Here's why it's more important. Adding 4 doors to a Corvette makes it look ridiculous. Adding 4 doors to a pickup truck makes it bigger. And bigger is better, damnit. Especially when you're a soccer mom or middle-aged accountant living in suburbia and you need to be inside of that tiny shaded area of the Venn diagram created at the intersection of "I'm still young and cool", "I can fit the entire family in it to get to the movies" and "I can haul 20 packs of bounty home from Costco." There's no other vehicle that will allow you to accomplish all these things while still being able to lean up against it on a sunny, summer afternoon, pop a beer, and complain that the price of gas is ridiculous and those damn gubmint bureaucrats need to fix shiat, I'll-tell-you-what.

Holy hell batman, why did I have to read all the way down to the end of the article to finally get an answer to that nagging question raised in the headline?

They aren't actually bigger in most cases. The shape has just been contoured to make it appear bigger. Plus the roof pillars have been chunked out for safety reasons and the wheels are bigger. The big-ness is an optical illusion. My 2007 F-150 isn't any bigger than the 1989 Chevy 1500 I started with as a teen.

I like the Atlas a lot except one thing. The grill and front end treatment just seems too busy. I hope they simplify it a bit for production. Keep the tail lights and interior though. They rock.

I liked the Tacoma and Frontier as they were still smaller trucks.
They are getting American Bloat now as well.

Pros vs Cons...

This article jumps on the old "people who own truck but don't need them" boloney. Very few people really fall into that category. 6 out of 7 days I don't put anything in the back of my truck that I couldn't have fit into an SUV or small car, but the shiat that goes in the back on the 7th drives demand. Driveway space, lack of a garage space, upkeep and finances usually dictate that a person not own a truck and a car. Having useless 2X year old "adult" children that would just borrow a "spare" vehicle anyway factors in as well. I'd love to be driving a little performance car daily instead, but then I'd b the one constantly asking for help from those around me that thought ahead enough to buy a truck. I'd be just like my sister in law with the Mercedes SUV that is too expensive to Sport Utilize in any way or my friends with the Toyota cars and a Corvette in the garage.

I tend to think the same goes for the proverbial guy in the burbs as well. People who have trouble minding their own business see an empty bed and think the guy doesn't need that vehicle. Being gay, they then think about his penis size and what it would feel like in their mouths, but that's beside the point. That same guy might be picking up a water heat (a cold water heater) on Saturday. Maybe the following weekend he is loading roofing materials for friends. A week after that he might be helping someone move - the same sort of someone who believes they know what kind of vehicles everyone needs.

Ford's engineers beat that truck with the ugly stick. It sure as hell doesn't look more aerodynamic than the current model.

For the first time ever I'm actually thinking of getting a truck. I just bought my first house last year (Sept) and I've needed to borrow a truck from a friend for house work 6 times already. My car is a 05 GTI with low milage (65k) that's paid off and I ride my motorcycle 9 months of the year for daily commute (which gets about 45-50mph). So the truck would be for weekend/family time and commuting the 3 months it's too cold to ride at 6 am.

Heh, I agree completely. I love driving my Mustang, especially in the summer when I can cruise around with the top down. You know what I don't like? Not being able to transport anything larger than a toaster oven. Yeah, I may not need to drive around with a bed full of lumber every day, but for those times when I get a project in mind and build a list of things I'll need to pick up at the hardware store, I'm really starting to wish I had a damn truck.

I'm really not a fan of the family-friendly SUVs (with a tiny pickup bed). If I had one of those I'd still need to rent a damn truck.

Converted to Highlander with 3rd Row as kids got into "take friends too" age.

Now, to do the same stuff weekly I did with my truck I have a hitch carrier and a trailer.
More space taken up in my yard, more expense, more hooking/unhooking.

Did I mention I love my children.

ford recently killed off the ranger/mazda b2000 series... which leaves exactly nothing in the way of a small pickup... which I suspect there is a bit of market demand for... 4 cyl, manual tranny, lil pickup... why won't they make something I'd like to buy?

A Mustang is defintiely one of my top picks for the daily drive. Loved my old 69. I know a guy who had a reciever installed on his late 90s Camaro. Maybe you could consider doing that....no, don't!
