I used to drink three times the caffeine from 3 cans of Mountain Dew code red spread out through a day. The energy drinks I use equal 1 cup of coffee per can. Which doesn't do crap without the vitamins that provide the energy. Forget sugar. I get enough of it when I decide to make a good ol' fashioned southern sweet tea

I exercise the same amount that I did when i was drinking Code Reds.

But I get a better health outlook simply because I replaced them.

It should also be noted that the amount of caffeine and sugar my dad used to have to be mobile from his pot of coffee was the equivalent of an energy drink junkie's sick day. When they can only just barely suck down 3 cans of Monster. People switched to energy drinks because coffee didn't really taste that good. Then complain when doctors tell them too much is just as unhealthy.

Back when I used to work at the clubs if I was beat before the night started I would have a quarter of a can of rockstar (they were free at work) and I would be fine for a few days. a few years ago I worked with a guy that would drink FOUR Monsters a day while he took whatever meds he was on. By noon he was all jittery and weird we called him tweek since he was so much like him.

This kind of thing--caffeine-jammed drinks, sugar-jammed drinks--along with everything else--tobacco, alcohol, junk food outlets on every corner (and in every school lunch room), every kind of drug you can name from pot to "legal" barbituates to nuclear crystal meth.  Throw in an ocean of guns and a small but very vocal red-faced minority of people jumping up and down and itching to yank on all of the triggers at once.  While cramming cheeseburgers, 64 oz big gulps, pills and cigarettes into their mouths simultaneously as they scream about their rights.

I should have been clearer.

No, I didn't mean prior to exercise. I meant regularly, cardio or muscle-building, an hour a day (or so.)

I tried getting into coffee when I went to college. I found institution of a regular exercise regimen did more for my energy levels than 2-3 cups of coffee in the AM. (I adjusted my diet as well, but that's another issue.)

Any addict will tell you that adding more drug doesn't resolve the underlying issues, it just blinds you to them. I understand everyone's body chemistry isn't the same, but I cannot be convinced that an adjusted diet and regular exercise won't do more for you, long and short term, than addressing the symptoms (tiredness) with a chemical will. It even helped my mood, in terms of general outlook and stability.

But that's hard, and requires effort. Much easier to drink boiled bean juice and enjoy all of the fun side effects a caffeine addiction brings with it.

but when are we going to have a serious conversation about sleep deprivation? it's becoming common here, where people get in their cars on the expressway for an hour each way.. when i got a DUI dude got me fair: i was lit. but exhaustion is every bit as dangerous. we just don't hear about it, because there's no way to gain political advantage or revenue off of it. a shot of caffeine or B-12 is not the answer. we need to shed the bullshiat in our lives, and, if there is still any way, demand better working hours.

I used to drink energy drinks a lot. 2-3 a day of the monster sized cans. Stopped doing it cause it was expensive, and tasted pretty aweful.
I switched to taking a multivitaien every morning and sometimes a cup of coffee in the morning. The multivitamin does more for me then the energy drinks did. And If I really feel like it I'll take a B vitamin complex.

Last time i took energy drinks was 2 5-hour energy's on the 10 hour trip from here to San Diego. It made me feel like crap so I'm not doing that again.

If it saves one life, it's worth it.
