The official stats on Grambling's website show that the team's leading scorer is Terry Rose, a 6-foot-4 freshman guard/forward from Davenport, Fla. Rose averages 17.3 points per game and is shooting a solid 43.4 percent from the field, including 45.5 percent from 3-point range. The second-leading scorer, putting up 9.7 points per game, is also Rose. Yes, it's the same player, listed twice. Only the second time, his name is misspelled. That's the kind of year it's been for Grambling. The team's No. 2 scorer is a typo.

For a full athletic scholarship I might be able to swallow my pride and get beaten each week in basketball. I'd just be sure down at the bar to never mention which D1A team I play for.

You know it's bad when you can get a minority scholarship to Grambling for being white....

If by "once in a while" you mean "not since 1971, and accompanied by great butthurt from the Globetrotters", the answer is yes.

Wikipedia link. I swear I had a link to a SI article about the game, but I can't find it now.

Why don't the Washington Generals step their recruiting up? You must be able to lure some fringe "And-1" types into showcasing their abilities against the best of the rest.

Not sure if serious, but...."white" schools have more funding, wealthier alumni, larger fanbases, and (usually) more academic prestige. If you're poor and black, you'd rather go to a school like Duke, UNC, or Georgetown, than Prairie View A&M, NC A&T, or Howard.

Which reminds me of a tangentially related ancedote - John Thompson, when asked why he didn't actively recruit white players at Georgetown, once said something like "I coach at a school that is 95% white and located in a city that is 95% black."
