What about the budget? Does that even rate now?

It probably does, but this is over the next 4 years. I imagine the fiscal fight is still more of a "lets do this before the inauguration" level

How about raising revenue and cutting spending so we can get into an annual surplus and start paying down our debt?

Oh wait, that's not as controversial as GUNS! Media has stopped caring for now.

If you think 'the media' has stopped talking about deficit reduction, the debt ceiling, etc. then you haven't been paying attention. Just because gun stuff has taken the spotlight doesn't mean there aren't other stories in the news.

The GOP would love to have the President get bogged down in budget debates and artificial crisis every few months, thus keeping the man from accomplishing anything of value in this term.

I don't see that happening, though.

I'm still hoping that he tells the DOJ to completely stand down when it comes to legal marijuana businesses. Probably won't happen though.

The climate change priority really surprises me. I shouldn't be shocked at the ignorance surrounding the issue, but with certain media outlets and monied interests promoting skepticism with no evidence to back it up, it will be hard to have a serious discussion about it.

Obama made massive investments in environmental initiatives through his "green jobs" stimulus spending. Sure, the actual jobs are are hard to quantify but to say climate change wasn't a priority during his first term is ridiculous. He used the economic crisis to forward that agenda.

Green energy is about WAY more than just the climate effects, unless you think Coal and Oil are infinite.

The economic crisis set his agenda back.  He used much of his political capital to just get a weak stimulus package passed and barely had enough to shoe-horn in watered down health care reform and then he had nothing left.

If the economy would have been strong he could have had meaningful health care reform, much more dramatic investment in renewable energy, education, science etc... etc...

He was forced to use his up half his points cleaning up the mess Republicans made.

I'm ok with this!

-The 25 executive orders on guns do nothing. He finally did something right.
-Immigration, well he already gave the middle finger to everyone under 30 by adding 1,600,000 illegal aliens to the work force. Not sure he can screw the young people in this country much more.
-Climate change - I'm sure that he will simply set up lots of funding to line his and Al's pockets for the next couple of decades. Stealing from We The People is what this clown does best.

The size of the stimulus was actually too small, according to most economists. Granted, if you took out all the stupid tax breaks the stimulus was loaded with (Around half of it), and applied that money towards actual stimulus, the size of it would have been less of an issue.

However, he is the guy that, you know, actually spends the money.

Basically everything labeled "discretionary" he can just decide not to actually buy, iirc, since the expenditures aren't explicitly encoded by amount into law. The budget is a budget, it's as possible to go under budget as it is over budget if you want.

//Seriously, if you're going to use your lame-duck power, just cut half the military budget or something. Don't waste the power of fark it on gun control, of all things. We've quite literally done that before, we know that outright bans don't stick. Close the loopholes, take reasonable steps, stay away from AWB-type shiat like it's the carpet and you're an eight-year-old playing the floor is lava.

Well it wasn't $1T.  It was more like $750B I think and it was mostly tax cuts. Arond $300B in actual spending. Real stimulus should be pure spending to spur the economy.  So very weak.  Consider that Canada (1/10th the size/GDP) spent $100B in pure infrastructure spending (no tax cuts) and our recession was nothing compared to yours.   Canada was the first country to bounce out of the recession and will have a balanced budget by 2016 likely.

That would have been like the US spending $1T on infrastructure.  According to economists, $2T was what was really required.  The boost to the GDP would have paid for the Stimulus in a few years. You would have had a projected balanced budget 5 years earlier if you would have had true stimulus in the first year.   Anyways, even that pathetic stimulus took up much of Obama political capital.  He spent the entirety of the balance o health care reform (I think we both agree on that) and it was weak also but still an achievement IMHO.

Biden is a great VP and well used by Obama. He pushed or helped move gay rights to the front of the agenda. He closed the fiscal cliff negotiations. Mitch McConnel calls Joe for help in negotiations, because Joe has earned deep respect on both sides of the aisles.
