Ditto: Having been homeless, I saw a lot of foks who were caught in a downward spiral and had no inner compass or will to pull them selves out. Me, I stayed employed, and eventually got out of the slump. Hell, I even took 20 "campers" on a whale watch on Cape Cod that had a nice buffet on board. Good times.

Please.
Nobody has to be homeless, or an alcoholic for that matter. There is a more than adequate social services system in place in this country for him to get all the help he wants and a place to live for free if he wants it. And while I agree that he can't do anything about the deformity at this point, I would bet that it was caused by something that he did have control over at the time. Perhaps not, but I'd call it likely given the obvious long term pattern of desctructive choices the man has undertaken.

So rest assured, Mr. White Knight...we do mock him for what he does, not for what he can't control Although if he doesn't have control over his bladder we would surely mock him for that as well.

CSB, but that guy in the middle is actually a regular at the community outreach office where my wife volunteers. If I recall the story correctly, he was injured in Vietnam in the early 70s and is on government disability. The pics don't show it, but he had extensive damage / burn recovery on his right arm as well. I was under the impression he was rehabilitated as far as the alcohol goes, but it's a shame since it seems he's off the wagon.

There's no place that I'd rather be than right here
With my red necks, white socks and blue ribbon beer
The barmaid is mad 'cause some guy made a pass
The juke box is playin' there stands the glass
And the cigarette smoke kind-a hangs in the air
Red-necks, white socks and blue rib-bon beer
A cow-boy is cussin' the pin-ball ma-chine
A drunk at the bar is get-tin' noisy and mean
And, some guy on the phone says ill be home soon dear
Red-necks white socks and blue ribbon beer

CHORUS:
No we don't fit in with that white collar crowd
We're a little too rowdy and a little too loud
There's no place that I'd rather be than right here
With my red-necks white socks and blue ribbon beer
The semis are passing on the highway outside
The four thirty crowd is about to arrive
The sun's go-in' down and we'll all soon be here
Rednecks, white socks and blue ribbon beer

REPEAT CHORUS

There's no place that I'd rather be than right here
With my red-necks, white socks and blue ribbon beer

I have actually ran into these guys, well the one in the middle and the one on the right. I was at a bus stop that is right outside of a liquor store and those two come up. The picture of the one in the middle actually looks good. He is not in good shape when you see him in person. But he was singing some good ole ditties about drinking as he took the plastic pour spout thing from his bottle of vodka. The one on the right was so shiatfaced that he had this nasty brown liquid coming out of his mouth.

In the P.O.?
<CSB>, after bartending all night I'd frequently stop and pick up some groceries on the way home.
Shopping at Waldbaums with a Vodak tonic or a cold beer is really the way to shop.
Smoking a cigarette sipping a VT with lime pushing a cart.
Night crew always had some great blues on the PA

It just seemed more civilized than hungover soccer moms with screaming toddlers and fat pensioners in scooters listening to Karen Carpenter wailing.

That was then.  I don't think the nice young folks at COSTCO would get Howlin' Wolf or Eddie "Clean Head" Vinson.

Typical Randian sentiment.

Some people are not fortunate. Some people don't have the kind of family support system, internal compass, whatever it is, that helps get them from point A to some point better than A. Some people are just stupid.

You can look at a wasted life and chalk it up to a series of poor decisions, if that makes you feel superior about the choices you've made. Or you could ask yourself, what if you were born into the same situation into which that guy was, and if so, could you have managed a more favorable outcome?

I'm not that cocky.

According to a guy in the thread, he believes that he knows the man in the article and he's a Vietnam Vet. Do I think that he could control being drafted to Nam and getting injured? I guess, if George H.W. Bush was his father. But, I don't think he had the option.

randian. lol.

we are all in the pkace we are in based on how we chose to to deal w the cards we were dealt.

I grew up extremely poor and physically abused. Did I become a homeless alcoholic? No.
Ichose to have a better life.
My brother (RIP) on the other hand, didnt choose wisely and recently died due to alcohol related heart disease.

So yes, I do think that people are responsible for the choices they make on how they live.

I'm not that cocky.

randian. lol.

we are all in the pkace we are in based on how we chose to to deal w the cards we were dealt.

You're a complete jackass. If I was your brother, I'd drink myself to death too.

ausfahrk: CSB, but that guy in the middle is actually a regular at the community outreach office where my wife volunteers.

Typical Randian sentiment.

So can anybody be held personally accountable for anything?

And does it work both ways? Meaning if you grow up to be a billionaire should you have to give all your money to anyone whose had influence on you, or should you be able to keep some of that money because you've made some correct personal choices?

That my fellow Farkers is a deltopectoral flap. It is raised off of the chest wall which is reconstructed with skin grafts and then rotated up onto the face or head to reconstruct massive tissue loss, damage or extirpation. He could have passed out drunk and lain on the right side of his face for 16 hours while he was sobering up and necrosed the entire area or he had a shotgun in his mouth and turned his head at almost the right moment or simply decades of alcohol and tobacco abuse grew him a nice big squamous cell carcinoma and that was how much they had to take out to get clear margins on the intraoperative frozen sections. The next step is cutting the base and replacing as much as they possibly can back in the original position after removing the skin grafts.

I have a sneaking suspicion he might have missed some follow up appointments.

He's actually a great guy, when you get to know him. He's one of the few people I've met who truly has a heart of gold and cares about other people. He's got a good laugh, and a lot of interesting stories to tell about his life. It's a shame what happened to him and where it's caused him to end up.

It doesn't cost you anything to extend a little compassion to these guys. They may have made some bad choices, but you don't know what all their lives have been like, what opportunities they have or haven't had. Sure, YOU may have been all bootstrappy, but not everyone has that ability.

Maybe if they go through the court system then can get some help? I don't know. I hope so.

What the hell are you basing that on?

In my State, unless you're a child or you're pregnant, you basically get NO HELP AT ALL.  Doesn't matter if your annual income is $0.00.  Doesn't matter if you're mentally ill (unless you're a danger to others) or have a chronic disease.

If you live in my State and you're ill and you don't have insurance or you're homeless and don't have a job, you had better hope that the county you live in collects a special tax to aid people like you...because the State will do absolutely nothing for you.

On top of all that, many hospitals in my State have to sell themselves to larger systems or face the possibility of closure because they're burdened by the financial strain of uncompensated care.

And, what does the governor do?  Does he shore up the hospitals and protect the vulnerable citizenry of the State by accepting the incredibly generous (to States) Medicaid expansion in the Affordable Care Act?  No.  He rejects it.  Because of politics. Yet, he wants us to believe he's pro-life.

I dont know what is hostile about saying we are where we are on the path of life due to our own choices.

So you think instead of sitting in a nice warm VA hospital bed having his reconstructive surgery completed he's out freezing his ass off and taking refuge in a post office and getting arrested. DP flaps are a pain in the ass for patients for a number of reasons and they're usually left in place for only 3 to 4 months before the second stage during which time they biatch and moan nonstop. The last guys left Nam in '75 so he'd have had the flap in place for a minimum 38 years now so I doubt he's a patient from Nam. They also would have done it while he was still active duty if he was injured in combat.
