As I Giants fan, I, for one, welcome Mr. Kelly.

I'm sure those payments to "recruiting services" will come in handy in the NFL.

Welp.

Looks like the race is back on for the 5th best conference in college football.

He probably found out what the sanctions were going to be and pulled a Pete Carroll

That wouldn't surprise me at all.

I was SHOCKED when it was reported that he was staying at Oregon. "A high-profile NCAA coach willing to stand up and face the music? NO WAI"

I see my skepticism was entirely justified.

2013-01-16 02:30:02 PM
did he just get the sanctions memo?

2013-01-16 02:30:52 PM
He's just Sabaning it up, a year in the NFL then back to college right before the NFL season starts.

It's been pretty widly reported that there are some sort of sanctions headed to Oregon

If you think any large Div 1 program doesn't do SOMETHING that could be considered cheating, (especially ones that win) I have so much real estate to sell you, you'll think it's a small moon, not a space station.

There is a reason that SEC stands for "Sure, Everybody Cheats."

Terrible move by the Eagles. They'll never win a playoff game with him as the head coach. I mean, come on, he couldn't even win ONE playoff game at Oregon

Pulling a Carroll and Saban at the same time.

Chip Kelly is...  SABANROLLING

Oregon fans don't want him to go and Eagles fans just don't want him.

A grown man that refers to himself as Chip, wears a visor and runs a Gimmick Offense.
This will not end well.

Allegedly another PAC-10 coach was asked last week why Kelly was staying at Oregon, and the coach answered "Phil Knight's money." I have to wonder whether Phil casually let Kelly know that, nope, he wasn't getting a loyalty bonus.

Yep, several sportswriters are saying this is the worst move possible. I normally think that sportswriters all share the same brain cell, but the weirdness surrounding his hire indicates that something is up. After the Eagles interviewed a whole bunch of better candidates, I get the sense that the candidates weren't willing to get involved. Kelly originally went to them, saw the same thing, and said he'd do it for sixty gazillion dollars. After everyone else saw the state the Eagles were in, they ran away, and the Eagles went ahead and paid the sixty gazillions dollars.

I'm thinking a possible Bobby Petrino/Falcons situation here. Kelly will stay around long enough to buy three mansions while the team wins four games a year.

Not sure he is cut out for the NFL. He should have stayed at Oregon where he was basically treated as a god. Overall, I think he will end up regretting this but I guess you never know unless you try.

I hope the Packers beat the Eagles in several consecutive NFC Champ games. It would be such a troll to the league and fans if he has major success.

Was really holding out hope we'd land Lovie, guess Lurie wanted someone who'd do what they were told, rather than rocking the boat.

On the plus side, top 5 draft picks for the duration of Kelly's contract!

That golf visor will cost him at least 2 NFL games in bad luck - just ask Spurrier.

Ya, I'd take what another Pac-12 coach says about Chip with a big grain of salt. They are all jealous of Chip's dominance in the past four years. Of course they are going to make snide remarks about Oregon and Phil Knight.

As a Seahawks fan, I'm glad to hear that both Chicago and Philly have gone with guys who are not our coordinators. Now we have deal with the rumors associated with Jacksonville (Bradley) and Arizona (Bevell). Not sure why Arizona wants Bevell though - he's fixated on mobile QBs and they don't have one.

Not to mention:

In 2000, Knight was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame for his Special Contribution to Sports in Oregon.[12] He is believed to have contributed approximately $230 million to the University of Oregon, the majority of which was for athletics.[13] On August 18, 2007, Knight announced that he and his wife, Penny, would be donating an additional $100 million to the University of Oregon Athletics Legacy Fund.[14] This donation is reportedly the largest in the University's history.

His significant contributions have granted him influence and access atypical of an athletic booster. In addition to having the best seats in the stadium for all University of Oregon athletic events, he has his own locker in the football team's locker room. An athletic building is named for him, the library for his mother, the law school for his father, and the basketball teams' home, Matthew Knight Arena, is named for his late son, who died in a scuba diving accident.

My wife the Bengals fan didn't want Gruden to leave.

Although having Jay would continue the fine Philadelphia sports tradition of getting the lesser known lesser talented brothers of players. Mike Maddux comes to mind, and I know there are others that I can't think of.

I think that's what the PAC-10 (is it PAC-12 now?) guy was implying...Phil Knight can bankroll the Ducks more than any NFL team short of the Cowboys can get bankrolled. He'll certainly throw more money at the program than the owners of the Browns, Eagles, or Bills would.
