I am not normally for custodial sentences for trivial matters like throwing a rabbit off a bridge. I would never commit cruelty to animals in this way, but I believe too high a premium is put on non-sentient beings and that a big fine would be sufficient punishment.

That said, in this case, at least according to the facts as presented in the article, this 18-year-old delinquent stole the property of a homeless man, a thoroughly despicable act, and more so because this property was a living animal that the homeless man has adopted a huge attachment to (enough of one to jump off a bridge to rescue it.) To do something like that to a vulnerable person for a quick laugh is despicable. In view of these circumstances, a four-month jail sentences is entirely appropriate and I commend the magistrate for it.

This. Being around regular criminals in a regular jail/prison is just going to broaden the young sociopath's horizons. Dunno, but I think it would be difficult for any farker to put themselves in the mind of a decades-long homeless person in terms of value placed on things unless they've been there.

The bridge isn't really that high.. I wouldn't really say he was risking his life, people jump off shiat higher than that for fun all the time.

It's not so much the height of the bridge, but rather the depth of the water. If he somehow went in headfirst, and there were large rocks 2 feet below the surface, he could well have been risking his life.

It goes like this: the party has just beaten the Big Bad Evil Guy. The room beyond him is mostly empty, but the exit door is locked. Magic fails to budge the door, and lockpicks simply break. Next to the door is a small table, and on the table is a small gilt cage. There are two things in the cage. One is a key that looks like it might fit the lock; it is taped to the cage floor. The other is a small white rabbit, which is currently asleep.

The actual solution is simply to open the cage, take out the key, and use it to unlock the door. The point of the puzzle, though, is to sit back and laugh while the party goes through ridiculous contortions not to touch the cage or disturb the rabbit.

Child molesters have the worst recidivism rate (i.e. are most likely to re-commit the same crime) - do they need extensive corrective therapy, or the death penalty?

I'm all for diverting minor offenders into "not-jail" situations - counseling, weekly PO visits, mandatory rehab - but let's not start breaking it down based on the kind of crime. We can all agree that first offenders are the most likely to benefit from such interventions, and more minor crimes (like petty theft or animal cruelty) are more deserving of such interventions.

Jail shouldn't be a one-way ticket out of the ability to function normally (so, we don't lock up petty thieves with multiple murderers), but we also shouldn't pretend that therapy can help every hardened criminal turn their lives around.

Former homeless here. I had a dog (Rot/mutt mix) that was literally the only thing that helped keep me sane. I got her when she was a pup about 6 months old. She listened when I talked, helped keep me warm on cold nights, gave me warning when someone approached us, was always ready for a head scratch or just to put her head in my lap and hang out and stayed beside me when the "friends" that introduced me to the drugs that started a downward spiral that left me homeless abandoned me.

Would I have jumped in a river to save her? Absolutely! Would I have lost my mind on anyone who hurt her? Without a second thought.

I just hate this guy is still homeless and begging.

/clean for 12 years.
