Sadly I procreated before Fark existed, so I don't qualify, but I can give a ride to whoever you send over - it's about a half-hour or so drive for me.  Great place to hang out late at night while wondering whether life is worth it.  Here's a pic from about 10 weeks ago.

Well, this particular part of the summit caldera has misbehaved a bit in the last few years.  The tourist-friendly, photogenic, slow-oozing, walk-up-and-roast-marshmallows stuff is usually more out along the rift zones.

I visited the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park in October. Pretty cool view at night as the lava lake was high then as well.

Clearly this is a sign that Pele feels threatened by Namakaokaha'i once again. Pele must be appeased, lest she move on to greener (or redder and hotter, as the case may be) pastures. Probably Loihi. As per tradition, someone must throw a bottle of gin into the crater to show her that the people of Hawaii still care.

No, geology. Shield volcanoes don't explode when they errupt. It just dribbles out, relative to shiat like Mt St Helens, a composite volcano, that blows like a bomb.

I visited the big Island and found a local guide to take me out on the lava flow down where it hits the water. Your not supposed to go out there but apparently if you start at 5am and get to the flow at sunrise nobody is around to stop you. I got close enough to lava to poke a stick in it. It was amazing. We walked over lava that had just hardened the day before and I saw beaches that were not there the day before and were in the process of being reclaimed by the ocean. we were there in 2008 just as the volcano started becoming active again.

You may want to re-think that.

From your link: "There have been more powerful eruptions here, but none more deadly," (in the US)

Krakatoa was no shield volcano. Also who fights on a volcano. All 400 of them got what they deserve. It's like the mushroom pickers who pick mushrooms under the giant sign that says "DO NOT PICK MUSHROOMS" and then die.

Article says nothing about tourists. I hope the visitor centre is not right next to the thing. Mother Nature needs a laugh from time to time and I could see the thing unexpectedly, and hilariously puking out molten glop over everyone within screaming distance.

Kilauea is a sacred site, a god, if you will, to the native population. IIRC there is a shaman who lives on the mountain, and communes with Kilauea as needed. When the shaman flees, it is past time to run.

2.bp.blogspot.com

?

The article is about Kilauea, not Krakatoa, which is in Indonesia.

Kilauea is a shield volcano.

The people who died there obviously weren't expecting it to behave this way, just as many scientists over the past century didn't expect that kind of explosive behavior either.

A shaman?  Hmm... while there's certainly plenty of Hawaiian cultural/religious protocol, chants, dances, etc. surrounding Kilauea, none of the native Hawaiians I know have ever mentioned there being someone with that sort of role.  I suppose it's possible - a priest I know used to take care of one of the other (bigger and more sacred) mountains.  On the other hand, if you just want new-agey psychobabble from a crazy-haired person who never got the memo that the '60s were over, the whole Puna district is crawling with 'em.
