremlins kick ass?

I will admit, I don't get it.

Not yet, you did not give up your Democratic party membership.

Oh for the love of god.

Like the recent Paul Verhoeven remakes, the Gremlins reboot will likely not realize how tongue-in-cheek the Joe Dante directed movies were, which is what made them work (and Gremlins 2 remains way too meta for most people to get).

2013-01-17 10:38:58 AM
Great. A watered down, less scary Gremlins with CGI.

How exciting!

Things I learned from Gremlins.

Never and I mean never in a pitch black room cackle like a Gremlin, go "Yum, yum, yum, yum!" and begin to give your girl friend oral sex, the silly biatch will kick you in the head.

And Stripe isn't an evil gremlin created from water spilled on Gizmo, he's actually Gizmo's misunderstood brother who kept being ignored while Gizmo got all of the love and attention.

Why are we wasting time remaking a movie that does not need remaking!

Black Swan on the other hand... that's due for a remake. In fact, it should be remade every year with two different actresses. I'm thinking Anne Hathaway and Rachel Bilson. Also are there any plans to remake whild things yet?

This past Christmas Eve, my wife and I had a great time watching Die Hard and Gremlins back to back. True holiday classics.

Fun trivia fact: the deputy in Gremlins is Mike from Breaking Bad.

Is it time for the 5th Element remake yet? Hollywood could release it in 3d and use tons of lens flare.

/sigh

Remember how much Gremlins themed crap got sold in the 80's? Hollywood is probably drooling at the potential renewed merchandising revenue generated from this reboot.

I wonder if they'd have the balls to go the original, darker route of the story.

2013-01-17 11:01:06 AM
Why does Hollywood keep doing remakes of 80's movies instead of coming out with those sequels they've been promising us for decades, like "Buckaroo Banzai vs. The World Crime Syndicate"?

Justin Bieber will play Billy who is now an Astronaut. The movies premise will be Gizmo accidentally  gets shot into space aboard Mars Explorer 1.. And boy does Gizmo get into some ZANNY antics riding Curiosity around!

The only way I'll be okay with this is if they release a mogwai robot that can actually walk around the house and engage with at least Furby level language skills.

What, you think that's a silly idea? Think of it as a stepping stone to practical household robots. If we have to make it a movie tie-in then so be it.

2013-01-17 11:18:14 AM
I really don't think someone can screw up Gremlins.  I mean.. Honestly.  It was bad 20 years ago.
Fun. But bad.
That's all it needs.  That, and skip the CGI.  But they can't do that, so whatever.

2013-01-17 11:19:59 AM
Will it be in 3D? Because it should be in 3D.
