Never underestimate the power of a Boehner.

The powers that run the GOP want them to stop this debt ceiling stupidity because it will cost them money, and a lot of it.

They run on risk versus reward, and I have no doubts that if they could somehow come out ahead by not raising the debt ceiling, they would be saying "Hold the line".

Is this really the first Koch brothers article on which it isn't appropriate for me to say "Shut up, you rich Kochs!" ???

What is this I don't even

2013-01-16 01:56:10 PM
My expectation is that it's going to be another vote like the Sandy relief bills, where after much gnashing of teeth, finger pointing, and hyperbole, 90+% of the Democrats and 20-30% of the Republicans in the House approve it, it passes the Senate without issue, and we repeat the cycle all over again.

2013-01-16 01:56:37 PM
FTA: The AFP president also warned Republicans not to be seen as "hostage takers."

Not "don't take the economy hostage" or even a more general "don't use terrorist tactics", but an admonition not to be seen as doing such. I wouldn't say the Koch brothers have completely abandoned the party...

2013-01-16 01:57:55 PM
Besides, once they've lost their Kochs their voices will become all high and squeaky and nobody can hear them anyway.

They didn't maintain their ungodly wealth by being foolish. They know that another debt ceiling showdown, and any subsequent fallout such as credit downgrades, decreases in the of the dollar or it's place as the world's choice for stable currency, effects them in ways regular people probably don't realize. They haven't suddenly joined Team Obama, they're merely looking out for their own interests, and the Teabagger brigade that is content to nuke the economy just to stick it to Obama and the Liberals goes against that.

Um... so? Kochs are industrialists that buy politicians, they're not really politically motivated themselves. Why would they keep buying politicians on the side that's losing?

The 2 sides of the GOP are finally squaring off. The Corporate / wealthy side want nothing to do with tanking the economy, but the Religious/Deep Southern base don't care, so long as they have ideology and righteous indignation. Could this be the thing that tears the party apart? I was waiting to see what would cause the 2 sides to tear apart.

I don't know if any single thing will do it, but if Obama keeps being this tough on issue after issue, forcing the mainstream Rs to compromise or get blamed for failure, the derpside could go into full revolt in the midterms.  The primaries could see a nationwide slate of Wests, Akins, and Mourdocks, running on insane platforms and promises to impeach Obama for imagined crimes.

You know, for people who see themselves as supermen or really special because of the money they leech from the 99%, you would think they would know of the French Revolution and such. Then again, leeches like these have been around since the turn of the 20th Century and ignoring that lesson.

Technically much of the spending was voted for by previous congresses many years ago. The TeaParty for the most part didn't vote for the spending. That said they still inherited the responsibilities of it.

I have pointed out on numerous occasions that if the right wing had a lick of sense, instead of masturbating to "Atlas Shrugged" and dreaming about being a "great man", they SHOULD be reading about the French Revolution, because once to start doing that, you very quickly notice how many similarities there are between then and now.

Eh, a lot of the richy-riche can get out of the area when the peasants rise up, now that they aren't landed gentry. When the revolution comes, it's not going to be the 1% that take the worst (proportional) hits, it's going to be the 2-10%ers who aren't leading the revolt.

Or they realize that companies that they own are getting government subsidies, which may not get paid out if the debt ceiling is raised. (Doesn't the president get to determine what gets paid and what doesn't in that case?)

I hear this and in my mind it's like one of Blanche's rants from Golden Girls - one that goes on for a good five minutes and the studio audience stands and applauds afterwards.

In other words, there is not enough *THIS* to give to this comment.
