Wait a minute, so you mean the ozone hole might be caused by the earth's magnetic field and not cfc's?

2003-12-12 11:18:31 AM
This was the plotline to a movie, The Core

Advertised in the theaters, never actually shown there, it was that bad.

THe earths magnetitic field was dropping, so they had to send a craft to the middle of the earth to launch a nuclear weapon there to restart the magma movement once again.

no wonder it went straight to video here.

So I guess now we'll have to flip all of our maps over too.

It's gonna be hard getting used to all the new shapes of the continents.

anyone have a large supply of unobtainium handy?

Neaderthal - I am quite sure they are joking. Trollbait and someone bit

2003-12-12 11:19:39 AM
Let me be the hundredth person to tell people how dumb they are by confusing gravity with magnetism.

2003-12-12 11:19:51 AM
Holy Crap! Someone call Dumbya and get him to speed up his war on the environment. Can't have nature winning in the destruction of mankind

2003-12-12 11:20:14 AM
Gosh, I guess this means the planet'll flip over & we'll all spatter to our deaths at 17.5k mph. I hope you all see the irony in my combination of English and Metric! I'm a farkin' artist!

mw451 - Gore's going to blame conservative AM talk radio broadcasts, of course.

Somebody order the Seaview to launch a couple of nukes into the Van Allen belts.

It happens. This world is moving on and the beams are weakening.

Kent Brockman: Doctor do you think it's time we all panicked, cracked eachother's heads open and feasted on the goo inside?
Doctor: Why yes I do Kent.

Quick - call Halliburton!

One magnetic pole fixer coming up:

Let's all yell, makes for good conversation.

...will my tiny fruit no longer adhere to my refrigeratron? Egads!

2003-12-12 11:28:30 AM
I wondered why my refrigerator magnets keep sliding to the floor...guess this explains it.

The magnetic field won't vanish entirely. The dipole component, currently the majority of the field, will be nearly gone but the higher order components will remain. We'll have a north pole, a south pole, an east pole, a west pole, and maybe more as little pieces of magnetism remain.

Oh Dear!

The compass I use on my daily hunt for the local Safeway will soon be rendered useless!

...flipping the planet's poles for the first time in nearly a million years, scientists said Thursday.
...
"The chances are it will not," Bloxham said. "Reversals are a rare event."

Yeah, these things only happen once in a million years... Oh, wait.

The Earth's magnetic field would disappear in 1500 - 2000 years IF the same rate of decline continued, but since the magnetic field has been fluctuating like this forever and never dropped to nothing it's complete bollocks and gratuitous scaremongering to suggest that it might.

The end of the world is not particularly nigh, but tinfoil hats and underpants might be a good idea just in case.

2003-12-12 11:30:23 AM
Guys...The earth's magnetic field flips happens usually every 200k years, and it hasn't happened in 700k years...

I.E. we're overdue, and historically the magnetic field has dropped quickly like this (10% or so in 300 years) right before that happens.

2003-12-12 11:31:07 AM
Is this going to affect my digital compass on my SUV?

Also, you think we could pass a law preventing the Earth from doing this anymore? Perhaps a fine? Will there be protests?

Hey lets all talk like this, it will be like reading Ain't it Cool News! It isn't annoying at all!

This does explain why my Electromagnetimiton Point Accelerator is reading three clicks to the south.

2003-12-12 11:35:55 AM
something more wrong with our planet?! no it cant be?! i mean come on we take such good care of this place! how could it happen?! but my guess is we will be wiped out by asteroids, meteors, space balls and other junk long before the poles shift. go out dinosaur style.

Or... It would seem to me that if a magnetic field such as the Earth's were deteriorating, the amount of deterioration would increase as it got closer to the end of it. Therefore, it's just the opposite of scaremongering- It's kinda like candy-coating the reality that all electronics would cease to function, even if only temporarily until we figured out what to do.

Or... Nothing at all could happen, and we could just rest in the fact that we don't really know what's going to happen, and anything that is going to happen is out of our hands...

And then burn every Stephen King book ever written.

bitter about the craptacular ending to Wolves of the Calla

So are we all gonna die before the sun blows up? The sun was given 15 mil years. 1200 or so doesnt seem that long. But then again thats alot of generations. I wonder if there is gonna be a big y2k freakout right before its scheduled to happen.

2003-12-12 11:36:43 AM
I , for one, welcome our new magnetic overlords.

2003-12-12 11:36:50 AM
I envy my foot. It's asleep.

2003-12-12 11:37:14 AM
Heh, maybe it has something to do with the fact that the Earth will shift magnetic poles by the year 2012?

Still, the Kyoto agreement should be followed. Wink wink US...

2003-12-12 11:37:15 AM
Count me in.

2003-12-12 11:37:18 AM
Well this is easy enough to fix. Let's just make some more magnets.

2003-12-12 11:37:32 AM
Somebody order the Seaview to launch a couple of nukes into the Van Allen belts.

Even with my scientific know-how, for some reason at first I thought this said Van Halen belts.

And The Core was actually a fairly fun movie. Just don't take any of it's alleged science seriously.

2003-12-12 11:38:26 AM
north and south are defined by magnetism, but east and west are defined by the direction of the sun rising and setting.
so even if magnetic north reverses, east and west still hold constant, and we have to work out a new mnemonic.

so long: Never Eat Soggy Wheaties
hello: Sorry Earth Never Worked

You people should watch Nova. This was soooo last month.

Oh, and I don't care what is going to happen in 100 years, let alone 1000.

time to hack the planet

2003-12-12 11:40:52 AM
How long before the EU and the UN blames this on "GLOBAL WARMING"????

Sheesh, big deal, it happens deal with it. Hell, the sun's magnetic poles switch about every 11 years.

2003-12-12 11:40:52 AM
You idiots, you mother-teat fetish dickwad drinkers!

I cann't believe the utter idiocy of the people on fark. No you chunky buckets of goat vomit, the CORE WAS NOT SCIENTIFICALLY ACCURATE. 'RAYS' are not deflected by the earths' magnetic field. Oh my GOD you idiots, I hope you burn in the fires of nuclear war!

2003-12-12 11:41:14 AM

take your tin foil hats and run!

GTHOM
Well this is easy enough to fix. Let's just make some more magnets.

I'll donate the sixty or so fridge magnets I have from Ho-Lee-Chow!

And sadly, a GIS for "van halen belts" came up blank.

Among the satellites that have fallen prey to the harmful effects was a Danish satellite designed, ironically, to measure the Earth's magnetic field, Bloxham said.

Mmmmmmneeer!!!!! divvy!

You took the words right out of my mouth.
Look on the bright side, fewer people live in San Francisco now, so if the mag field stops, then let the powers that be melt the Golden Gate Bridge.

When the pole shift is it a John Madden-esque "Boom!" kinda thing or is it slow?

You know, the North Pole is in Battle Creek Michigan and ten years later people in Columbus, Ohio are throwing "Here comes the pole!" parties? If so, I think that the North Pole could have a bigger shiftless, loser, unemployed, trust fund milking following that the Dead and Phish combined!

2003-12-12 11:46:53 AM
Did any liberals blame Bush yet??

2003-12-12 11:48:28 AM
North will become south?
Up will become down?
Black will become white?
Existance will become nothingness?

Damn that Affleck.
