I thought the only survivors of the Halifax Pop Explosion were Sloan, The Super Friendz, Jale, Thrush Hermit, The Joel Plaskett Emergency, Hardship Post, Plumtree, Local Rabbits, The Flashing Lights...

/Man, I miss that scene. I know I'm the only one, but I don't care.

Hmmm. Could the green diamond actually mean he has glass embedded in his head from the explosion?

Back story: An munitions ship blew up in the Halifax harbor during WWI. Killed lots of people and blinded many more from the windows being blown out from the explosion. Buckets of eyeballs in the surgery room.

Can't think of the title but there is an excellent book written about the disaster; came out a few years back. I read it last year.

Also, there was one of those History Minute segments focused on a telegraph operator who died after warning an approaching train to stop. Probably saved hundreds of people. And CBC made a decent TV movie (probably based on that book) a few years back.

I think there was also a "Stuff You Missed in History Class" podcast about it too. Worth a listen, IMO.

The Halifax disaster was one of my great-grandfather's big causes; he made a killing in the stock market and gave away gobs of money for earthquake relief, flood relief, war relief, etc. But Halifax might have been his biggest effort, with Boston being the closest major city.

More Nova Scotians died at Halifax that day than died in the trenches; apparently the first explosion of greater force was the Trinity test.

Where are the conspiracy whack jobs on this?

There was not an "explosion" . Was all media hype.

Bet that an off shore naval frigette shot a long range cruise cannon ball at........

All made up. Killed offed anyone who would leak the real story...... Photo's were 'shopped...

Wondering why Jesse the wrestler / conspiracy whack off hasn't gotten his crackrd team on this one.

Story has all the earmarks of a good one to exploit.... I smells a cover up!!.....Woodrow Wilson ordered this....U.S. wanted to invade Canada to control the maple syrup industry....I saw the secret documents, the smoking gun!

My godfather told me about when he was an ensign in the Royal Navy on a ship that came to provide aid after the explosion. He was 17, and led a shore party to pull people from the rubble. He said the chaos was indescribable, and that he was forced to put a badly burned cat out of its misery with his service pistol.

The only one of those I don't remember is Hardship Post. I saw Plaskett at The Horeshoe in Toronto during his 4 night stand there a couple of months ago. Excellent show. I noticed that the audience was miked, so I'm hoping he plans on turning it into a live album.

Boston's Christmas tree still comes from Nova Scotia as thanks for all the help the city and its people provided after the explosion. There is still a massive amount of cachet that comes from having the tree come from your land.

Ah, OK that's it. I thought it was because the real headline called him "Treasured Survivor" and I thought "Wow, that Fark headline is a real stretch".

Nah, I miss it a bit, though I was a few years too young to go to the bar shows. Mostly I remember hearing the music on CBC's Brave New Waves around midnight. CSB: In high school I hand-painted a Sloan "Peppermint EP" t-shirt, none of my friends understood what it was about.
