At least Friends tried to explain away Monica's apartment as actually her grandmothers rent controlled place she inherited.

Odd that this common trope of broke twenty somethings living in huge apartments in a cool part of NY is the exact opposite of Dallas where a family of oil billionaires lived in one three bedroomed house.

George Jefferson was a successful businessman, owner of multiple dry-cleaning locations, and lived in Manhattan in the 70s. If anything, he could have had a bigger place.
