If you spend more than 4 hours at that temple, should you consult a physician?

FTA: "National History Museum chief Bozhidar Dimitrov, who hails from Sozopol, said that archaeologists had found a clay phallus inscribed "to Priapus" during a dig in the Black Sea town, which in the past 24 months has boasted everything from the finding of the purported hand bones of Christian saint John the Baptist to a temple to Poseidon."

All in one dig site? Sounds legit.

"Priapus, interestingly, also had a less obviously sexually prominent place in the figurines used as pointers in artefacts used in ancient Greece and Rome as navigational aids."

The figurines used as pointers were less obviously sexual?

If they mean a herm, then I'd say they are indeed a lot less obviously sexual. I mean, the penis on that pillar isn't that big.

Y'know, we have a img1.fark.net tag, but using it is a guaranteed automatic greenlight denial, no matter how funny or appropriate the link is. Amirite??

TFA fail. So now a single clay henry equals a temple? WTF Bulgaria? Who trains your archaeologists? Or headline writers? Some ancient farker dropped it in a field somewhere, so now it's a temple? Project much?

/something something some kind of envy

If it's a large dig site, that's not unreasonable at all. Even small cities would have dozens of small shrines/temples, and Christian relics were as common as dirt once people figured out you could dig up a dead body, walk to the next town, and claim you had the femurs of John the Baptist and the tailbone of St. Mark.

That's a really interesting angle on a historical problem which Euro archaeologists must face from time to time. If your dig site contains the purported relic of some saint, than the methodology which one would use to determine its nature would only support it as a nigh contemporaneous isolate, but losing the social dimension which would possibly make the site make sense. I wonder if there is a paper I can read on it...for free...

They found "a penis". One? Phswah! In India they have entire temples bedecked with farkin - and they not only revere stone dildos, but provide a nice fleshlight-esque base for the things.

Bulgaria: We have a farkstick
India; We have all the farksticks!

I remember feeling a pang of embarrassment when my Indian fiancee questioned at an art gallery why the women weren't more buxom. I mumbled something about western/Greek ideals of proportion, anything over a handful is wasted, and was glad to go back home and fondle her luscious breasts.

Also, obligatory "how do get to dig up a temple of Priapus? Study hard."

On the sidebar, there's an obscure Star Trek reference, which sort of sticks out in a Bulgarian English-language online newspaper.

I guess it's not the fact that it was all on one dig site. Old churches were frequently built on the top of even older pagan temples after all. What gets me is that he uncovered a medieval relic and then, within 2 years, evidence of a Poseidon temple, and then a Priapus temple. And the reason he thinks it's a Priapus temple is because of one clay dick.

That's thousands of years of history layered on top of each other. It just seems like he's uncovering things too fast. And it also makes me think he's declaring major finds without citing a great deal of context. He finds some fingers in a church. It must be the relics of a saint! He finds a clay dick. It must be a temple of Priapus! He finds a clay dolphin or something. It must be a temple of Poseidon too!

Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions based on a simple newspaper article, but it gives me the slimy feeling that due diligence is being overlooked in favor of self-aggrandizement.
