TSA is a horrid government waste that only gives passengers the appearance of safety.

I still think Rapiscan is a great name for a backscatter machine.

2013-01-15 01:59:43 PM
Maybe we can sell off the $30 million dollars worth of TSA 'puffer machines' that are rotting away in airport basements across the country to make up some of that $420 million? You know, the ones that were bought and paid for before confirming they were completely useless.

Haha Libs.. See what you get for creating this monstrosity and the DHS. Hope you're happy with your government, government everywhere nonsense. We need to elect small government Republicans who would never create these kinds of things. Go back to your libraries and book learnun and leave governing to private business, which is why you told us to use color coded system and duct tape

You're giving them way too much credit.

The TSA could be almost entirely replaced by a team of well trained beagles. We'd be a hell of a lot safer, and airports would get 656% cuter.

TSA wasted $30 million in "puffers" in 2006, I see they have upped the ante.

And it looks like the TSA is starting to realize the knee-jerk reaction they made in buying the Rapiscan (blue, radiation-emitting Nude-O-Scope) in reaction to Underwear Bomber (also the company former DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff lines his pockets with). Those blue boxes are starting to be removed from high-throughtput airports. That, plus seeing how often they are roped off (usually meaning broken down), makes me believe the durability of those machines is right up there with an egg shell.

If he were alive, I'd like to see Mike Wallace do a piece of the cost and the effectiveness of the TSA, if only to expose them for who they really are, a government waste program that bloats only to keep itself relevant and the traveling public scared.

Noisy or not, you could have everyone pass by four dogs, for although each could do the whole thing themselves it is good to have some redundancy. One dog for drugs, one for bombs, one for gunpowder/gun oil, and one for odious amounts of cologne/perfume/AXE.

Wait... make it five. It would be nice to have a mild-tempered, non-working-dog to pat while you're waiting for your bag to get rifled through.

That would be nice.

I got a free grope from the bundespolizei three years ago in Frankfurt. He didn't even say bitte. So it's not only the mall cop rejects who are fascinated with the traveling public's genitals.

TSA has yet to check out my junk other than one trip through the peep show machine in JFK last summer. I'm hoping I can use precheck for most flights now and avoid most of it.

I have one of these cards, because I'm trying to become a merchant mariner. (some day.)
All of the merchant mariners I've talked to say they never use the damn thing. It's just something you have to keep in your passport in case anyone asks you for it. There's a different card they use on a regular basis, one that was already in use, and is required to get a twic card. What a wast of money.

Well of course the DoD doesn't need the TWIC, it's got the CAC and FRAC programs that it likes perfectly well. Also the TWIC wasn't designed for use by the DoD in the first place. It's a programm that was designed (poorly, and it has failed everywhere that has attempted or is attempted to implement it) for use at "soft" security targets such as seaports and container terminals. I work for a security company and we are under contract to install TWIC readers at the port here for use by all personnel entering and exiting ALL entrances and exits to the port. Needless to say there are constant administrative delays. Why? Well aside from the system being poorly designed and sucky in general, even if the program worked at 100% efficency, and even if EVERYONE could remember their PIN that they registered several years ago when everyone was forced to buy a $132.75 TWIC card to get on the ports, and even if NO ONE was ever falsely rejected by the system's fingerprint reader, you're still adding 15 seconds on to every truck entering the ports. That's 8000 trucks a day. That's slowing down the ports, that's losing millions of dollars in productivity. TWIC = THIS WILL INCUR COSTS.

Sorry, but the TWIC is one of the worst and dumbest programs ever implemented by the Federal Government.

Of course the TSA works, and by "works" I mean they thoroughly humiliate everyone who dares to fly and they liberate valuables from passengers' luggage.

The obvious solution is to take the manpower going to waste in the airports and apply it where it matters. Like at flea markets that are selling pirated dvds.

2013-01-15 04:01:50 PM
FTA: "The DoD PKI [Public Key Infrastructure] office has determined that the Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC) PKI certificate cannot be used to authenticate users for access to DoD systems. The DoD PKI office has not established a trust relationship with Homeland Security/TSA.

So, it's not that it doesn't work because of some inherent problem.
It's that it doesn't work with the DoD system, because the DoD has not allowed it to work with them...
