Look at that sad single mother and her sad children barely scraping by on a quarter of a million dollars a year. That little girl just realized she may have to give up her dreams of Harvard and go to *gag* Yale.

With the new taxes, how does the author of this graphic afford all the square footage within his/her bubble?

I don't get it either, regarding the mother making a quarter of a million a year.

My taxes went up $1000 this year, and I make less than 1/5th of what she makes. :P

Not complaining, I know there is more to life than buying cars I will never drive, just saying.

With an increase of $3600 a year, she'll be lucky if she can even get into Vassar.

Even if you take $100,000 off of each one, it would still be way too high.

Like most married couples with four children, they make $180,000 in investment income. WTF?

Oh dear God, they may have to send their kid to public school!

All those sad, sad, rich people. They're going to have to cut back the caviar to every other day, instead of every day.

Single Mother with two kids: Most of that $260,000 comes from the ex husband because his sh*tty divorce attorney failed him.

Single woman: As we all know, all single women are whores therefore this woman must be a high priced call girl, and possibly the reason why the single mother is making $260,000.

Retired Couple: I don't know, reparations?

Married Couple with four children. First of all, four kids! What are they, Irish?! Second, if you're making $650,000 a year just shove an iPad in their little hands. Kids grow up pretty fast now anyway.

2013-01-16 09:51:12 AM
They might have to cut back to only 4 or 5 vacations a year!

2013-01-16 09:53:03 AM
The married mom with four children looks very similar to the single mom with two children.

I fear that her husband and two of her children died in a horrific car accident and she has to get by on his life insurance money and investment income.  That poor, poor woman..

It'd be amazing if any married couples with 4 kids have $180k set aside for retirement, let alone have other investments.

/I made $50 from a 1 time dividend last year...

WSJ writers don't shop at Walmart and have never seen employees who work 30 hours a week for $10 an hour and no benefits (which makes them still eligible for food stamps and state funded child health insurance programs)

In the NYC area $200,000 can disappear pretty damn fast, especially if you have kids. Call it rich and whiny, but realize there someone in Uganda making $300 a year who think you're rich an whiny too.

I knew a married couple in Pelham with a son living on less than $100k per year.  It wasn't glamorous, but this idea that you need a quarter-million a year to rent a studio in the tri-state area is ridiculous.

Most advisers suggest no more than 4% withdrawal a year from retirement accounts. So with $180,000 in income, this couple theoretically has $4.5 million in retirement accounts.

Note, the average American takes in $29,000 in retirement income.

There is less distance between the average American's income and your guy in Uganda's than there is between them and any of the people in that picture.

Because the difference in living costs between New York and Bumfark USA are proportionally similar to the difference in living costs between Bumfark and Uganda. Good show.

Here's the thing. We aren't complaining that the person in Uganda is a burden on society who wants to take all our hard-earned money.

This average factors in both folks who make one or two orders of magnitude more than the average and folks who make one or two orders of magnitude less.

That's what I don't understand, their investment income is only 50K, so they are retired but have over 100K in other income that just magically appears?

Never mind families with young kids having over 100k per year in investment income - that means at least a few million in the bank/stocks aside from 401Ks/IRAs and whatnot?

When your calculations would be closer to correct if you dropped them down by an order of magnitude, it's time to start over. Or just give up.

NYC needs ditch diggers and MacDonalds servers after all, and I am pretty sure they aren't paying anywhere near $200k to their staff because of the CoL.

I guess they are getting $100k a year from the government for being black. Why do you think honest white people's taxes are so high nowadays?

Laura Sanders (author of aforementioned WSJ drivel):
I had the most absurd nightmare. I was only bringing home $500,000 instead of $550,000 a year, and no one liked me. I still had my job, I still had my house, Penelope hated me and it was all because of this terrible, awful Negro.

2013-01-16 10:22:14 AM
I read this when they the Journal printed it. And I am angry that I am so late the party because everything that has been said ("How are they retired, earning 180k and look like they are eating catfood day-to-day?") and posted ("Dude, that mother and her kids, with a quarter million in income look unreasonably like the famous dust-bowl-mother photo").

I think my biggest point of anger is the percentages overall:

If you are single
If you earn $230,000 a year (let's give the number the respect it deserves...)
And your taxes increased by an addional $2,907 per year....

Do you really notice that a staggering 1.2% of your paycheck is missing? Given how it is all in the form of taxes I have a hard time accepting that.

If that's what rich people complaints are like, then I can't wait to have rich people problems.
