I'm glad to see that there is room for experimentation in the bourbon world. Attempts to introduce new aging techniques to Scotch get nixed by the Scotch Whisky Association, as the fine folks at Compass Box have found out.

/still sad that my bottle of first-edition Spice Tree is no more

stupiddream: I like plain old Jim Beam.  There I said it.  Now don't get me wrong, I like Makers Mark and Wild Turkey, but plain old Jim Beam is awesome for the price.  I can have several drinks if I wish and not have a hang over the next day and that counts big in my book.  I would prefer to drink Basil Hayden (which is just fancy Jim Beam) all the time but I can't afford it.

Check out Russels Reserve.

It's less than $20 for a fifth, and it tastes pretty damn good. I tried it in a blind taste test, so price point wasn't even there to influence how I felt about it.

Quantum Apostrophe: Fubegra: Maybe it's just me, but I'm underwhelmed by Spice Tree. Maybe it's because I have a "second edition" bottle? I dunno, I prefer my Glenfarclas and Ardbegs. And Bowmore, Laphroaig, etc...

Islays are a good thing too... I'm rationing my stash of Ardbeg 10 that I amassed back when it was $30/bottle. On the other hand, it's been at least seven years since I last had a bottle of Lagavulin, mostly because of the price skyrocketing.

Back to American whiskey, I'm still kicking myself for not buying a case of Rittenhouse Bonded Rye before the hipsters discovered it. It was $11/bottle, now it's about double. Meanwhile, Wild Turkey dropped their rye's proof to 81 without a corresponding drop in price. Bastards.
