(The Blaze)   In Obama's gun policy speech, he invoked Saint Reagan, who, it turns out, supported an assault weapon ban. So the conservatives must reluctantly agree, right? Nope, they're now saying he was demented and racist for supporting it   (theblaze.com) divider line 714

What part of "shall not be infringed" is SO hard to understand. And don't try the Militia crap the sups already decided we have the right to keep AND bear arms AND I LOVE IT. I'm going to buy bigger and more powerful guns as soon as my welfare check comes in.

I'm on eBay right now. Waiting to snipe this auction, so I can get my hands on a nuke! Can't wait to 'bear arms' at the next tea party rally!

Reagan was all for gun control to keep the firearms out of the hands of blah people. Reagan was also a terrible President and likely criminally responsible for the treasonous activities of Iran-Contra. So, there's that.

Big deal.  Reagan thought it would work back in 1994.   He turned out to be wrong,  In fact--it did little, if anything to reduce crime.  Or, so said academic studies, the CDC, the National Research Council, etc.  Fact is--so called "assault weapons" represent a sliver of gun crimes in this country.

It's no matter--a new ban will never pass the House.

I'm sure the freepers will note that Reagan was in early onset Alzheimers at the time he supported the AWB during the Clinton presidency.  So their Messiah was already making his way to a higher plane of existence, leaving the zombie husk of Reagan on Earth to sign the tripe.

A Republican House? No. Just wait a congress or two. The do nothing, just say no, obstructionist republicans are sealing their own fate.

You missed his punchline, didn't you?
Anyway, the answer to the "well regulated" bit (according to another Fark thread I read) is that "regulated" meant something entirely different in the late 18th century. I don't know what exactly, but that's the argument I heard.

In this particular context well-regulated is basically a synonym for functional.  People can't seem to get their heads around that.

They're now alleging that Sandy Hook didn't even happen, that it was faked by "crisis actors," because the mere fact that it happened is a challenge to their ideology.

So yeah, of course they're turning on Reagan. At this point they're probably willing to deny that Reagan even existed.

This is really really dumb politically. An assault weapons ban or high cap mag restriction type push from the Dems will hand the house and the presidency back to the republicans for the next decade. This back ground check thing is seriously treading on thin ice. This is probably the dumbest issue they could possibly tackle. I cant believe that the Dems could even be thinking about messing with this hornets nest. Dumb Dumb Dumb!

If the studies were so conclusive to the NRA's benefit, why did they squelch research on the topic in 1996?

Where precisely in the second amendment does it affirm a right to any and all arms? Even presuming an individual right to bear arms (as the Heller decision supports), Americans do not have a constitutional right to all firearms; a fair reading indicates the amendment only precludes a blanket ban on every firearm.

I knew a kid whose uncle was one of Reagan's personal chefs. He would tell his family that near the end of his time in the white house he would order the strangest things. One time I guess he asked him for a 5 tiered wedding cake, for no reason, he just wanted a huge cake. What do you do? Tell him no? You make the facking thing. So yea, he was loony long before 94'.

QFT

There are so much bigger fish to fry. It's frustrating and disappointing to see the Dems use all of their political capital from the election on gun control, which has always been a losing issue that just ends up motivating the GOP base.

Um, close but no.

The 2nd Amendment was added to ensure the southern states that they could keep their slave patrols. These were local plantation owners and other whites that would go around and make sure the slaves weren't getting all uppity with rebellion talk. These patrols were organized and regulated by seasoned military/militia officers.

The only demographic against more firearms restrictions: white, non-college educated men. And, thankfully, their clout is waning. More gun control is the popular position and your protestations are immaterial.

Miller limited weapons based off of "no military purpose" and you have the founders quotes. So ALL weapons no, but ironically an M16 fits more in line with the intentions of the amendment than an over/under shotgun.
