Was watching "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" the other night and they had some seafood place that served soft-shelled crab sandwiches. The thing was still moving when the guy dredged it in flour and dropped it in the deep fryer. Now THAT'S fresh.

Of course they feel pain. Or at the very least, some analogous neural stimulation that would prompt them to move away from a potentially harmful thing

I'm not a biologist, but that sounds like bullshiat to me.

Learning to avoid sensations that are associated with something dangerous like electricity just means that it's insect brain can detect it and associate it with danger. It doesn't mean that it hurts.

What a waste of research money. They should be trying to discover what makes them so damn tasty.

Do they also feel melancholy? I would imagine living on the sea-floor would be pretty depressing.

Only when you attack their weak points for massive damage.
As history has shown.

Old Bay is a natural crab opiate. They feel nothing but peppery bliss.

So who is finding a new painless way to kill me a tasty crab, and how much will it cost?

ftfa: Research has also shown naked mole rats may be immune to pain

No, it didn't. It indicated a lack of sensitivity to acid and capsaicin. They evidently still feel pain from things like pinches.

2013-01-17 02:55:55 AM
More and more, the efforts to show that other animals are qualitatively different from humans relies on the increasingly tenuous concept of the "self" or "consciousness". It seems pretty obvious that the data is pointing to that distinction making as much sense as "souled" and un-souled". Now, as to whether such things make it impossible to eat soft-shelled crab I remain an agnostic. A hungry agnostic.

They, umm... taste like chicken?

Well, no, they have a wide variety of tastes and textures that just aren't available in anything that isn't them. Although, I suppose if you boiled potatoes until soft in water seasoned with Old Bay, it would vaguely approximate some small subset of the mild stuff.

Holy shiat. What kind of fish/shellfish are you eating that you could approximate it with boiled potatoes?

On the other hand, maybe you've got magic potatoes. Can't rule that out.

Do you have a better idea for imitation completely non-seafood substances? Enlighten us. Whitefish and east-coast crabs usually don't have a lot of texture, and that's a classic seafood seasoning. Best I can come up with, offhand.

I think I speak for my fellow Marylanders when I say 'Fark crabs girly feelings, they're delicious'. I like to think its the pain that MAKES them delicious. Pain and Old Bay.

/Midly related note, when my aunt lived in Maine, we'd get lobsters and before cooking them, we'd let them loose on the kitchen floor and let her Husky run around scaring the shiatte out of them. I also like to think torture increases the flavor.
//Not that being boiled alive isn't torture.

I never understood the fascination with Old Bay. I tried it a few time, it's alright, but I would never ruin crab with it. Just some butter sauce.
