"The last couple of seasons have really been about her emotional inabilities. It's made that character of Penny a well-rounded one and you'd assume it would always be Leonard's fault but he's been a pretty good partner to her."

To be fair, she was only hired because she was already well rounded in a couple of specific areas...

It's not the same type of show as Seinfeld. It kinda has to progress a little.

I don't get why this all of a sudden means jumping the shark?? Howard got married, went to space, Sheldon has a girlfriend. SHELDON has a GIRLFRIEND.

I think it's about damn time they stop with the "will they break up or won't they", and just leave them together as a couple.

Sheldon and Penny are the best comedic team in years, not kidding. They always seem to make me guffaw no matter what.

2013-01-16 11:32:40 AM
I kinda don't want this to happen.

I don't understand why either of those characters would want to be together.

She's an idiot, and he's a nerd.

They could both do better for themselves.

2013-01-16 11:41:25 AM
A) They've been together on and off for a few seasons and it hasn't hurt the ratings at all.

B) Since they added the other two women the show doesn't center around any one couple.

C) Like the writers for Castle, they seem to know how to handle writing relationships so they aren't annoying.

If you want a current example of of show that does NOT know how to accomplish these things, I suggest you watch Bones.

2013-01-16 11:43:28 AM

How could this be called jumping the shark? The clear intent of the show, from episode 1, scene 1, was for for them to end up together. Nerd gets the hot girl, and everyone grows up and integrates their geeky lives in with practical life matters. That's the entire premise of the show. Of course they're going to get engaged.

Did someone say jumping over lethal predators?

download.lardlad.com
Ladies and gentlemen, and especially little children. I'm glad you're
all here to witness what may very well be my grisly death. Tonight, my
most dangerous stunt. I will death-defy both nature and gravity by
leaping over this tank of water, filled with man-eating great white sharks,
deadly electric eels, ravenous piranha, bone-crushing alligators, and
perhaps most frightening of all, the king of the jungle, one ferocious lion!
[a lion is added to the pool]
Heh heh heh. I almost forgot. To add a real element of danger, one
drop of human blood.
[pricks his finger, one drop of blood falls in, the pool bubbles furiously]
Now, in case I don't survive, let me just say, seat belts save lives, so
buckle up

Contrary to popular belief, the demise of Moonlighting was not caused by the resolution of the romantic tension, but by the deterioration of writing on the show over-all, not to mention Bruce Willis' desire to jump to the big screen.  Yes, them getting together happened at around the same time, but post hoc ergo propter hoc is still bad logic.

BalugaJoe: if they get married then Leonard has to move away from Sheldon and that is the whole point of the show.

Just have Penny move in with Leonard, and Sheldon move to Penny's apartment. That keeps the 3 of them in close proximity, and lots of comedic opportunities with Sheldon adjusting to a new apartment.

Or have Leonard move to Penny's apartment, and Sheldon get Raj as his new roommate.

True that Baybrook Mall is in Clear Lake, a Houston suburb, but it's only about 20 miles from Galveston and the closest thing to a real mall for Galveston since the Galvez Mall closed years ago and Mall of the Mainland all but closed too. I grew up on the island and Sheldon's references are usually off. Considering Parsons is from Houston, you'd think he'd work with the writers to get it right. Anyway, more pictures of Kaley please...

I know, and that's what I said to people when we talked about it the next day... (I live in Clear Lake, and, ha, work part time at Baybrook (Lego for the win!)) And I said the same thing, Parsons is from here, you think he would have said something...
It was funny him mentioning it tho... the management at Baybrook went NUTS

/to get all technical... Baybrook was in the county, with a Friendswood zipcode... Houston annexed it along with the neighborhood behind it, but allowed the Friendswood zip to stay... the four corners of Bay Area Blvd and 1-45 belong to 4 different municipitalities...

That's the point of jumping the shark. When the inevitable outcome couple finally couples the show runs out of gas. May not be the case in BBT since the focus is just as often on Sheldon and his man-child antics so the Leonard-Penny romance is a side story not the main event but it definitely has Shark Jump possibility. That's OK though, the show has had a good long run and I'd rather see them move forward so that they are fully together when the show does end rather than some "slap them together at the last minute to wrap it up". Too many shows ruin their premise by stretching it out beyond reason or sense. You cant have sexual tension forever without giving in to it. So put them together and see if the show still has something to say.

My aging nerd self, and ditzy, out-of-my-league gf and I enjoy BBT together.

Sure, its fairly like many sitcoms since Friends, which changed the writing/pacing of sitcoms toward the end of the last century. Sure, they get nerd/science stuff wrong from time-to-time, but so did our beloved ST and SW.

This whole nerdrage about the guys being "minstrels" is stupid. We don't have spies on here railing against Bond? Hollywood ROUTINELY gets my business wrong, often to the detriment of my day.

But, just as an accurate depiction of my business would not be as romantic, "real" nerds would not be as entertaining, and real espionage is not covered up in TnA and gadgets.

Or, to quote my late father, answering young FPB's queries about obvious plot holes, etc in Hollywood, "That's how it is in the script."

ITS A FARKING TV SHOW AND A PRETTY OK ONE AT THAT SO JUST ENJOY IT AND STF UP!

I love Big Bang Theory, but I'm not sure this is a good idea.  Half the fun of their relationship is the awkwardness they have as a couple...and the tension that they're not altogether together (at least in Penny's mind).  Howard's marriage to Bernadette kinda killed how weird he is around women (though Melissa Rauch does a good job being like Howard's Mom)

irving47: Just out of curiosity... Despite that he "has a girlfriend" does anyone argue AT ALL that Sheldon's character has advanced/developed/matured one bit since the first season?

Yes, though not as much as the other main characters. He's more tolerant of other people and their actions, has more than just Leonard as his friend, and actually shows pride in the accomplishments of his friends. Add that to the things he's slowly working through with Amy, and it shows more change than most people with his social deficiencies typically can handle in five years.

This could certainly screw things up, but I'm willing to give the writers the benefit of the doubt. Howard the sleaze marrying a successful, well-rounded (ahem) cutie-pie was a potential shark jump, but it the show has survived that rather well. The writers even figured out how to have Amy manage not only to kiss both Sheldon and Penny, but to get some pretty heavy petting and spankings from Sheldon, while not eroding Sheldon's asexual antisocial Aspurgers at all in the process.

Heh, much bettter than my response. :)

I like that on tuesday nights (using several channels) I get BBT just before the 5pm local news, then right after local news, then at 7pm I get 4 back to back to take me to bedtime. Any other night I just get the before and after news.

And yes, I watch all of them. Worst part is if I do fall asleep, I wake up to Cougartown (my IQ dropped just typing that) sometime after 9, if I can stay awake I can watch BBT again at 9:30.

The ultimate marriage of Wrath and Sloth is when you get angry at a show for not being funny when you wake up from a nap on the couch and are too lazy to change the channel.

I find that getting up and going to an actual bed helps in that case. As does not actually having a TV in the bedroom.

I'd call it a narrative challenge that could easily lead to a shark jump, but one that you can't avoid indefinitely.

See also: Daphne and Niles.

Daphne and Niles worked because they were tertiary characters, and the show was never solely about will they/won't they? That's why they could finally get together, because it didn't disrupt the overall dynamic of the show, it only added to it. After all, 11 seasons is way too long to go without some character progression. Frasier remained single the entire run, rarely having a girlfriend, so Niles could divorce Marris (and Mel) to wind up with Daphne.

Same thing with BBT Once the show got away from just being about Leonard and Penny, but focused on all four guys and the three girls, it got a lot more interesting. This allows real relationship growth and you don't lost the dynamic of the show just because you pair up two of the leads. When you do it right, you can still get a lot of comedy out of it. I've loved watching both of them adjust to being in a relationship with each other, and having them together doesn't lesson any of their conflicts or comedy potential.

Honestly, it makes sense for them to get married, if that's the plan. If done right, the progression to marriage and their life as a married couple will be just as funny. Howard's schlep down the aisle was pretty awesome, so the show knows how to portray a relationship in a way that's funny, not grating. (Unless you hate Howard and/or Bernadette.)

Other shows have shown it's possible to have a great show even after pairing up the leads, and they include Castle, Cougar Town, and Bones. BBT will hopefully be able to pull it off.

I really like the show. Is not awesome is not terrific, but is a nice way to kill 25 minutes or while you do other things

Is not an ACCURATE portrait of nerds, geeks and likes, but is a sitcom, not a journalistic documentary.

If you don't like it, it's OK... is not for you, you don't find it funny, whatever...

But call it "nerd blackface" or "geek minstrel show" is blow things WAAAY over proportion about a sitcom and trivialize the (in my opinion) more legitimate complains about media portraits of other groups.

Actually my point was that having D&N get together was a problem that couldn't be avoided and that it, ultimately, hurt the show. I guess if you think that the quality of the show didn't suffer, then you'll disagree with my overall point.

IMO, however, trying to permanently postpone these things doesn't work out. Cheers managed to avoid pairing up Sam but, when all was said and done, I think that the audience was disappointed that there was no closure.

I suppose it depends. Is not having an enormous stick up your ass a personality trait? How about not being a dick about things that other people enjoy? Would that qualify?

2013-01-16 06:20:58 PM

Digitalstrange: I remember someone on fark calling The Big Bang Theory and The IT Crowd "blackface for geeks." Apparently being a geek means you lack a sense of perspective.

While it lacks the backlash that blackface caused the comparison isn't entirely invalid. It is indeed the same kind of broad brush caricature of a group.

Which is, otherwise, known as a sitcom.

Sitcoms indulge in stereotypes. If there a surfer on a show? Then he's a stereotypical southern California surfer, circa 1985. Is there a gay guy on a show? Then he's either super gay or super not-at-all gay unless he says so. Is there a black character? Probably sassy. Is there an authority figure? Almost certainly an uptight jerkwad. And so forth and so on.

Look, if you just hate sitcoms, that's fine. I can understand and respect that and, on some basic level, I can even agree with you because sitcoms are low to middle-brow and aren't going to be everyone's pleasure. But if your problem is that this  particular sitcom is stereotyping a  particular group that you happen to be part of then I would respectfully suggest growing a thicker skin.

I would also point out that in spite of all the stereotypes and the low-hanging "nerds can't get dates" jokes, ultimately the audience is supposed to sympathize with and like the characters.  The last episode had the gang out in their Trek uniforms getting garbage thrown at them and being scorned to yokels, and much of the scorn they got was of the typical sort... but the way it was depicted was that the people tormenting them were being assholes and that the cast were being unfairly victimized for being a little different and having fun in ways that weren't mainstream. That's a decent message, IMO.

Yes, it would be nice if there were some kind of documentary or something that exposed people to the  actualreality of being a nerd, but I just don't think that the BBT is hurting us.  If the only thing that people take away from the show is that nerds are weird but also kind of fun and that we have feelings then, frankly, I'm perfectly fine with that.

Bullshiat, it's totally realistic to any nerd I know. 24 hour gaming parties, comic book collecting, inane conversations about said comic heroes, Dr Who loving, socially awkward weird motherfarkers.

I don't watch much network TV..actually, not that much TV at all.  But Big Bang Theory is one show I don't miss (the other being The Walking Dead).  Why BBT?  I find it funny because I KNOW people like those characters...maybe not as smart, but nerds that are into comic books, toys, RPG board games, as well as being socially awkward with women.  They're good people, just different... like the characters on the show.

Taste is subjective.  If you don't like it...fine, don't watch.  But looking down at those that do like it doesn't make you superior, it makes you a douchebag.

Actually I just met a PhD in Particle Physics that my company hired for data analytics.  He said he doesn't watch the show because it reminds him too much of the people he worked with at MIT while he was working on his PhD.  There are a plenty of people like the characters on the show that are out there..maybe not in your circle...but definitely in mine.

The reason why so many nerds dislike the show is that it's a show about nerds for non-nerds. The jokes are at the nerds' expense. The audience isn't laughing WITH Sheldon, they're laughing AT Sheldon. Factor in all the stereotypes (and not even just for the nerds, but also the dumb blonde across the hall who wants to make it big in Hollywood but instead waits tables, and the harpy Jewish mom) and we have bad TV.

And someone else mentioned How I Met Your Mother and stated that that show's stereotype is that everyone is gorgeous. No, that's not a stereotype, that's Hollywood's "everyone must be beautiful or no one will watch" bullshiat rule. It's a completely different problem than stereotyping. Also, I would argue that Ted and Marshall actually aren't good looking. Average, at best. The women are smoking hot though, especially Cobie Smulders.

Some 'Splainin' To Do: soporific: Some 'Splainin' To Do: SithLord: i wouldn't call it jumping the shark. That's the inevitable outcome of the pair. Or she finds out she's pregnant out of wedlock and it ain't Leonard's. But isn't that what this show is about? Enamored nerdy physicist falls for the hot blonde next door?

I'd call it a narrative challenge that could easily lead to a shark jump, but one that you can't avoid indefinitely.

No, the show sucks.  It's the same sitcom you've seen since the 60's with the same archetypes, but people who like it don't know any better because it's their first time seeing it.  But it really isn't, because 2 and some odd Men is the same show.  Doesn't change the suck factor.  Objectively, it sucks.  Same formula, same process, same jokes with different topics.

I'll give you points because it's possible that people who watch it don't realize it sucks, but I'm not responsible for the stupidity of other human beings.  They have to realize their mistakes on their own.

What I find truly amusing is the effort someone will go through to defend a douchebag position that is entirely subjective. When you finally get your big-boy pants you may realize that not everything is the way you see it, no matter how much you wish it were, and adults frequently have differing viewpoints, none of which are wrong.

How does it feel to completely and utterly miss the point of the show?

See, if you were attacking the portrayals of Howard or Raj, you might have a point. But people who attack the show because of Sheldon tend to be delusional. People like Sheldon for the same reason they like House and Sherlock. You wouldn't want to be their friend in real life, but you admire their intelligence and their wit when you watch them on TV. And Sheldon is actually more likable as a person than House is, because House is intentionally cruel.

Look at how many awards Jim Parsons has won for best actor. You know why he earns those awards? Because people respect his character. That doesn't happen if you're only going for cheap laughs. Did Urkel or Screech ever win a Golden Globe? No, because people don't respect those characters.

Seriously, do Doctors ever go around whining, "Grrr, the entire point of House is to depict all doctors as assholes, it's like blackface, but for the medical profession!" Of course not, because they understand how fiction works.

Madbassist1: Lsherm: What I find truly amusing is the effort people will expend defending a bad sitcom. It's like watching someone defend racism.

What I find truly amusing is the effort someone will go through to defend a douchebag position that is entirely subjective. When you finally get your big-boy pants you may realize that not everything is the way you see it, no matter how much you wish it were, and adults frequently have differing viewpoints, none of which are wrong.

You're assuming this is effort.  It's not.  I'm making the world a better place by pointing out the emperor has no clothes.  The show is stupid, and it's so stupid that people who like it clearly suffer from some form of stupidity or mental illness.

You can't build a better world without identifying the morons.  TBBT provides that litmus test.
